Flew in on a Sunday and arrived at my hotel around noon. Immediately went to the concierge to see if he could secure me a spot since I had zero luck trying to get a reservation on line for two weeks prior. Remarkable, he scored and I literally walked around the corner and saw the long line to get into the pub first. I was seated immediately, however, and proceeded to enjoy a traditional Sunday Roast. Room was very pleasant (there are so many I got lost returning to my table from a bio brake. Roast was very good ( but no Lawry's) and the sides excellent. Could not decide if my favorite was the roast potatoes (crispy outside soft inside) or the glazed carrots. Yorkshire pudding was good but again, I am to used to the Lawry's and this is a different style. Peas were, well, peas, but very fresh. The sticky toffee cake was excellent and the Guinness fresh, creamy and a proper pour. Good thing because the selection of winners by the glass and half bottles of wine were both a little thin. Overall wine list was good but I was alone and not up for drinking a full bottle by myself. Overall, very enjoyable and to judge by the crowd and difficulty in getting a reservation, one of the more popular in town. read more

Truth be told, I wasn't expecting a late-night dinner at a pub in Central London to be this amazing... or expensive. Thankfully, I have friends from out of town who are more in-the-know about my city than I am. Reservations were made more than a month in advance, and if that's any indication of how popular this place is, plan well in advance. From the ground floor, you wouldn't think this pub is any different than the thousands of others around London, with its crowd of office workers gathering around the outside like a swarm of thirsty bees once 5PM rolls around. Once inside, however, it turns into a rustic, yet sophisticated dining experience; especially when you're guided to the top two floors. My group and I were seated at a table with a lovely view from the topmost floor, gazing out over Piccadilly Circus. The menu seems to vary from evening to evening, so prepare for those elevated prices. I can safely say, however, that every single thing you'll have at this restaurant will leave you salivating for more. My rib-eye steak was easily the best I've had in London - possibly my life - succulent and perfectly cooked, with that delicious char on the ends for maximum satisfaction. The sides are ridiculously delicious for what they are, and even the mashed potatoes left nothing to be desired. The desserts - of which we tried all - are all a comforting finish to a glorious meal without being overwhelming. The bread pudding was probably my favourite of the bunch, but that sorbet can't be ignored, either. They have a few cocktails on the menu, but given that I was having steak, I listened to reason for once and went with a glass of their Château Bel-Air 2010 red wine. Now, I'm not usually a wine drinker, and absolutely never go for reds, but this bit of liquid sin may have just changed my view on life forever. I'd certainty have it again, if prompted. This lovely gem of a pub should definitely be on your list for the next special occasion in your life. Started with an interesting but flavorful shrimp, tiny shrimp, and one langoustine topped cocktail. Flavor was good but too much thousand island dressing smothering the taste of the shrimp. My partner had the "Pile of Langoustines" and I had the prefix 3 course with skirt steak and chips with bernaise sauce with the sticky toffee pudding for dessert. Excellent cook on the steak and the chips fried in duck fat were excellent. Service was stellar and quick and always checking to see what was needed. Ambiance was a bit loud as it is a wide open dining area on the third floor. Pricing I think was appropriate for the quantity. read more

Enjoyed a very good meal at the Devonshire Arms. Made reservations, as the dining space is small and popular. The dining room in which we were seated also has an open fire on which they're grilling; this is great to see, but it does make for a warm room if the weather is already hot (we were very glad we weren't seated by the fire). Service was efficient. Food was very flavorful: highlights were the ribs and the bread and butter pudding for dessert. Pricey, but everything was well made. Worth the visit! read more

