It truly made me want to pick them up and start skipping through a nearby meadow, wearing a flowing dress and possibly conversing with tamed animals. Too far? Forget it. A former vegetarian myself, I understand the convenience of having somewhere like Out Of This World to rely on in a city centre. It means being able to purchase items which are sometimes not even stocked in the larger supermarkets, to maintain a balanced diet without being forced to use unwanted substitutions. Too well stocked to be a health food shop, Out Of This World falls into the category of health food supermarket. There is a huge range of the usual nuts, seeds and pulses; but also a surprising number of Traidcraft toiletries, recycled stationary, hair dye and household cleaning products. Alongside fairly traded tea and coffee, vitamins, supplements and natural remedies, the store also caters for sufferers of restrictive diets. There is a varied selection of groceries for people who have to omit gluten, wheat and diary from their nutritional intake, and a large number of vegetarian and vegan ready meals. One reason why I particularly like Out Of This World, is because they stock Samuel Smith ale and lager. A real favourite with my Other Half and I, they provide us with a constant hoard. Bondgate Bakery in Otley supply the store with freshly baked loaves and buns, with gluten and wheat free alternatives available. A deli counter offers freshly made quiches, samosas and wraps - a handy lunch or a lazy supper. The staff are very approachable and were more than happy to assist me in finding a difficult item for a family member. What I mean by that, is my Gran was looking for bee pollen, because the lothario that she listens to on her local radio station had been praising its medical benefits. Any shop that can help me in my quest for bee pollen, has earned respect in my eyes.

A lot of places have changed in what feels like a very small space of time, but not Out Of This World. I used to come here on Saturdays to purchase their organic milk and elderflower cordial for the bar that I worked at on Call Lane. It was always handy to stock up in case anyone wanted a White Russian, but really it was mostly to supply my need for coffee. Also, there is nothing quite as refreshing as elderflower cordial and lemonade. Seriously, it used to be my favourite drink. I love the smell when you walk in to this shop. It's not exclusive, it's that same smell most organic shops have, but it is lovely. The smell of good. Only goodness. Nothing in here can really be bad for you. At least, that's what we can believe until we learn otherwise! Within you will find, as well as hoards of organic foods, all sorts of enviro-friendly cosmetics, cleaning products (for you and your clothes) and much more. It errs on the expensive side if you wanted to do your weekly shop here, but it is sure worth buying that elderflower cordial. Yum!

Whilst the surroundings of the arcade may have faded during the 21 years that the cafe has been in business, the honesty and wholesome quality of the food remains consistent. I have frequented Roots and Fruits on many occasions, usually on an overcast day, accompanied with a good book. It is the perfect place to lose yourself for a couple of hours, away from the frenetic speed of the city centre. Although the decor has aged slightly, this somehow adds character to the ambiance. Their rich, flavourful soups are perfect on a gloomy day. My favourite dish from the cafe is the falafel kebab, served warm with salad, raita and pitta breads, it is absolutely delicious. After eating, I often wile away the rest of the afternoon with a Darjeeling tea and a moist slice of cake. Who says procrastination has to be dull. A well-used haunt for dedicated vegetarians and fans of meat-free cooking, long may Roots and Fruits continue.

