Beware! I went to DBS because I prefer to support local business, but I find DBS is not only expensive but also quite unhelpful. I feel ripped off, more than by any other Humboldt County business. My "native soil report" shows minimal useful information, and the subsequent and even more expensive "nutrient management plan" recommends a lot of boutique items with no description of what each one is for or how it addresses the shortfalls they found. Moreover, they demand additional charges for any verbal explanation of how they determined their soil report and recommendations. Recommendations suggest an additional $400 worth of exotics from Humboldt Ag Supply, for a few raised beds. For a much better value, I suggest A&L Western Labs in Modesto, which actually provides real world answers at a far more reasonable price. read more

This is the only lab in Humboldt I trust with giving me accurate lab results fast and then taking those results and explaining them to me in a way that fits into my farm plan. Called about my results from logan labs. There were huge inconsistencies between reports. Dirty Biz said I had high sodium and sulfur. Logan labs has me in the ideal range. Dirty Biz explanation for this was...."if you took 2 cups out of the same bag of Black Gold Potting Soil, and then took two more cups out of the same exact bag, then you can't expect similar results because their lab results vary??????? So now they have admitted to no having accurate testings, tests which they can't replicate the results. When I called and asked, "why does your lab show different results than Logan Labs on sulfur and sodium?" The lady was all worked up and said, "you are making me mad and I can't talk to you about this....." Sorry I asked a question about my lab results........ Use this company with extreme caution. I also asked why they were twice the cost with half the results and they told me that wasn't true.....Well...... I absolutely love DBS! All of these people who posted bad reviews don't understand the complex world of agricultural soil science and pest management, apparently...eye roll.......I have used many labs to test soil, and, if you are a competent farmer, you know that EVERY LAB IS GOING TO COME BACK TO YOU WITH DIFFERENT RESULTS!!! This is a common fact in the world of soil and ag testing. Testing methods differ, and reproducibility differs based on the lab methods used to test a person's soil. So, I chose to stick with the one lab I trust, DBS. Their testing methods are the most current, given the science and research out there. Their customer service rocks, and these girls know their stuff, through and through. They saved me money, and time, and don't beat around the bush about what I need to do better. Their pest ID program and beneficial insect program helped me ween off of pesticides, and their partner labs and Hum Ag helped me ammend, and test for metals and pesticides. Hahahaha, its funny, because one review on here says that DBS didn't find a pest while Soilscape did, and I have the exact opposite experience. Soilscape (I used to go to them) couldn't find any pests in my sample, and I took it to DBS for a second opinion, and they found Thrips and Root Aphids...That is when I started testing with them. Thanks DBS, for being here in Humboldt. Side note, the OTHER soil lab in town (soilscape) doesn't even come close to how well I get treated at DBS. Their soil reports were way off, and they tried to throw DBS under the bus to me, which I found so unprofessional! Check out how a lab uses third party certifications to keep them valid, and you'll find that Soilscape doesn't participate in a third party certification program, whereas, DBS does. So, I know that the results I receive are accurate, and DBS is held accountable by the Minnesota Department of Agriculture Standards! Awesome work ladies!!! read more

Went in for a pest test said I was completely clean. Took same samples to soil scape and on the first leaf found a huge aphid. They didn't even have to send in for analysis. I would never go to dirty business again and would recommend to nobody. There either a money grab or incompetent. read more
