Ah, how I love the Arndale Food Market. And it's just one guy! Richard Morphett to be precise. His stall is one of the smallest at the market, nestled next to the smoothie stop, and he always has around five varieties of soup to choose from. At the moment the flavours are particularly festive, with the options of turkey and a chestnut one which I plumped for. They're fresh-tasting, wholesome and delicious, and I was thoroughly chuffed with my choice. When I popped along there was only one meat option, which means plenty of pondering for veggies. Plus Richard's lovely. I sat at the table and chair near to his stall, people-watching (witnessing panic buying in the Arndale Centre is always a larf and a half) and it's nice to see that those who run the individual stalls are all friends with one another. Now this might be a pretty simple review, but it's a pretty simple service. Great soup, yummy rolls, friendly service and all cheap as chips. What more could you ask?

Great atmosphere underneath, and I mean FAR underneath, as in you have to look high up to see peoples' feet going past the window. Crazy, non? Lots of places to sit, which is great for me as I'm way too old to stand up at gigs for extended periods of time and I hurt my foot this week. #passtheprunes Fab sound and a lovely way to see lesser known bands. Oh, and did I mention it was free? Yes, we like free. 2) Meat. ACE. So for a mere £6, I got a big ol' juicy cooked-pink-in-the-middle burger pile of brilliance in a giganto bun with gherkins, salad and all kinds of amazeballs sauce. The chips where somewhere between wedges and fries - long story short, they were MASSIVE. Ketchup was offered and we got a generous ramekin of the stuff, and it was served on a rustic wooden board. It ain't just about soup! My maid of honour had the same dish, while Fiancé and Jemma G both had a soup coronation chicken combo. Their sandwiches were lovely, soft, deliciously spiced and had proper hunks of chicken (I tried it of course), and the satay soup was peanutty, flavoursome and creamy (I tried that too). Top marks for both soup and chips being served in camping mugs. Me likey. AWESOME food, like, truly delicious, cheap, and it might be Northern Quarter-based, but it does not have the pretention. Hm. They have a lot of liquor behind the bar for somewhere that doesn't do cocktails. I understand it's onerous to have all conceivable cocktail ingredients if you're really a beer specialist (and they do seem to have a great range of beer, btw) but I do think it would be nice if bars like this at least had 3-4 house cocktails for those of us they don't like beer or slightly dodgy house wine but wish to hang with our friends that do. Bartender also struggled with our request for tap water, which was less excusable. Meanwhile, the DJ was playing some awful music. "It's just noise, isn't it," pointed out one of the crowd, while apologising for being an Old Man. But it wasn't that we just didn't like the music or that it was too loud, is that the sound system couldn't take it and the sound quality/distortion was incredibly grating. Not relaxing. Shame really because I like the spacious layout, gig posters in the toilet, and the delicious bourbon Jonny Q kindly bestowed upon me. I'd go again if someone suggested it but given the amount of good bars in the NQ it's not top of my list for a repeat visit/recommendation in terms of drinking. HOWEVER the food might be a different story - the other reviews of meal-based visits have been great so I will try to return one lunchtime. UPDATE: went back for a Carefully Planned Festival - the music venue downstairs is one of the biggest/most attractive in the NQ although it smells SO WRONG and nobody could work out WHAT the smell was which was even more disturbing.

The only criticism I would have is that not a great deal of thought has been put into the furntiture / layout. Although it is all lovely wooden clunky stuff it really doesn't make best use of the space; if they had gone for something a little less rustic and a bit more slimline then you might be able to get to a table in the corner without putting your shopping in someone's soup. But if that's the worst criticism I can think of they must be doing something right...

We went with Happy House as it was the highest rated on justeat.com (yeah, I cheated on yelp. Sometimes these things just kinda happen. I'm sorry. I'll try harder in the future.) and we were not disappointed. With Manchu Wok in Manchester being a staple, I was keen to find a replacement. The portion sizes were great- we shared 2 soups, 2 starters and 2 mains between 3- and actually only ate 1 of the mains between the three of us as the starters had been so generous. The hot and sour soup we got was good- not too salty (often a problem) and it had loads of tasty morsels floating about. The crabmeat and sweet corn soup had large chunks of crabmeat in it. The prawn toast was far better than Manchu Wok- nearly at Fusion standard. It had a thick layer of prawn-y goodness and wasn't too greasy. And we got 5 pieces, which is pretty decent. The salt and pepper ribs were well tasty. We got more than 10- some big, some small- all full of flavour despite being not that spicy. Barring one or two they were really meaty. Came with peppers, onions and chillies. We shared a new special chow mein- it came in a large tub and one portion easily filled the three of us after all those starters and we shared the second one for lunch between the three of us again and will all e full until dinner. It comes with good, fresh noodles, loads of veg and loads of meat- large bits of chicken, beef and amazing prawns- by far the highlight of the meal. Seriously those prawns! They were really well cooked- not at all hard or chewy- just really tender and soft. Sadly only two or three prawns in the dish but if you were having this to yourself or between two/ three that's still a prawn each! Super tasty. Price was pretty good and delivery was quick- plus they gave us free prawn crackers. Everyone loves a freebee! Going to have to explore the other takeaway joints but I have a feeling we'll be returning to Happy House.

