I will start by saying we had a great refresher course on day 1. One instructor for my son and I after not diving for 2 years. He was very thorough and helpful. We also signed up for a second day, but found out the day before that there was not going to be a guide for anyone on the boat. We were surprised having never experienced that before. Nothing on their website about it, nothing about that in our several communications leading up to it. If it were shallower and if it were not as murky of water we probably would have done it. Ultimately we decided not to go due to our lack of confidence with the situation. Just a heads up. You can probably request a guide up front but will pay more. We tried to add one, but their phone was disconnected and got no response by email either. So we paid for nothing essentially. Not cool. read more

So went here for Memorial weekend and did 3 dives on Saturday and 2 on Sunday. I did the morning dives but they do offer afternoon dives. The dive shop was great and really accommodated us. The boat we were on was the Captains Lady with Leroy. Leroy was awesome and really tries to accommodate his diver's experience with NC wrecks. Especially trying to let you see the sharks. His boat dives 6 so if you want his boat you have to request very early to get on. I heard good things about the larger boat though as far as making sure their boat sees sharks too. Now, if you don't have dives in the last year they really caution these boats as you are not guided. Not sure if you can hire one for deep dives. But for the in shore dives no issue. Shop has tanks and weights and these are really affordable. Definitely coming back. read more

I thought this dive shop was amazing. All the staff was very friendly and the rental process was so easy. This was our first non-certification dive and everyone was so helpful including the other guests in making us feel comfortable. I wanted to see a shark and got to so I'm happy. There was a tiny bit of misinformation regarding the dive so we weren't quite prepared for what we were getting into but it ended up being good practice anyways. We were told that we would be walking in from shore and swimming to the site a short distance off the shore but we ended up on a boat dive. Like I said great practice but unexpected. We also expected to be shallower than 50 feet but our dive was about 70ft. Again not a problem but unexpected. We had reasons for wanting our dives to be a certain way but everything turned out fine. I did a weekend of diving with Discovery Diving, with 5 dives exploring wrecks at the Graveyard of the Atlantic. The staff at the shop were very friendly during the booking and checking in process, and went out of their way to help me with my tanks, and getting them analysed (as their analyser wasn't one I was familiar with). The boat was roomy and comfortable, which is just as well as it was a bumpy two hour sail out. The crew on the boat were very professional and competent, but did not go out of their way to help guest with anything. As an experienced diver, I was fine with this, but can see how a newer diver might have needed more help and interaction. The wrecks were all extremely interesting, and I wish I could have spent more time down with them, but no deco time was limited as they were all about 30 metres down. I was also hoping to be able to see sand tiger sharks, but did not manage to - although guests said there were lots the day before! Dive instructors: I have to give credit to the dive instructors that I had. They were awesome. Very enthusiastic and enjoyable to be around (I was getting my advanced certification). General staff: they seemed to not be all on the same page. They were often confused as to what we were doing there and what we had signed up for. Equipment: BRING YOUR OWN. The regulator I used had me sucking in water every time I took a breath. The shop's response was that that's what you get with rental equipment. I still got charged for it. Let me tell you- diving at 90ft and feeling like you're drowning bc of bad equipment is not a fun experience. Check-out dive site: Radio Island, where I did my navigation dive had about 4ft of visibility. I chose to drive 5+ hours bc they said they had good visibility. (Ok, yes- at Areolus there was 50-75ft of vis where I did an elective wreck dive). Still, the dredging they were doing made conditions much worse. Id suggest asking them about that before committing. Pricing: I wasn't expecting to be charged for renting equipment as a student. It wasn't something that was mentioned to me when I signed up for the class and it ended up costing $100 for 2 dives. read more

I'll start this review by disclosing that I paid for two divers even though only one dove. I'd made my reservation well in advance and when bad weather the day before forced a cancellation and rescheduling my dive partner couldn't dive on the rescheduled date they charged me for both anyway the main complaint however it's about the safety and quality of the gear rental gear. Gear was torn with holes in booties., broken straps missing weight inserts to bcd. There was no safety orientation by the captain pointing out the location of life vests and a half hearted orientation to the site. With no dive planning at all. They even discouraged giving the all ok sign after entering the water. I was berated with them saying " this is big boy diving. We'll know if somethings wrong". I did like the cable and rope systems they used to guide divers to the wreck site and the crew was helpful and courteous. Sure to bring your own food and water this is no frills diving. read more

UNPROFESSIONAL I paid and secured an open water class for certain dates. Upon arriving to the first day of class, I was informed by the owner that she had changed the original dates. Instead of the class being 4 days long, she was extending it. I informed her that we had to have the class completed by a certain date because some in my group were here from out of state and would have to be returning home. She assured us that she would figure something out. So, with her reassurance, we proceeded with the class. At the end of the second day of class, she still did not have a solution to the dilemma. Five days later, I requested a refund since she had not found a solution and, therefore, would not be able to get certified. She would only refund $215 of the $455 I paid. I have asked an employee as the reason for the difference and he could not give me an explanation. I have visited the company for an explanation and the employee said that I would have to speak with the owner who was upstairs at the time. He returned from upstairs to tell me that she was busy and could not speak to me. She has not replied to my email. I was assured from the beginning of the class that she would "figure something out". She did not. She did, however, take my money and waste my time. This company is unprofessional and I wouldn't recommend them to anyone. BEWARE! I WOULD USE A DIFFERENT COMPANY!!! read more

