Some of the worst customer service/responsiveness I've ever experienced on this earth…read more They're not particularly rude or even unpleasant, but you better hope to all that's holy that you never need to get a callback, or an update, or some paperwork etc...you're not going to get it. I had to bother them for 6 weeks to get a simple copy of my map sent to me via email...the survey itself took almost a full year to be submitted to the county, and then when very minor changes needed made for a resubmission? Months went by before I called them to check on the status of the changes and refile...they hadn't done anything with it. If you're so busy that you can't handle the customers you have, stop taking customers!! Time management skills leave everything to be desired, I've never seen anything quite like it. Cannot recommend. Stay far away.

Apparently they have claimed and insisted they were "right" in spite of there being THREE OTHER surveys that indicated they were wrong. Now, according to our neighbor, they won't return calls or address the issue, which has now resulted in court proceedings. Our attorneys informed us that the've got multiple cases involving bad surveys with these guys, and thus, it would seem they don't know WTF they are doing.

My escrow officer, Anne Hoshida retired, but no one ever told me. The replacement escrow officer, Keith, never contacted me, and to this day, still hasn't, even after I filed complaints about the bad communication with his manager. They wait until the last minute to send out paperwork to be signed. They don't read emails, and you have to call chase them to do their job. They are all apologetic when called on their poor customer service, but nothing actually changes. I just discovered on my closing statement that two organizations have demanded a "transfer fee" of $100 each for escrow to close, yet I am not actually legally required to be a part of either organization based on my deed. Yet First American is now telling me they "can't close until this issue is resolved." So basically, if anyone makes a demand of escrow, they will hold you up. This has been an extremely frustrating escrow, and First American hasn't done much to make it any easier. I would NEVER EVER use this company again for my escrow needs.

Couldn't have asked for a better transaction. First American Title is located on the second floor of the Merrill Lynch building. Their facility is immaculate, and they've adapted to make signing paperwork a coronavirus-compatible experience, with hand sanitizer dispensers, plexiglass barriers and single-use pens. I highly recommend using their services. Thanks Stephanie (and Jaime Luster, our realtor who hooked us up with Stephanie.) An overall great experience.

My family and I decided to sell our home (primarily used as a vacation home) in Hilo. One huge complication, though -- we live more than 2,000 miles away on the mainland. We weren't sure how to prepare the home for sale, negotiate offers, and prepare the documentation required to close the deal. We needed a local realtor ... and discovered Howard through Yelp. We were glad we did. (He deserves all the 5-star reviews in Yelp and Google.) Howard is about as perfect a real estate professional as you could imagine. He's thoroughly familiar with the Hilo and Puna real estate markets, and his extensive experience was evident from day one. He knew what, how, and how much to invest (time and money) to make the home marketable for an immediate sale. We listed the home for a bit over what we thought was the market value. Thanks to Howard's expertise and diligence, though, the home was on the market for just 3 days, during which we received 4 competitive offers. (I understand that homes in Hilo typically remain on the market for well over 2 months.) And we ended up selling at 5% over the list price! Needless to say, we were pleased with the outcome. Howard is also responsive to all communications. I remember being shocked (in a positive way) at his diligence, from day one: I reached out to him via text just after Christmas. Due to the holiday season, when many businesses are closed, I didn't expect a reply until perhaps the New Year. Instead, he replied within 15 minutes of my text! My family and I received that degree of responsiveness throughout the sale. We were so fortunate. We also appreciated Howard's customer-friendly, positive attitude (Aloha spirit). Every conversation, whether business-related or not, was a pleasure. Needless to say, I highly recommend his services. If you're in the market to buy or sell real property in or around Hilo, rest assured that Howard can and will make the process pain-free.
