After calling Direct Legal Service, Inc. on 12-29 to ensure that they could serve my small claim at the agent address listed, as well as accepting documents that I would mail to them, and starting on online account, I was told that they would not serve my papers. This news came after I sent the documents by certified mail. The news also came after being on hold on 12-30 and listening to their advertisement that "they do it right, they do it fast." The level of professionalism is through the roof, the only thing that tops that is the amount of knowledge they have about the industry, and not just their local area, but they are pretty well versed in the rules for every state I have had to use them for so far! Called twice and two different people answered - seems to be a call center? Both men who answered seemed annoyed and in a hurry to get me off the phone. Per their instructions I hesitantly placed an order to serve my restraining order online, where I wrote in their Special Instructions box - the ONLY place you can specify anything regarding such a dangerous and stressful matter, which I hoped meant they would take it seriously. The other reviews seemed decent so it should, right? WRONG. I had to follow up on the day of service (a woman who also wanted me off the phone) and guess what? They decided to serve it after I called, COMPLETELY against my instructions, and ALERTED THE NEIGHBORS. What is the point of Special Instructions if you are directly neglecting the only chance the person serving it has to communicate with you? I called back and expressed my distress - I live steps from the person being served and you are placing my SAFETY in direct danger! ANY legal document should be taken seriously and ESPECIALLY a restraining order! This is people's LIVES you are playing with - as if the actual legal case in itself isn't distressing enough, my God, we don't need your incompetence risking further escalation or undue harm on top of it. The lady who answered on the last call was also very sketchy and wanted me off the phone and kept stating she would tell the server and had ZERO intention of confirming it with me on paper trail. I had to grill her as to how I could receive confirmation and wound up e-mailing them with a complaint in bold letters and red font. There was zero concern for what was at stake, much less for correcting how badly this reflects on their company! When they finally called me back, the same lady answered and transferred me to "David," who started off trying to charge me $195 for "appointed times" (come on, you know full well that is not what I am asking for, just basic SENSIBILITY that your clients are requesting for a time and that you are at least ACKNOWLEDGING it as a competent company). My roommate was staring at me in horror hearing the way he condescended to me about "having hundreds of papers to serve all day" - uh, I'm aware, that's literally what you get paid to do, if you're unable to answer simply how it works that's not my issue. He was extremely condescending and would not answer my question directly - and after paragraphs of irrelevant information finally stated I would get attempts at different times of day. Nowhere does it state that on their site or in their excessively ambiguous and exploitative correspondence. At all. And even if it did, basic professionalism and ability to communicate directly is just that. They do not have that capability. These are very basic, BASIC instructions. Clearly their "SPECIAL Instructions" aren't special enough. I have NEVER had this issue with other process server companies, they usually just.. TALK to you and understand what you're saying without going around in circles to justify why they are trying to upsell you. Any company that only offers services through the internet is a breeding ground for issues, and if your staff can't even READ, there is no hope for quality of service. You get what you pay for. I don't know who these other fake "reviews" claim are following up with them, because no one is taking my order seriously nor have I ever been told any names unless I pulled teeth to get them. Even asking for my process server's name, they vaguely told me to check my case which I was STARING at and had no names listed, just notes. Who knows if they even attempted service when there's no proof? The last company I worked with took actual photos and was extremely professional and easy to communicate with throughout the process. I had to directly ask her over and over for any answers. I regret switching companies, but thankfully they didn't even have the sense to charge me until they caught wind of my complaint, so I canceled the order altogether (and went with a better company who is the exact opposite and made it a PAINLESS and easy process, completed pleasantly and within minutes, whew!). There is zero transparency and professionalism in this entire process, and zero common sense regarding what a petitioner needs confirmed IN WRITING on their end to HELP them in their case. If you decide to go with this company, good luck, they're toxic, add their own risk and compound stress and personal behavioral issues on top of your already difficult circumstances. They run you in circles and waste time gaslighting you because they only care about money - when they should be prioritizing the basics of serving your case. You're on your own. read more

I ask them over the phone if they can serve the defendant at an address he is related to, even though he won't be there. They say they can't tell me that, because it's legal advice. I purchase their service and write them an email stating again the specifics of my case and asking if I have enough information for them to serve the defendant. They reply they do. Three days after the service was supposed to take place, they still don't update the case on the website. I call them and they say they were not able to serve the defendant for the same reasons I had told them over the phone and by email. I write them asking if I can have some sort of reimbursement and they don't even reply. I contact another company that operates in a more transparent way and with their advice I am able to have the papers served. read more

After I uploaded documents on their web portal, they served the corporation a day earlier than promised and filed proof of service on the same day. I can't speak to the negative experiences in the other reviews, but if you have a simple service request where the defendant is a corporation that can't run away, Direct Legal Support is great. read more

I had a definite deadline for personal service on my order, and 5 days after the deadline they informed me (well, they didn't inform me - I called to check!) that the attempt had failed. I could have given the alternate address - if they had bothered to call me!! I insisted that they get the document served the day I learned of their mistake - and I got verbal confirmation over the phone that it was done, but that was 10 days ago and I STILL don't have written confirmation!! I emailed again today and the "manager" had to ask me what firm I was "calling" from (in an email) so she could look it up....um, hi my firm name is in my email address...and in my signature... They are just too unreliable to trust with time sensitive service. I use One Legal as much as possible, and for things One Legal won't do I've had good luck with Janney & Janney. read more

As a legality business, they are extremely unprofessional. A man, I was later informed was Joe, has continuously come back to serve someone in my building and would leave after continuously being told by different people that they do not come into this location, but today the man turned slightly aggressive. He entered and asked for said person and after politely informing them they weren't here and that I don't know when I'd be able to see them, he began to raise his voice and shove his way in. As I'm not sure what's going on, I'm was quite shooken up. He proceeded to leave the papers and took pictures of us. I took a picture of the number on his car as I was concerned about how to pass the papers on. Upon answer, I had let the man know that I was incapable of passing them on and that I didn't know how to read the documents and he also became aggressive as I was only trying to ask for help. I explained to him that I have never seen documents like these and he just kept saying it wasn't his problem and eventually hung up on me. So now, whoever I need to pass these onto, if even capable, is going to be misinformed. Very unprofessional, aggressive and hostile workers. Also if you're trying to actually serve someone, these are not the people you should go to. read more

Because of their incompetence I was unable to attend my court proceedings and now have to wait another two months to do so. They don't explain their services or the details involved, and trying to talk to them is like talking to a child.I don't know how they've stayed in business for so long. I had service that had to be completed on multiple companies in multiple states, as well as on a person in multiple states. It was not susceptible to ordering online, so Mike Kern, the company president himself, worked with me directly to get the project done. He worked through the weekend himself, notwithstanding that he was leaving on vacation for a week. Everything was perfect, paperwork error free and service completed timely. Despite such specialized service, the bill was just the standard rate, which itself is much less than I would expect anywhere.
