What really helped was processing the registration paperwork online and letting the office already have that information in their system. You just need to printout the preregistration paperwork that they send you afterwards in the email and bring it with you along with proof of residence and of course the title of ownership. After you process your request online, the DMV sends you a text message and you can use that to check in for your appointment or walk-in and use their check-in kiosk. I opted to use my phone and respond through link on the text message. Their system accurately tells you where you are in line and how many people are currently waiting in front of you. Very simple process to follow. I did have to wait 20 min because of the folks that were ahead of me. There was a little wait time but no worries. 5 min to only process the paperwork and immediately get the plates. How quick is that? CA is back in the stone ages and has not done anything whatsoever to improve their processes. DMV is the last last place anyone would want to visit unless it was absolutely necessary but this experience was quite pleasant nonetheless. The lady that helped me was also so friendly. Registration papers take about 3-6 weeks to arrive to your home address. Plenty of parking and seating and nobody was standing around.

And that she was - having just passed the driving test at an offsite location in Wilsonville, the daughter and I went to the nearest DMV to get her license. It turned out the Sherwood branch was a zoo, packed with people, a bit surprising for a Tuesday. Once we made our way to the Info booth, we learned that despite having her photo ID / permit, they still needed her birth certificate (again) and supporting documents. So we left empty handed and headed home. Once in Salem, we grabbed what we needed and headed to our local office. I was a bit nervous to see the lines, but was quickly relieved to see a mere fraction of the people in the last branch. She was quickly assigned a number, with only two people ahead, and just like that - there's a new independent teen driver sharing the roadway. Don't fret, if anything, she's overly cautious! Yes, obligatory photo snapped in front of the DMV sign with her temporary license, but no permission to share. I don't know whether to cry tears of joy or sadness now that she can come and go in her own car.

Co, BTW), the gentleman working window 8, whose name I have shamefully failed to note, was friendly, patient, and helpful, answer questions and ensuring that all forms were filled out properly, and all fees and required documents clearly specified. What a great service! So I gave her my phone number and was able to wait outside in the comfort of my own car and enjoy reading my book. Their system sent me a few updates as my spot in line approached. They also provided a link to web page where I could view my wait status. That was nice since I didn't have to worry about losing my place in line while I waited outside I ended up waiting just 20 minutes (they served 11 folks in that time) and got my job done in two minutes. So I had a great experience here and especially appreciate the hard work DMV has done to serve us and minimize the pain of going to the DMV office. Kudos! :)
