How do you describe a place like this? First it is next to Ikea - that Swedish Monolith of low priced furniture. Ikea is the type of place where you enter and immediately think that this place could change your life for the better. Just buy a couch and set of throw cushions and you could be as happy as a Swede. Dobbies is similar in scope. It reminds you that there is a big world outside of your living room and you have been neglecting it. You should have been in the garden - digging, weeding planting and feeding the birds. Why have you been playing Xbox? Don't you know that your lawn needs feeding? Ikea reminds you how shit your life is - Dobbies tells you how shit your garden is. How can they call this a Garden centre though? Yes, it has plants and all things plants related but it also carries a lot of other stuff. Why sell meat in a Garden Centre, or coffee, or any of this other stuff? In some sense it may be better to call this the gift centre of Dobbies. You would not go here to buy a pound of coffee for your morning cup but you may pick up a bag of expensive specialist coffee for a friend. Same for beers and booze. Dobbies is self contained with a massive building and outside area for larger plants, aggregate and sheds. Pretty impressive and (when I went there) extremely busy. Now I have made my opinions known about Garden Centres (tea rooms where you can buy plants). I also have let folks know where I would prefer that they bought their rose bushes and tomato plants (Erskine). But this Dobbies powerhouse does a very good job and they try to be environmentally friendly from the materials used in the construction to the parking lot outside. Am I a little bit upset when you look at the massive parking lot at Dobbies and the tiny one at Erskine. Yeah a bit. If you travelled a little ways down the Clyde, you could buy your plants and help some folks that need it. Just think about it. No guilt here, just saying. read more

Dobbies never ever disappoints. This is our go to place for a 'special lunch' or day out if we're out and about with my Gran. There's something about garden centres that a certain age of lady just loves and Granny Annie is obsessed with Dobbies! This time though I popped in with my boyfriend, though did get some guilt and phoned my Gran incase she wanted anything. Now the main reason I am always happy to come here is their amazing cafe. The cake cabinet for starters is just amazing. It's one of these places where I chose my cake first then decide what main course I'll have to ensure there's room leftover. Today's cake of choice was an apple and cinnamon scone for me - one of just many a scone selection. It was heavenly. So so fresh and crumbly, an absolute taste sensation. My boyfriend went for a chocolate cookie. Think this sums up the ages we both should be - him a man child and me an OAP. I had a red pepper, pesto and goats cheese foccacia which was so tasty. The sandwiches are really jam packed here and came with a yummy American style slaw and some salted crisps. He got a peri peri chicken ciabatta which he enjoyed but wished he'd went for the pulled pork - saw someone else with it and it looked great!! No trip to Dobbies is complete without a wander round the garden centre and the food hall. There were even more samples there and I think I tried every cake on offer - for the sake of this review obviously. Cannot wait until they have their Christmas display out! Dobbies is ultra cute, its not just any garden centre you know! it reminds you that you dont have to go with your gran to the garden centre infact its ok to go yourself! I love all the cute things they sell right down to there candles! The food hall is top notch and reminds you of a small harrods (ok i might be exagerating but you catch my drift...its posh) I dont even have a garden I stay in a flat but its nice to walk about and spot unusal things for a change and get some nice unusal food! read more

I love a Dobbies that I do. My parents live round the corner from the one in Aberdeen and it's somewhere we frequently visit. I went to the Glasgow branch last week to pick up a table and chairs. I got there just after opening and could not find any staff anywhere, after a slight wait at the front desk for a member from the outdoor department. Once found, I could not have had better customer service, the massive box was carried straight to the checkout, where I paid quickly and was also taken to my car. (The little things like this are always appreciated.) If you need anything garden related, from wellies to shovels to plants to pots, this is your place. It's also got a huge farmer's market/deli with all assortments of everything, not to mention the lovely cafe. The breakfast is excellent value and I am partial to a tray-bake! read more

This Dobbies had a soft opening on January 29th and is "officially" open on February 4th, 2011. My sister-in-law wanted to check this one out and being unemployed, I said was more than happy to tag along, as long as we could throw in a stop at Ikea (which we did). Anywho, this brand spankin' new Dobbies is very bright, shiny, and smells great. It goes on forever and has all manner of items which one would not normally expect to find together under one roof. Locally sourced eggs and vegetables? Check. A watering can in the shape of an elephant? Check. A scarf? A Buddha statue? Greeting cards? Check, check, check. I am unfamiliar with the garden center concept, being an American, but I get it. It's a browser's dream, particularly a browser who likes to garden. There's a sleek cafe with, literally, mounds upon mounds of tempting confections as well as a regularly rotating selection of sandwiches, entrees and soups. The food is actually really nice, and the restaurant is quite comfortable. One can come along, browse the random assortment of wares, and then have a nice long lunch. You probably won't catch me hanging around at Dobbies. However, if perusing garden centers is your thing, this glossy new Dobbies will probably knock your socks off. read more