Walked in 15 min before Sunday roast for 2 & was able to get a table without reservation. Service was fantastic! All the food was amazing except the roast itself. Its our last night in London and wanted a nice meal to close out or trip. ot been able to get a reservation, and knowing that they may possibly take walkups for the roof terrace, we took a chance at 5pm. Keeping expectations low, we walked in and lucked out. A table for two on the roof. I went for the set menu, strip steak with bernaise sauce and duck fat chips and the toffee pudding. My partner went with the pea soup, beef check and suet pudding, and mash potato. Everything was delicious. It didn't look like much but nothing was left on my plate. Having eaten chips almost every day of the trip, these were absolutely the best chips I had on the trip. While I didn't have any vinegar to go with it, that bernaise sauce was so damn good none of it was left at the end of my meal. The highlight of my partners meal was the soup. He said it tasted like eating fresh garden of peas. This is nothing like the pea soup I've had back in the states. I'm used to having lumpy pea soup, I'm starting to think I've only ever had bad pea soup. Expect a smooth silky bowl of soup with bits of ham in it. It's light and refreshing. 5/5 stars. Toffee pudding. There's a reason it's on the set menu and there's no way to be mad at it. Get it. The perfect end to our trip. A great meal, good weather, sitting outdoors, on a (fairly) quiet outdoor terrace. read more

Listen, The Devonshire isn't just Gastropub of the moment. It's officially gastro pub of the year and anyone who is anyone has been and raved. More buzz than a Rampant Rabbit. I'm not anyone who is anyone so patience was required but finally our Sunday Lunch soiree was upon us. Off we trot. When RunDMC declared themselves tougher than leather back in 1984 I wondered if that's as tough as tough could ever get. 40 years later and the kings of rap have been mashed. Not by Kendrick or Central Cee, but by a simple spud. The Devonshire had been a seedy Soho stalwart for 230 years until it painfully morphed into a Jamie's Kitchen. Mercifully two smart restauranteurs, Charlie Carrol and Oisin Rogers bucked the trend of disappearing pubs with a wonderful vision. Carrol points out that while restaurants are a place to be seen, pubs are a place to disappear. And voila. A place you can do both. Slap bang in the heart of Piccadilly Circus and stretching over three floors with a recently opened roof, it feels exciting. The downstairs is dark with plenty of nooks and crannies to hide in. Tourists stumble down missed steps as they gaze around looking for their next insta shot. It's all a bit of a bunfight and we're relieved to get to the front of the queue to the restaurant where we are escorted upstairs to a wonderfully bright, airy, smart and simple dining room. Exposed brick, wood panels and wooden stools, it's no frills and elegant all at once. Eager diners clamour for the waiters' attention. They are as obliging as they can be but waiting and not getting what you asked for is the price you pay for being at the hottest ticket in town. Starters, once despatched, are superb. Confit tomato tart is an abundance of said ingredients along with goat's cheese and billows of fresh radicchio on a flaky base. Iberico Pork ribs are simply some of the nicest things I have put in my mouth. The less said about that the better, for fear of doing them a disservice. Potted shrimp on Melba toast was pretty as a picture topped with pickled red onion and cornichons and cut into perfect rectangles which were wide enough to fit into the mouth but much too long to attempt to eat like a Scooby Snack. I can confirm this through experience. The main event didn't live up to these heights. Those tougher than leather roasties. Like a bikini clad pensioner who's camped out on the Carlton Beach in Cannes for 80 years, a skin that was once golden and glowing was now galvanised and fortified into a formidable foe for the jawbone. Mere incisors are not up to the job of puncturing these potatoes and I understand now why they gave us steak knives. Conversely the beef could be cut with the desert spoon. Meltingly tender and delicious. But when it comes to Sunday lunch, the roasties are the bar by which everything else can be measured. To find a way to get them 80% right 100% of the time may be a boring logistics concern but it's one that needs solving to fully satisfy the Sunday audience. They were already forgiven because of those Iberico pork ribs and the general vibe. Service-wise, they are stretched. Puddings never came, water needed to be begged for. We weren't bothered. We made a sterling contribution to the general hubbub, chatted happily with our ever so close neighbours and departed delighted but also dreaming of the roasties you get at home or at Hammersmith's Anglesea Arms, a pub that once had a similar buzz but has long since settled into quiet Sunday brilliance. Gastropub of the year may be a little generous judging by our Sunday excursion but full marks for the spirit and the ambience and I hope, once things have settled, roasties that satisfy. read more

