The staff at Dexter Family Practice do a good job at some things. They have generally kind, helpful doctors. Dr. Harms is indeed a very good doctor. It is the struggle to gain an appointment that is disappointing there. Dexter Family Practice seems to have an unwritten policy about when a person gets an emergent visit appointment and it is very challenging to be seen there on an emergent basis. I have even gone so far as to call the night before to ensure that there are morning emergent care spots available before taking the day off work. On three occasions, I called back in the morning and spoke to the intake person who told me they had no spots available that day. I have always called first thing as they opened. This is continually frustrating because it is not easy to take a day off work and when a copay for the Urgent Care is costly, it leaves a person with no options. The only times I could get appointments were long range or by superseding the emergent intake process by emailing a doctor. One has to have a U of M portal and password in order to email the doctor and it is challenging to email someone you have never seen in person. This process of having unwritten rules about who can have an appointment seems unfair and leaves a customer feeling like they have done something wrong. It would be nice of Dexter Family Practice to post publicly, guidelines about what types of ailments get emergency appointments and which do not. It seems like just being honest about that list and maybe even mentioning what illness and emergencies trump others would be best practice. I can understand it when a heart attack patient or burn victim gets into the Emergency Room before I do, even at U of M, where DFP is an affiliate. However, that set of guidelines on how to "triage" incoming emergencies seems fairly transparent. Does my possible strep throat trump her gastrointestinal problems on the third Monday in October? Well that is hard to say. If you have emergent care needs more often than run of the mill annual appointments, I would look for another doctor's office. read more

I would recommend everyone go here. Dr. Wylie is the BEST Dr.! You get in quick, you don't have to wait long when you get there. He listens to me, and most of all, he cares. He really cares. He talks to you like a person, not a number. He takes his time with each one if his patients. read more

Dr. Harmes is my physician. I REALLY like her however her staff is not the best. I finally got fed up with the front desk staff when they were unable to book a simple follow up visit. I asked to speak with a manager ( Anette Coy). I called for three days leaving a voice mail every time before she finally returned my call. She acted like I was inconveniencing her and rudely cut me off multiple times during the phone call. Anette passed my phone call off to a nurse named Julie who was phenomenal. She easily booked my follow up visit. Why this couldn't have been done in the first place is beyond me. The only reason I'm not giving this place 1 star is because I really like Dr. Harmes and Julie helped me out. Customer service would go along way if they were half way nice to a loyal patient. read more

Dr. Rabideau was my physician at this clinic. She was chronically late. I had a bad fall one winter down my stairs, breaking my neck and causing a TBI. I started to have serious vertigo. I went to her about 5 times about this problem. (She told me to "salt my water"!) That didn't work, it actually made me vomit. I went back again, and she told me that my vertigo was simple the physical effects of stress. I talked to a friend of mine in CO...an avid skier. He told me to contact the vestibular clinic at UofM. Rabideau was reluctant to do so, therefore, I contacted the clinic myself. They did a thorough exam, and found I had nystagmus...indicating an inner ear disorder. They showed me some easy PT exercises to do at home. They said that my fall had knocked some crystals (needed for balance) loose in my inner ear, and said it was THE most common cause of Vertigo, and that should have been the first thing Rabideau checked. Within 2 days of doing the PT exercises at home, the vertigo disappeared. I say don't walk away from this clinic. RUN!!! read more

Very happy with Dexter Family Practice. I have never had a very long wait time before appointments. I see Dr Harmes and love her. She is very patient and reassuring. She listens to all of my concerns and I never feel rushed. If I am ill they have always been able to fit me in when needed, not always with Dr Harmes, but Ive always been able to see a doctor the day I called. The office is electronic, so the medical records are digital (theres a lap top in each room) and all prescriptions are sent right to the pharmacy electronically. Dexter Family Practice is part of UM Health care so any tests or major procedures would be preformed at UM Hospital. read more

On an emergent basis, a party can NEVER get into this practice. At the onset of their "new database" a few months ago, this became drastically worse. The folks answering the phone are not nurses and to get a nurse on the phone you have to get past the gatekeeper at the front desk. Nearly impossible. When you work, have something that you save all of your sick days for (for me this is a special needs child who has many doctors appointments), and you try to get into see anyone, you are met with a fake sweet voice that just says, "Oh, I am so sorry, we don't have any appointments available today." This has not happened once to me, it has happened FOUR times since the new "database" system has been put in place. The doctors for my daughter keep saying, "It will make everything better soon. We will have access to patient information, we will have better record keeping..." Well, I have to say, if better record keeping is the goal, not patient well being and nurturing, U of M has got it down. Soon they will have excellent patient records and no patients. It is absurd to me that one system switch can cause so much damage for so long. I would not become a new patient at Dexter Family Practice, I would work hard to find someone who does things the old fashioned way... where patients come first. read more
