Granted, if you are just passing through it is expensive, or at least an added expense to buy the $2.00 card. The card is reusable, I've had mine for over 2 years. Unless you added 3xs the soap needed the machines wash and rinse your clothes completely!!! They are not stingy with the water useage. Do you open a machine an it smells of dirty water? No! I have been to others that by the smell of the water, I can swear have a 25 ft well. I know the smell I live in Redland. They don't seem to be recycling water or if they do, they have a great system. I'm sure that the exra expense of the washers helps cover the loss of being open at 3AM. I have done laundry at 3 AM. There is an attendant there all night.
