I recently returned to visit after being away for over a decade, and I was stunned to see what they called a "modernization" from 2021. This library held such a special place in my heart growing up. Walking through its doors again should've felt like coming home but instead, it felt like a stranger had moved in and redecorated with no sense of what made the place beloved. Sadly, the renovations have taken away much of its character. The ceilings have been lowered, the lighting is harsh and uninviting, and the carpet is distracting and ugly. The once beautiful staircase is now sad and stripped of its former charm--though it still creaks, a small comfort. And perhaps most shocking of all: there are so few books and bookshelves. How can you call it a library when there are so few bookshelves? My heart truly aches for the community, especially for the kids today who won't get to experience the magic this place once held. Even the bathrooms were untouched during the renovation, which makes the whole effort feel hollow and misdirected. It's sad it's not even open on Sundays. It's doing the community a disservice. Whoever approved these changes clearly didn't understand - or worse, didn't care - about what this place meant to the town. They should be ashamed. The only reason for my 3 stars is that the staff was friendly, knowledgeable and knowledge is power - go support your local library. Other than that, Aiken, get your act together. This was the biggest waste of money I've ever seen in my life. I'm glad I don't live here anymore.

Two months later the society was constituted a church under the leadership of the first minister, Wm. T. Brantley, this property was purchased in 1870. A church on this site was dedicated May 26, 1821. In 1845, after serious friction arose in the national Triennial Convention, 327 delegates from eight southern states and the District of Columbia met here to form the Southern Baptist Convention. This building was erected in 1902." This is marker number 121-29 and it was erected in 1956 by the Georgia Historical Commission. A separate granite marker is nearby. It reads, "On this site May 8, 1845. The Southern Baptist Convention was organized by 327 delegates from the states of Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Louisiana, Kentucky and District of Columbia. The following officers were elected: Rev. Wm. B. Johnson of Edgefield S.C. President Talson Lumpton, Ga J.B. Taylor, Va. Vice presidents Jesse Hartwell, Ala. James C. Crane, Va. Secretaries The Rev. W.T. Brantey, Sr. was Pastor of the Church. This tablet was presented at the Centennial of the Convention" it's falling down because decades of deferred maintenance have finally become visible from the street. The building has been unused since 1975, and water intrusion, broken windows, and repeated break‑ins have accelerated the decay. Preservation officials have cited the owner for failing to stabilize the structure, and the damaged but otherwise impressive dome in particular makes the whole complex appear structurally unsound. And it did. I was subject to an initial greeting where my purpose for being there was verified and I took a number and got in line. In the middle of the afternoon, it was less than ten minutes before I was seen. Presenting my stuff, doing a couple of quick tests, and paying a pretty reasonable fee, I was out of there in probably less than half an hour total. Now, some people have more complicated situations, and some people clearly don't check out all the online resources before coming, but at least from my perspective it was a pretty smooth experience and the people working there seemed like they knew what they were doing.