I arrived around 12 where i was seated 3rd floor and probably the only person up there, by 12:30/1 - fully packed! if you're looking to score a resy try to get there a bit earlier but wow this roast was amazing but I have to say the sides were the STARS!!! How the hell can this place only have a 3.9?? What a bunch of picky people. Man this place gets a 5 from me. First time visit for me and it was a precious Sunday Roast. I guess Saturdays are more precious as we tried to get in there when the reservations opened up but all the other Web AHoles trying to get in on a Saturday bumped me off. Oh well, at least I got in on a Sunday, and it was amazing. The servers were great. I started off my wait with a nice Creamy Guinness and sipped it out front with all the other folks. Sorry guys, I only had one, some guy I was talking to was on his 3rd and showed no signs of stopping. You brits sure like your beer....and hey, I'm half Brit, so no pooping on me. Anyway I was seated at a nice table next to a couple guys who I think were German. I asked them if they had been there before and they said yeah once before. I asked them what starter to get and they looked at me funny and said we don't get any starters. Good thing I listened to them because the Sunday Roast was HUGE. Two slabs of sliced roasted pink Prime Rib (reminded me of House of Prime Rib in San Francisco), roasted potatoes, yorkie, creamed leaks (AMAZING!!) and some Peas I think, honestly the creamed leaks made me forget the rest of the veggies. It all was just amazing. I had heard quite a bit about this place and am really glad I was able to get in and experience a fantastic Sunday Roast. My husband does a lot of work in the UK and this was on his bucket list, so when I was there last week we went twice. We popped in on a Sunday for pints and were able to get a reservation for the day after (Monday) for lunch. It was perfection from start to finish. We sat upstairs in front of the grill and were able to watch the chefs stoking the fire and grilling the meats (I'd recommend wearing layers as it can get warm up there) We both chose a 3 course pre fixe menu special - prawns and shrimp (fresh and tasty), steak frites (the sirloin was simply seasoned and cooked to perfection and the frites crispy...and I would put their bernaise sauce on everything!) and figgy pudding (my first time having it and it was sublime). The wine list offers many great options for glass and bottle - we had the Primitivo which paired nicely with the steak. I'm so sad that this isn't my regular corner pub here in the states, but I know for certain that every time we are in London this will be on our list of stops. Do not hesitate to make a reservation or pop in for a pint downstairs in the cozy pub, it's a great meeting spot. read more

As I mentioned in two prior reviews, there seems to be a federation of British chain pubs masquerading as individual establishments. The settings vary from pub to pub, but the menus are indistinguishable. I'm not being an idiot and saying, "They all have fish and chips!" I mean they have identical menus with identical fonts, identical clip art, identical prices, and so on and so on. This one wasn't bad, and we managed to snag a table in the pretty quiet upstairs area. Unfortunately, since London pubs close alarmingly early even on weekends, we didn't stay for long. We had time for one generic round of drinks and then we were out. I suppose there's nothing wrong with that, but there's no real reason to seek this place out. read more

Nice size pub close to Piccadilly tube station. Friendly bar staff with average priced pints, not the cheapest but also not the most expensive in London. I wouldn't go out of my way to spend a night here but if your in the area then its worth dropping in for a pint. Bar food is the standard London bar menu. Try the Big Ben burger. read more

Yes, a really nice pub - but not extraordinary. Just behind Piccadilly Circus it is surprising its not only full of tourists but has a nice mixture of people. The barman was friendly and it was - for an afternoon - not too busy. Just right for a quiet pint of Abbot Ale or - mind you!!! - Old Peculier that very special beer thats not easy to get. Visited this pub before I went to see Spamalot, so probably the busiest time of day. It was packed, but the staff were great, serving people really quickly while managing to keep smiles on their faces. My husband ordered a pint of lager and a 1/2 of cider and the girl got the order the wrong way round, He mentioned it and she poured him another 1/2 of lager and said my challenge for the night was to finish the pint before the show started. Lots of wood and brass. Only downside is the toilets are tiny. read more