Despite your wintry precautions, your hands are frozen, and your nose is as red as postbox. It's time to warm up. Take a wander up New Briggate, or Vicar Lane, and make tracks towards The Grand Arcade. Inside, as well as a host of handmade goodies in all varieties, you'll find Thistlemist Farm - what remedy is this? This remedy for cold, warding against winter flus, and general stomach filler, is the beauty that is locally crafted, lovingly made, delicious homemade soup. Ahhhh soup. Ne'er were there a better tonic for the Autumn days. My absolute favourite used to be the Coconut and Tomato, but alas, that's no longer available, and has been committed to memory only. However, in place, you'll find a beautiful range of creations. Patatas bravas - a spicy, warming, delicious soup perfect with a bit of olive encrusted ciabatta. How about a medly of country vegetables to give you a tasty vitamin boost? These packets come size huge, and you can pick up two for a fiver. They feed two easily, so that's four day's portions at £1.25 a pop. Right?! And they last, so fear not. Cooking sauces available too, if you're dead bored of things like Mr Bens. Which, let's be honest, we all are, aren't we? Get down, and treat yourself to something delicious, affordable, and generally lovely.

Sadly, he was a no show...but enough of him, we're talking about Thistlemist Farm aren't we? Being a bit pushed for time on my break, I thought I'd try and pick up some lunch while I was there. I spotted the quiche on Thistlemist Farm's counter, and ummed and ahhed slightly about whether to go for it. I've never really been a big fan of quiche, I've always been a bit take it or leave it - usually trying a slice at buffets and the like. I went for the quiche in the end, figuring I wouldn't have time to grab anything else. and opted for the all day breakfast quiche. All I can say is WOW. I'm now a quiche convert! It was just heavenly, mouthful after mouthful. Perfectly cooked, and full of flavour, not like the bland buffet quiches of my past! I've since been back and am now trying my way through the soups. The carrot parsnip and apple soup is just amazing, and the thai green soup follows a very very close second to it. Next on my list is the patatas bravas soup. One pouch is good for two hearty servings, and they'll keep in the fridge for a while, or can be frozen too! At £2.95 each (or 2 for £5) it's a good lunch bargain. The only let-down to the one in the Handpicked Hall is that it's not open on Mondays and Tuesdays, however that's not in Thistlemist Farm's control as the whole hall is closed, so I haven't accounted for that in my rating. Mothers Day Surprise!…read more We wanted to take the Mothers somewhere nice and out of town and had seen The Garden Kitchen had been visited by a number of our friends and family on Facebook, all giving great reviews and I can see why! We arrived for final service at 6pm and as you can imagine it was very busy on Mothers Day. The maître d' came straight over to us to let us know how long it would be until we were seated and continuously gave us progress updates. Whilst waiting we perused the small shop of local produce, had a drink and soaked up our surroundings. The Tea Room is a new addition to Holden Clough Nursery being built in the last few years, but looks like it should have always been there! It is beautiful and sympathetically designed to its surroundings. So, the food....WOW! I'd seen pictures but when our Afternoon Tea arrived on a mini picnic bench I felt like clapping!! (In fact, I think I did!!) Such a great idea and adds a little bit of originality and quirkiness to your experience. Everything on my picnic bench was delicious. The Mushroom soup was silky, creamy and full of flavour. The mini Roast Beef Dinner served in an individual yorkshire pudding was beautiful and of course came with a little jug of gravy and beef was tender and pink. The scone was fresh and light with jam that had just the right sweetness and fruit mix. My other main highlight was the Rocky Road, I'm not usually a fan because its too rich and sweet but O-M-G this was amazing. I still find myself thinking about it now two days on. The chocolate melts in your mouth to find small nuggets of biscuit and mini marshmallows.....all washed down with a great cup of coffee. John & Kate who own and run The Garden Kitchen have done a fanstastic job transforming Holden Clough Nursery over the last few years. The service, quality of food and surroundings are 10/10. I went with my mum, sister and partner for the Valentine's afternoon tea, it was great it was so different from traditional afternoon tea you got soup in a tea cup, two open top sandwiches and a mini quiche which was a nice change from just sandwiches. The cakes you got was a scone. A mini red velvet cake, a heart biscuit, marshmallows with chocolate, profiterole with white chocolate and a mini love potion in a glass boot. We got a glass of pink proseco it was £19.99 each which is a little expensive for the place as its a tree nursery but they do a different theme for different seasons so it's well worth a visit.
