Immediately after talking with them, we knew we wanted them to be the person to photograph our engagement, wedding (and hopefully more in the future)! We just clicked. Their work is bright, airy, colorful and creative, full of details and unique composition. They make space for everyone's requests and makes everyone feel at ease -- whether it's kids or you as the couple, so it doesn't matter if you typically feel comfortable in front of the camera or not, Shannon's personality and thoughtfulness makes you comfortable. Both for our engagement and our wedding day, they never over-directed us, they just let us be who we are and gave us the occasional suggestion for a pose, all while cheering us on. We loved the photos we saw on JPG's website and their commitment to customers was clear from our very first conversation with Joe. We worked together to come up with a price/package that met our needs and chose Matt Bender as our primary photographer. Our engagement session gave us a chance to get to know Matt and for him to know us. When the big day came, we felt very comfortable with him and he (along with 2 other photographers) did a great job managing our family and bridal party for group shots. Many guests commented that our photographers were awesome throughout the evening. This skill should not be overlooked when you are evaluating a wedding photographer! In the end, we were thrilled with the quality and variety of pictures. The photo journalistic style captured the true essence of the day and there were a lot of really fun shots. To top it off, all of JPG's wedding packages include a DVD or thumb drive of high-res images with personal use rights - which means you have full flexibility when it comes to albums and prints. Bottom line: JPG brought the style, quality, and personality we were looking for at a competitive price. They were easy to work with from start to finish and we could not have been happier with the results.

We not only cannot recommend JPG, we would strongly caution against using them. In spite of planning together with the photographer and being clear about our intentions not to photograph the prep, we had to wait for them to set up after we were long ready. The 14 weeks from event to actual pictures were astonishing. Even more so after getting them and seeing just how little thought and effort went into their editing and "organization". Also - be prepared to be referred to your contract repeatedly. They will hold it up anytime you ask for something.

We first booked her back in 2008, right after our engagement, based on the gorgeous photos we saw on her site & some correspondence via phone and email. I will say that I had never seen more beautiful wedding photography on a consistent basis. Hers is a truly beautiful art and I am so thankful we booked her to capture our engagement & wedding day in September of 2009. Post-wedding, the business side of Rae Barnes Photography was unsettling. I appreciate the busy holiday season and was prepared for that, but I ended up receiving an order with printing errors that was meant to be a Christmas present. She was very apologetic and sent several complimentary prints to make up for it, which was nice of her, but the present lost its wow factor on Christmas morning, for sure. When it came time to order the album, we thought we'd receive some guidance on how the whole process works. Nothing ever came. When I finally contacted her about it, she responded matter-of-factly, as if I should have know the whole process somehow already! Overall, I felt like I had to ask way too many questions about every little detail - when just a little bit of a heads up about the general workings of getting an album ordered would have been really nice. Once the album process did get underway, it took FOREVER to hear anything back. Come to find out, she had a total hard drive failure and lost a lot of work (luckily not our images), but never actually communicated that to us until we asked when we might see a draft. Apparently she had let blog readers and her twitter followers know - but didn't think to email her paying clients who were patiently waiting for a first look at their album. Pretty unprofessional and presumptuous to just think that I knew via one of those methods. Fast forward a couple MORE months and a few more "busy times" for her, we finally had our album. It was (and remains) very beautiful and we are thankful for it. I will say, however, it came in a box from some other photographer or studio with her logo taped over it. Really? After I get done paying $2k+ you can't brand your own album boxes? Finally, we ordered thank you cards through Rae (now, looking back, I wonder why we bothered) and received them only to find her GIANT logo across 25% of the back of the card. She's very gratuitous with pasting her logo on everything she possibly can, just be aware of that. We were almost embarrassed to send them around like that, especially for not really loving the whole experience with her services. Anyway, if you can put up with the only semi-professional business side, you will still likely be very happy with the images you get. Again, those are top notch. It's just too bad she couldn't manage her business in a better way.

He discussed with the couple and was happy to work with their plans and what they did and didn't want, and very thoughtful about the photography options with great suggestions. He was a super nice guy as well. The day of the event he was professional, very flexible in the face of lots of cooks in the kitchen, clearly knew what he was doing, and really nice to work with. He knew how to compose shots and make them look great. But most important, the pictures came out wonderful! Finally, his fee was completely reasonable and appropriate to the occasion (unlike other photographers we contacted who said they had a minimum wedding fee whether or not it was a large, standard wedding event). I would say he exceeded expectations, and made it a super comfortable low-stress process. I would 100% hire him again!