I wouldn't recommend this school to anyone. They tend to charge the VA taking away from veterans benefits without giving what they charged. They also take advantage of VocRehab telling veterans to use them so that we can get free gear that isnt needed so that they can over price to make more money off the government. They also sell you gear that's either been used or sell you the wrong gear as they charge the government. To all and any veteran that has had a bad experience please call the White House VA at 18559482311 and let them know about these issues. Also complain about the way they treat you. I was used to work for free and learned nothing from it. If you want your time completely wasted with no retribution you found the spot! My husband booked a week in advance for an afternoon dive on a beautiful day. He dragged all his gear from Baltimore, left our group of friends partying on the beach the Sunday of Memorial Day weekend and headed off for the 45 minute drive to the dive shop, all after calling them an hour before leaving to confirm the dive was still on. When he arrived he was quickly told that the dive had been cancelled. Visibility was great, weather was great, no good excuse was provided. They offered to go out another day but he did not have another day. Not only did he miss hanging out with us on the beach with friends that traveled from all over but he also missed the opportunity to log a recent dive before we head off to Hawaii for a night dive. Really frustrating. They offered nothing else. read more

I can't say little enough about Discovery Diving. That's what happens when I'm extremely ticked off. My wife and I are getting back into diving after about ten years off. Although equipment is fundamentally the same as when I was certified in 1980, much of the technology has changed since we were last in the water. Because of this, we rely on the advice and opinions of dive shop owners to steer us in the right direction. In my view, they should have our best interests in mind as we navigate through the myriad options available. Why, then, did Discovery Diving sell my wife an obsolete BCD as "new", knowing that it had been sitting in the shop for about eight years? As my wife was trying to adjust the cummerbund on her new vest, she noticed that the adjustment points did not match up to the printed instructions that came with the BCD. Searching online, none of the available videos showed the same adjustment hardware configuration. Not even close. At a bit of a loss, we called the BCD manufacturer's customer support line. After a long search for the serial number on the vest -- it was so old that even customer service didn't know where to look -- they ran the serial number to find that it was one of the first of its kind ever made, and that it dated back approximately nine years. All things deteriorate over time. But fabric, rubber, and plastic can degrade badly over years, even if not used. This BCD had been sitting in the front window of the store, collecting sunshine for all that time. When I stop to think about the implications of diving a potentially deteriorated BCD, my blood boils. Selling an old BCD to an unwitting customer puts both my wife's and my life at risk. If this is the way that Discovery Diving runs their retail operation, I can't imagine how safety-concious they would be on the water. Personally, I don't want to find out. read more

Not only were these people rude from the time they got our money to the time the refunded it for bad conditions. They refused to allow us to cancel the trip without total loss of the purchase price or "if someone took our spot" we would still lose 10%, and only receive store credit. With bad conditions in the forecast we left charlotte, spent $157 at a bnb, only to wake up early with a canceled trip that we had to go all the way to the shop to find out about. The forecast said it would be rough, and at anytime they could have allowed us to back out, but the greed of this little run down shop prevailed. Screw this place stay away at all cost. read more

I went through OWSI and MSDT with Discovery Diving. I love the instructors and the school but the business ethics of the Dive shop leaves much to be desired. In the two years plus time that i spent in and around the shop, i watched as many loyal customers sought classes and equipment from other locations, because their loyalty meant little in comparison to shops bottom line. Below are some of my personal grievances 1. Last year i reserved the entire hotel for my wedding, the shop notified me that they were going to release rooms that were not yet payed for, to include mine.....the BRIDE. so my husband and i spent our wedding night apart from each other, until a family member bunked with someone else. How about a warning that our room wasn't paid yet, or maybe a comp, for amount of business we brought you? Didnt know until the weekend of, when everything else was all booked (4th of July weekend) 2. I was due gear, accounted for in budget as part of one of my specialties, which i did not receive before the end of class, so i had to switch one of my specialties from Dry suit to Night Diving, in order to finish in time. I still haven't received that dry suit. 3. The shop created an instore credit account for me, without my knowledge or authorization, which they presented me at the at the end of my course. I am there every weekend since April and have paid my tickets each weekend. anything that wasnt paid should have been brought to my attention immediately. 4. i need to obtain check out dives for certifications while in MSDT, so i purposefully requested not to be put on the charters, becuase i had all the dives i needed for my specialties. i was charged for those charters against the 20 that were budgeted in my course for days that chose to do check out dives. These were for classes that i had worked with in the classroom ,and pool and whos check out dives were given to other instructors, who did not need them. As a result i needed to bring my own students to class from fayetteville, for which i was charged pool time. This would have never been an issue if my original request was honored. read more

Booked a standard offshore/inshore two tank trip today. Clear skies, light wind. no ocean swells and about 18" of chop. Full boat. Captain chose 2 inshore sites (never out of sight of land) with both depths in the 60-65 ft range. What a disappointment and truly not representative of NC diving. I dive mostly with Leroy of the Captains lady and he ALWAYS takes care of his divers!! He always makes our trips enjoyable and gets us the best diving with the best conditions!