This place makes me squeal with happiness. Why wouldn't it? They have all things gardening, plus BBQ equipment, clothes, candles, and even a cafe and bakery. I could spend hours in this shop just wandering about the isles but I'm always drawn straight away to their food section (duh). Sophie K and I stopped in here one afternoon just before closing time, because she had never been and I wanted to introduce her to a source of happiness for me. I think I've made a fan out of here because we've since been back for another visit with more time to look around before closing. In our past lives, we've both had fish tanks in our homes, so we get a kick out of their live fish section and reminisce about what fish we had and which one's we wouldn't mind having again. They also have a huge plant section where you can buy all sorts of plants for your garden, or in my case, balcony. My guy and I have huge dreams about things we want to grow, but with the weather in Scotland and a lot of plans needing loads of sunlight, I'd much rather leave them for people with huge yards and keep our balcony for bbqs and outdoor furniture. The food section here at Dobbies is amazing. They have foods from all over the world including a selection of affordable American treats. My guy and I bought some cheddar cheese Synders pretzels- something he has fallen in love with since I introduced them to him. He's going to be in for a treat when we're in America with all the other delicious things I'm going to introduce to him! All in all, this is your one stop shop for all things garden/home. Give yourself some time here as there is a lot to look at, but it's time well spent in my opinion. read more

Well, I said, what about, Breakfast at Dobbies...well, I didn't but my friend suggested it & I thought she must've been out of her tiny mind. DOBBIES DON'T DO BREAKFAST...do they? Aye, turns out they do & a mighty breakfast it is indeed. We went on a Saturday morning and I was surprised how busy the place was. Clearly I am not one of the 'in the know' Dobbies crew who regularly 'chill' in Dobbies on a Saturday morning; hanging with the hydrangeas, relaxing with the relish (homemade) or chilling with the chervil. I've been to Dobbies before but purely for coffee & cake and a wee potter about the farm shop, I honestly didn't ken they had a breakfast menu. Served from 9 - 11:30am they had 3 options on their breakfast menu ~ Hot rolls with 2 fillings for £2.29, Traditional Breakfast with 7 items & toast for £3.49 or a Bigger Breakfast with 10 items & toast for £4.49. I went for the Traditional Breakfast & choices included: Fried/scrambled eggs, bacon, link/square/veggie sausage, black pudding, potato scone, hash brown, mushrooms, beans & tomatoes. I thought this was a really great choice of foods and you also get white or brown toast included in the price. Brilliant. Everything was cooked perfectly (when it comes to fried eggs I like them runny so I was pleased they were so) and I really enjoyed every bite. They also have a good selection of coffees & teas too. I went for a large filter coffee (£2.30) which I felt was nice but maybe a wee bit steep considering their Lattes/Cappuccino's are only 35p more. It wasn't very hot either & I didn't mind too much but I know some people might. You can help yourself to water (with lemon or orange slices too ~ nice touch) and also there were other savoury food options should you not want a cooked breakfast. They also had their usual cakes which all looked delicious but rather than buy one & sit in one of my friends (a Dobbies regular; she's one of the D-Crew, dawg!) said it's much cheaper to buy one (or 5) to take away from a counter just around the corner from the restaurant counter...good tip as I would have probably just picked one up from the self-serve restaurant counter & then asked for a box to take it home, which I have done in the past. So I got a Melting Moments biscuit for 79p and a jam & cream scone for £1.49 ~ I was well chuffed. Only thing was by the time I got home the cream on my scone had all but melted, so beware as it's not a thick cream; more like a thicker scooshy cream. Also they were particularly stingy with the jam too but what little I did taste was very nice. Apart from the restaurant this Dobbies is a pretty good-sized garden centre and has the usual farm shop too but I noticed the one here isn't as big or offer as much stuff as the one in Milngavie. It still has a good range of stuff though. I especially like their Kilner & Sistema ranges. The kitchenware and foods alone make Dobbies a good place to visit; not having a garden people may wonder why I ever visit a garden centre but for the shop & cafe alone it's a great place to come & peruse, especially for gifts/something a bit different. Would I come back here again? Most definitely. This place is quite easy to get whether you drive or not as the buses to Braehead all pass by & stop near here. There are also cycle paths all along here too should you fancy trying to bike home with a belly full of cake & a garden hoe hoe hoe on your back. read more

It can be a bit pricey, but the food is good and well worth it. The farm shop is brilliant. Even though I don't have a garden I'll buy some indoor plants and candles and whatnot form here. So glad it opened, the other ones are all too far away from me! read more

My local garden centre, took my mum for a bite to eat. Disappointed. We had 2 premium baked potatoes which were good the salad to accompany was dry and lifeless, the staff levels at checkout were a joke a long bottleneck built up by the time i got through and went back for my latte the food was cold, the cakes looked great but flattered to deceive the individual banoffee pies were piled high with cream the toffee was that new (so thin you can see through it) type and the bananas were cut so thin i have never seen transparent banana slices before today. With their own in house bakery they should be ashamed. All in all poor service, nice baked potato and excellent latte mediocre salad and cakes. 3/10 read more
