The place apparently underwent a huge refurbishment a while back, and is now a rather classy gastropub-cum-restaurant boasting a mostly European restaurant. There are sharing platters available including a fine antipasti selection, while the main courses range from pastas to salads to steaks to spit-roast chicken dishes. I had the chorizo, jalapeno and salami pizza, and it went down an absolute treat. Aside from the food, the White Hart has a bar area where you can relax after your meal with the weary countryside travellers and a wide selection of drinks. The atmosphere and decor were both perfect too, which led me to the conclusion that this place is definitely worth the journey.

Top local performer Gary Stewart hosts a new night 'The Gaslight Club', featuring a menagerie of acts from the Leeds music scene performing in a very cost and intimate setting. I, for one, will be there. The general theme goes a bit like this; live music on a Monday and Tuesday, with DJs a the weekend. Par for the course, really. There's also regular 'Quidrophenia' events, raising money for charity. It's an all day festival with entry costing a quid. Drinks are a bit more though, sorry to shatter any illusions. Oporto's a good place to go hang out with your mates. Any day, any time. They serve a selection of grub and have a music policy worth listening to.

The gammon was thick and well cooked, the chips were huge and home cooked and was served with a soft fried egg and a spiced pineapple chutney. The plate was cleared and every mouthful was enjoyable. My wife'a steak and ale pie was piping hot and full of meat. The mashed potatoe was creamy and the veg was well cooked. All in all a very nice dining experience. Better than a motorway cafe!

Sadly, it combines all three and, while the food is good and cheap and the crèche (Wacky Warehouse) is apparently popular, it fails epically in terms of being a pub. It is the drinks prices that confuse me the most - a large family-orientated pub in the suburbs - yet the drinks cost more than most pubs in Headingley and the city centre. A lager will cost you upwards of £2.50 which is scandalous considering the location and lack of chat in this place. More bemusing that this, however, is the fact that a pint of coke costs almost the same - any pub in which it costs the same to get drunk as it does to get high on e-numbers and caffeine just has to be questioned. There is no pub-style atmosphere in the Lawnswood Arms either, as there are usually (at least until the early evening) families with children eating, which makes the place sound more like a McDonalds than a pub. The reason that there are often families eating in here is due to the fact that the food is of a higher quality than most other pubs you will eat in (particularly the gammon steak!) and it is inexpensive in you are in a group with an even number (£10 for two main meals). Essentially, the Lawnswood Arms is a better place to eat than to drink, which seems strange for a pub. But perhaps that the way they want it.
