I recently returned to visit after being away for over a decade, and I was stunned to see what they called a "modernization" from 2021. This library held such a special place in my heart growing up. Walking through its doors again should've felt like coming home but instead, it felt like a stranger had moved in and redecorated with no sense of what made the place beloved. Sadly, the renovations have taken away much of its character. The ceilings have been lowered, the lighting is harsh and uninviting, and the carpet is distracting and ugly. The once beautiful staircase is now sad and stripped of its former charm--though it still creaks, a small comfort. And perhaps most shocking of all: there are so few books and bookshelves. How can you call it a library when there are so few bookshelves? My heart truly aches for the community, especially for the kids today who won't get to experience the magic this place once held. Even the bathrooms were untouched during the renovation, which makes the whole effort feel hollow and misdirected. It's sad it's not even open on Sundays. It's doing the community a disservice. Whoever approved these changes clearly didn't understand - or worse, didn't care - about what this place meant to the town. They should be ashamed. The only reason for my 3 stars is that the staff was friendly, knowledgeable and knowledge is power - go support your local library. Other than that, Aiken, get your act together. This was the biggest waste of money I've ever seen in my life. I'm glad I don't live here anymore.

There was an option to fill out an application online, so my question having done that was if I brought in all the documents they asked for (with a few extras on hand just in case), would everything go smoothly? And it did. I was subject to an initial greeting where my purpose for being there was verified and I took a number and got in line. In the middle of the afternoon, it was less than ten minutes before I was seen. Presenting my stuff, doing a couple of quick tests, and paying a pretty reasonable fee, I was out of there in probably less than half an hour total. Now, some people have more complicated situations, and some people clearly don't check out all the online resources before coming, but at least from my perspective it was a pretty smooth experience and the people working there seemed like they knew what they were doing.

It is a little colored and needing a power wash. It reads, "The battle of Aiken. Near this spot on February 11, 1865 was fought one of the final Confederate victories of the War Between The States. Federal Cavalry commanded by Major General Hugh Judson Kirkpatrick were attacked by Confederate Cavalry commanded by Major General Joseph Wheeler when the Federals entered Aiken from the south east along the South Carolina Railroad. The Federals retreated to Montmorenci where their infantry support was stationed. Successful defense of Aiken by the Confederates prevented the possible destruction of the cities of Aiken, Augusta and the Graniteville Mill." Online, there is more information. The Union general reached Aiken after looting and burning several other towns in South Carolina including Barnwell and Blackwell. The Union soldiers were quite cruel and we'll just leave it at that.