It wasn't IDEAL sitting outside, but actually turned out to be quite nice as loads of people were walking past in fancy dress (we visited on Halloween) so got some really interesting people watching in! The waiter came over and took our order (after we'd deliberated for ages) I had the mandarin jigger and others ordered hot drinks etc. Everything was bought quickly and efficiently, our waiter was so lovely when we took ages to decide our food too! I eventually decided on the nachos, complete with salsa, coconut sour cream (!!!!) and jalepenos! All of it was amazing and so tasty!! I definitely didn't expect the coconut sour cream (vegan of course) to taste so good but it was great! The vegan cheese on top was also great and generally really tasty while also feeling you were being (quite) healthy! After much more deliberation we chose the chocolate cheesecake (all vegan) with a desiccated coconut base- different but very delicious! I have to give this place 5 stars, its ethical, friendly and everything I aspire to in life- really makes you think twice about what you're eating and how you're eating it! They've been open a wee while now, and so my visit came on a rather busy Tuesday lunch time, to meet a friend. Luckily I bagged a table before the place filled out! I'd call this a proper hidden gem, as it's elusive in plain sight, being right in the centre and yet you'd only know about it if you're either eagle eyed or have friends who share such secrets. (Yelpers shared this spot for me, naturally!) If you're walking down one of the cobbled alley ways, specifically the one housing City Varieties and The White Swan, then you'll be right on the door step of this delightful veggie and vegan cafe. Don't go into the shop, as I did, take the door on the right, next to it, and ascend the stairs - the reward of delectable loose leaf teas, fresh salads, home made soup and other treats will greet you inside. The place is decorated with positivity, literally, with happy quotes on the walls and table mats. All the staff were jolly, obviously enjoying what they do, and I finally understood that ever so slightly smug feeling I've noticed in healthier friends - man, it does feel good to eat a ton of vegetables, none of which have been battered an deep fried first! I jest, of course, but this is a feel good place in various ways. I had a delicious sandwich, that you'll have to forgive me for forgetting which variety, and a fantastic cup of green tea. Loose leaf, of course, and served with an awesome glass that felt very ergonomic in one's hand, and also pleading that it was designed to keep the liquid hot. (Air between two layers of glass means you don't burn your hand, and retain a piping cuppa. Boom. Science.) It seems, at present, this lovely cafe is still somewhat of a secret. Busy enough to enjoy a full house, but not so busy you couldn't pop in and enjoy their offerings. I was assured that everything they had been served was gluten free but then, oh wait, let me check.......It turns out that the 'chicken' substitute contains gluten and they had just 'assumed' it was gluten free. I suppose it's lucky that coeliac disease isn't a killer like nut allergy etc because there assumptions could have been fatal instead of just very painful.

Yesterday I allowed myself to partake of a banana and chocolate loaf slice, and it was everything I desired, and more. Moist, flavoursome, chocolatey and with added nuts! I also had a few cups of the masala chai tea. Although I've forgotten the name of the tea brand, it was a fantastic cuppa, and perfectly reviving. The seating is varied, and plentiful for such a small space, so if you're lucky you can bag a squishy sofa. However, the plastic pawn seats are just as comfy, so grab a pew and get your thinking cap on. The music is ambient and unobtrusive, so there's no need to worry about loud chart distraction. It's a place to meet friends and catch up, it's a place to disappear into your own thoughts, it's a place to catch up on work poaching the free wifi, it's a place to delight in coffee, cake and tea. I hadn't time to test out the soup or sarnies, but I shall be back soon for more wifi antics and a deeper investigation as to the edibles -having been a fan of Bakery 164's sandwiches I'm sure they will not disappoint. It's such a comfortable place where not only did my latte and flapjack taste great but I could relax in the knowledge that they were ethical (I think). There are some very comfortable sofas (I gave up my chance to sit there as a largish group came in just behind me and I'm a nice, thoughtful guy) and I would very much like to settle down with a latte or two and a book for a long session of me time at some stage in the near future (they even have a bring one, take one book shelf). The thali comes with a lassi, sweet or salt, and I'm glad I went sweet. It was delicious, especially with the fennel seeds. The salt wasn't for me (I tried April K's) but it's worth a punt if you're more adventurous. When our food arrived we were discussing ingredients, and so the chap happily chatted with us about each dish, and what ingredients were used, even giving a detailed description of how things are eaten in India - this I loved. I'm a huge fan of learning about other cultures, foods, practices, so it was great to get a picture painted for us before we set to dine. Even more excitingly, we discovered a few dishes were brand new, though don't ask me which ones as I can't remember! In any case, we felt very special. Each of the dishes were a delight on the taste buds, and exciting in their own rights, as well as mixed together. I am a meat eater, but I barely noticed its absence. I also tried the chai tea, which was magnificent, and the pudding that comes with the thali really deserves a mention. It's super sweet and delectable, but sadly I only had room for half of it! Hansas is an old Leeds institution, and you can tell why it's stood the test of time. 5 minutes out of Leeds centre (although just over the ring road), it's a little bit set apart from most restaurants, but it's totally worth the walk. The menu is varied, although all vegetarian, and everything I've ever tried has been absolutely beautiful. Everything is reasonably priced, and if there's a group of you they do 'banquet meals' which are a great way to try lots of different dishes. My favourite dish by far is the chilli paneer - devilishly hot and full of flavour. We love Hansas so much we had it for Christmas dinner last year. One word of warning - the food tends to be *very* spicy. If you like it a bit milder, it might be worth asking when you order. Or just order a delicious lassi to go with your meal.
