I'll NEVER go to DODGE CITY VET again
** This is not just another unsatisfied customer complaint about Dodge City Vet, this was complete neglect and lack of care by Scott Smith!!**
I wish you I could give ZERO stars. Gunner got out early Tuesday morning and was hit by a car. I was at Dodge City when the doors opened (I was told they had room for an emergency visit right then) the Vet came in an hour later and somewhat examined Gunner, TWICE! I pointed out the very obvious gaping hole in his FOOT where the bone and tendons were fully exposed BOTH times. He ordered xrays and came back in to tell me hes very surprised that the xray showed nothing broken. (Very confused, I question how that is was possible the foot was literally not intact, is it maybe dislocated?) His response was "oh well we xrayed the hip and upper leg, but I see now the foot is very swollen (see pics below that were taken IN DODGE CITY VET EXAM ROOM and tell me how anyone with ANY quality of vision could miss it after examining him TWICE) after the 3rd time he FINALLY looks at the hole in his leg and says "yea..that right there is most likely the problem" "I'm going to go ahead and take him back to be sedated so he so he will not be in pain and we will do the xray of the foot then and see what needs to be done, regardless the wound needs to be closed so we will go ahead and do it all at once while hes sedated"
----5 1/2 HOURS LATER my mom calls to check on him and they first tell us hes in surgery...then they tell us he has not been seen yet..?HUH? Was there another emergency that came up? No. I asked what the results of the xray were? No xray done. I asked if pain meds were given until he could be seen? She said "No, he was wagging his tail so hes fine he didn't need it.. I asked if the wound was at least cleaned and antibiotics were started until he can be seen?..NOPE, THEY DID NOT EVEN CLEANSE & REMOVE DEBRIS , no pain management (which they asked if I wanted and I said YES ASAP but it still wasnt given) and no antibiotics given.
So I assume most reading this can guess the one thing from the start I was worried about the most is even more of a fear now...INFECTION!!
I completely understand one vet cant do multiple surgeries, I understand not every pet cant be immediately seen, but I also understand some of his needs to prevent infection could have been done by a tech and the wound could have at least been cleaned before starting a denatling cleaning on another dog. I could have been notified that he would not be seen until the evening instead of letting me think the he was currently being treated. I could have been given an option to seek out to my personal vet, but I wasnt.
I immediately removed him from Dodge City and brought him to Hope Vet. Literally 30 seconds after walking in the door he was brought back and sedated, xrays were done, and wound was being cleaned (which was very dirty). The vet was speechless this wasn't addressed immediately at Dodge City and stated "this is most definitely critical and I could see that the second he came through the door".
The damage was so bad and the wound went uncleansed and exposed for so long that infection was setting in. His WBC was through the roof, bone fragment floating everywhere, ligament and tendons torn. She sent us to a specialist for a second opinion due to fear of infection spreading and the level of damage to the break. An hour drive to Mandeville and a quote of almost $4000 right off top was given (if tended to properly TWELVE hours ago at this point at Dodge City this could have been MUCH LOWER and a less extensive treatment plan) this facility was amazing, super friendly, and very informative. Its was top of line equipment offered but unfortunately that comes with a hefty price and could still be a risky recovery. After we denied their treatment plan the vet there got in touch with Hope vet and the two of then worked together to give us another option that was best for his health.
The end result was amputation. An hour after closing last night, the vet at Hope Vet offered to meet me back at her office to bring Gunner in. She started him on meds, antibiotics, and splint the leg. THEN she adjusted her schedule to come in early before opening to do his surgery. TWO HOURS after closing the vet tech without hesitation stayed even longer so my brother and his son could come see their Gunner man before he has his leg amputated. Tears were cried, hearts were broken, Gunner spent over 14 hours being moved from 5 different locations, sat 6 hours unattended and untreated at Dodge City, and moved in and out the vehicle multiple times in pain. Thank you Hope Vet for going above and beyond and making the catastrophe at Dodge City worth leading us to you for impressive and greatly appreciated over the top care!! read more
