I had completely forgotten about this until I saw the sign as I was driving past and made sure to make a 15 mins detour to see the sculpture. It's absolutely breathtaking up close and in person, photos just don't do it justice. PSA if you're there and it's like 30 degrees out, maybe be mindful of other people who are there as well who would also like to take pics. I think for the majority of people who come through here, this is just a very nice rest stop with with a beautiful sculpture. For me, this was the destination. I wanted to see her, so we drove here, and she did not disappoint. I have been sitting here for an hour gazing on the majesty of this piece and I don't want to leave .. This rest stop has a lot of other things to offer as well, like clean restrooms and a visitor center with nature displays and information on Lewis and Clark. There are other sculptures as well as lots of seating for picnics or benches just to view the sculpture. There is also information on the artist as well as the tribes of The Dakotas. There is a large parking area but it is noted in multiple locations that you should not be here more than 3 hours and there is no overnight camping permitted here. So I will spend my 3 hours in awe of this work and appreciating it's beauty. I feel very lucky to have seen her in person. read more

Dignity of Earth and Sky is one of the most impressive statues that I have ever seen. It is so amazing that I stayed there to see it in the day and at night. 50 ft tall and made of stainless steel it is a sight to see. This is a rest area in Chamberlain South Dakota this beautiful statue was a gift to the people of South Dakota. The artist was Dale Lamphere. It was dedicated September 27, 2016. It was a gift to the people of South Dakota from the McKie family. She's is a stainless steel structure that stands 50 feet tall and 32 feet wide and weighs 27,000 pounds. Her dress,'leggings and moccasins were pattern from a 1850 native dress. Her quilt has 128 diamonds 4ft across and has 7 coats of paint on them. Led lights in the diamonds that light her quilt at night and flood lights to illuminate her. In her moccasins and throughout the structure there are air vents so the wind will blow through her. This is the most beautiful sculpture I've ever seen just stunning. read more

Pictures don't do justice. The statue is breathtaking and beautifully constructed. Visiting South Dakota for the first time, I definitely made this a priority to visit. I try to always remember that this land is stolen and indigenous communities in which this land was stolen from continuously are marginalized. Seeing this statue brings hope that these communities despite facing adversities are resisting through. The park it's located on overlooks the Missouri river and has plenty of free parking. It's one of those places where you have to stop when you are on a road trip. It's a rest stop above the Missouri River which has plenty of parking and it's free to view it. There's a warning sign along one of the trails to watch out for poisonous snakes. read more

Not your average rest stop! I am glad our cousin told us about this statue because we made sure to stop. The statue is huge and quite stunning as is the setting above the Missouri River. The rest stop also has displays inside the building about the journey of Lewis and Clark that came through this area on their way west. One of the more educational rest areas in the US. It needs to be noted that this is a rest area on I-90. It simply has some cool extra stuff that make it much better than your average rest area. The statue itself is an impressive site. It's very pretty. It's very elegant. It's powerful, thought-provoking, and inspiring. It's nice during the day, but I wish I had seen it at night too--apparently it lights up. The bathrooms at the rest area are about what you would expect, but the building also serves as a mini museum with artifacts, models, and historical information. read more
