Terrible Experience with Lake Michigan Pool & Outdoor Services / Calton's Lawn Care & Landscaping…read moreLLC I strongly advise against hiring Lake Michigan Pool & Outdoor Services or Calton's Lawn Care & Landscaping LLC, owned by Aron Calton (or Aron Dean) and Leslie Calton (Fox). Our experience was nothing short of a nightmare. We were promised that our pool installation would take two days. We paid a $1,900 deposit, which was supposed to cover half of the yard leveling and pool installation. However, things quickly went downhill from there. On the Monday they were supposed to start, they didn't even show up until 5:15 PM and had no equipment with them. They barely did any work and over the next two days, they didn't show up until after 3:00 PM and still didn't get the yard fully prepped for the pool installation. Aron even admitted that he only showed up on Monday to "save face" because they weren't actually ready to start our project. Communication from their end was virtually nonexistent. When we tried to ask for updates, we were met with rude and dismissive responses like, "We will be there. You don't need to check up on us." To make matters worse, Aron offered to lay rock and put in edging around the pool for an additional $400 on the first day. We paid them via Venmo, and while they did go get the rock, they never came back with the edging. As if that wasn't bad enough, during the limited time they were actually on-site, Aron and Leslie spoke poorly of other customers, even going so far as to call some of them "Karens." This kind of unprofessional behavior only added to our growing concerns. The situation escalated on Wednesday when the crew began arguing with one another, and the project manager nearly got into a physical altercation with Aron because he was preventing them from doing the job properly. After that, we didn't see Aron or Leslie again. The crew showed up again on Thursday and Saturday, but the pool was never installed. On Saturday, Aron called the project manager and told him to abandon the job because it was no longer profitable for them. We were left with an incomplete project and had to hire a different contractor to fix the yard preparation and install the pool. In the end, we wasted $2,300 on a job that was never completed. Aron and Leslie stopped responding to our requests for updates, and we received multiple updated contracts that we never signed off on, with new terms and verbiage added. This has been a hard lesson for us, and we regret not doing more research before hiring them. I'm writing this review to warn others so they don't get scammed like we did. Please beware if you're thinking about hiring any company affiliated with Aron Calton, Leslie Calton, or Lake Michigan Pool & Outdoor Services / Calton's Lawn Care & Landscaping LLC.

He actually put it in the second week of November (all the professionals said not to do it after October 15th) but he assured me it would be fine. It snowed the day after he seeded my lawn. When it was coming in poorly with many bare patches I told him it needed re-seeding which after several calls he agreed to finally do. I was expecting him to call before he came out but I received a text at 11:30 p.m. one night when it was PITCH DARK outside that he had just finished reseeding the bare patches in my lawn. I was disgusted and shocked to put it mildly and asked him how he could even see what he was doing. He told me "it wasn't his first rodeo" and he was wearing a headlamp. I was angry about this and told him no professional seeds a lawn at 11:30 p.m. at night--and he also didn't even rake it in! He just threw it on dry, packed ground and how would it grow like that?! He had promised me the previous fall that he absolutely guaranteed his work if there were any problems with it-- which is a HUGE lie because I have since told him SEVERAL times how unhappy I am with my lawn and he completely ignores my calls and text messages and will NOT RESPOND. HE IS THE ABSOLUTE WORST. He also had the AUDACITY to harass me the very next day after he seeded my lawn for his exorbitant bill of over $1700 (just for seeding the lawn and adding some loose straw to it); wanting to know when I was going to pay him. He also wanted to put in shrubs and trees and landscaping for me at the same time (in November) and I hadn't even moved into the home yet and it was almost Thanksgiving besides--not a time to plant trees or shrubs! I told him absolutely not. He then had the nerve to ask me to put him in touch with my HOA to see if he could get business from other neighbors in my neighborhood when I hadn't even moved in yet and certainly didn't know the HOA that well. I am sure my neighbors would NOT want his services besides!!!!!! My lawn looks absolutely TERRIBLE and Mike Kaufmann REFUSES to talk to me or honor his guarantee that he promised me (which isn't over for 4 months yet) for EXTREMELY OVERPRICED GRASS SEED and an unprofessional rip-off of a contractor. My grass looks orange and all my neighbors around me have beautiful lush green lawns of Kentucky bluegrass. Sickening! Another landscaping company manager told me he thought this contractor put in "highway grass" and said there certainly wasn't any Kentucky bluegrass or fescue in it. He said he had no idea what kind of grass it was and had never seen anything like it (other than highway grass). He mentioned it might need to be totally killed and have all new seed put down. My HOA manager also wondered what was wrong with it and said it looked "stemmy." I wouldn't use this landscaper again if he was the LAST landscaper on the planet. He lies, is overpriced and unprofessional, cannot be trusted and will totally RUIN your yard.

However, I paid for 4"'s of top soil for both areas, plus grass seed. In a few weeks, there was no grass and all weeds. Only about 1/4" of top soil was used. Mike was contacted several times to fix the issue. He did send out someone to throw down some extra grass seed, but it was sub par seed also. Haven't heard back from him.
