The bed was very comfortable and we really appreciated the high ceilings, beautiful grounds, and enjoyed our walks around the estate. If you're working like we were, note that the internet is indeed fast enough for a developer who runs team meetings to lead all their meetings! I had a spa session with massage and facial and it was excellent! I swam every day and used the sauna facilities. The locker room and pool area was kept very clean and dry. The lady attendant was fastidious in keeping the changing room dry and clean. There was a bit of an incident where one of my favorite vintage pieces I sent off to laundry was not returned to us when they dropped off our clean clothes. I had actually been at the entrance to the hotel when the cleaner dropped it off and I verbally acknowledged to her that I could see my laundry because of my vintage piece and she stated they'd be delivered to my room shortly. Front staff sent back an empty hanger amongst our other clean clothes and had lost it. We found it on the floor amongst boxes behind the reception desk. They returned my item, and apologized personally. Not a big deal and glad it was resolved.

The downside of this hotel is the aggressive pricing for wedding packages, meaning that there are many wedding parties going on. I counted six in two days, which brings a lot of drunkards to the hotel, which does not help if you're seeking a quite place to relax. Will I ever get back to this hotel, no.

Afternoon Tea was served in a pair of beautiful Victorian reception rooms, but the musical accompaniment was odd... Walkin' On Sunshine by Katrina and the Waves, and a few other pop hits. Also a chamberpot was placed by the fireplace... so I'd assume the staff weren't familiar with what a chamberpot actually is! So overall not bad, but not great. However, the hotel part of our stay was wonderful! Yes it's a bit of a pricy stay, but as a one off, it really was a lovely luxurious treat! We stayed in the Serenity Spa room, which had a lovely comfortable king sized bed, ensuite, conservatory, and an outdoor sauna and hot tub in a secluded yard just for our room. The hot tub was lovely, we really enjoyed that, but we couldn't get the sauna to work. Also the shower in the ensuite was one of those all singing all dancing numbers with jets and sprays and waterfalls and allsorts. Very nice! The en-suite was modern and spacious, which was very nice, and in contrast to the main room itself which was Victorian elegance with chandeliers and high ceilings. The furnishings were warm rich colours, and although we thought the bed looked like it had a bit of a dip in it at first, it turned out to be veeeeery comfortable! It's a shame there was no plug near the bed, but there were others throughout the room and conservatory. The addition of a free-to-use mini fridge, bathrobes and slippers were nice too. Breakfast was delicious and plentiful, both the continental and the full Yorkshire that we opted for. The grounds of the hotel are truly stunning, real Victorian English country gardens with winding paths and quiet seating areas, with some of the most beautiful views you'll ever see. Parking was free and roomy (we saw 7 cars parked there at one point with no major squashing). It's also within just a few minutes walk of the main village and street. If I had the money, I'd happily stay here again.

The good news is that the beer is still top quality, albeit pricey (£3.50 a pint), and the roaring open fire was very welcome on a grungy day like today. Sadly though, the interior designers have been hard at work, and turned this place into a somewhat sterile experience with the emphasis more on food (expensive) and coffee than beer. I guess a lot of people will love this restaurpub, but to me it's mock tudor, and not the real thing. It's the sort of pub that foreign tourists go in because the real pubs look a bit too intimidating. The stone flags remain, but the soul has gone. Having said all that, and call me a hypocrite if you want, I'd probably go here again at some point as the beer was good.....but not before I'd been to a few other pubs in the area first.

I'd suggest getting the wine pairing as it really completes the meal. Go ahead and stay the night as breakfast is included the next day. Make sure to make a small detour to Kilburn to see The Kilburn White Horse which stands firmly in the hillside. The Black Swan is a beautiful picturesque old pub full of warmth and charm. Upon arrival you are welcomed into the bar area for aperitifs where a log fire crackles and glows. Make sure to notice the Robert Thompson mouse carved into the bar. Great selection of small batch gins - I enjoyed a glass of Sir Robin of Locksley from Sheffield with tonic. Amuse bouche are served here before moving upstairs to the restaurant. The Smoked Eel and Apple Tartlets were light and well balanced in their flavours whilst the Chicken Dumpling was rich, satisfying and would sit well on the finest of dim sum plates in Hong Kong. The restaurant is more modern in decoration with an "open kitchen" where some of the dishes are prepared with a clear artistic love and attention to detail. Service is friendly, knowledgeable and attentive without being intrusive. Good selection of wines for most palates and wallets. I had the 10 course tasting menu which, at £85, felt like a bargain compared to the price of Michelin starred food in major cities. To start, a Mussel with Oyster Leaf canapé - so perfectly decorated that it felt wrong to eat it, but so tasty. Next up Langoustine with Caramelised Whey, served like a lollipop with a twig to hold it with - lovely textures and cooked to perfection. Venison Tartare followed - a small dish but rich in flavour and beautifully prepared and decorated. Sour Bread and Sour Butter was distinctive and a good filler in preparation for the main courses. The Monkfish with Asparagus and Onion, although delicious, was probably the weakest dish. The sauce tasted like heavy sweet soy sauce and was a bit overpowering in its saltiness for the delicate flavour of the fish. Still very enjoyable though. The Slowly Cooked Crapaudine Beetroot was the star of the menu. Cooked in beef fat (I believe), the beetroot takes on a heavier composition and is chewy and almost glutinous with all of the accompanying decorations providing broad and bold flavours. Absolutely fantastic! Scallop Cured with Rhubarb was another standout with the smoothness of the slightly charred scallops countering the tartness of the rhubarb, all tied together with a rich and balanced sauce. Herb-Fed Chicken with Wild Garlic from this Year and Last was another amazing creation with a blanket over the chicken in the form of a garlic leaf. The chicken was more warm than hot but extremely tasty. The first dessert was ice cream (or iced yoghurt?) Lollipops which were wonderfully innovative with their unique flavours. The Sheep's Milk with Douglas Fir Oil was also an memorable dessert with natural tastes of the season. The final dessert, served with coffee was Cake made from Artichoke, Chicory Root and Thyme. The combination worked well although the chicory root (?) was slightly bitter. A great end to a fantastic meal and experience. For most who visit The Black Swan at Oldstead, a significant journey will be involved but don't let that put you off...It's well worth the effort and will be one of those great food experiences.
