I finally popped my Prince Charles cherry and went to see 'The Room' last Friday night. I can see…read moremyself falling in love with this place. The Prince Charles is well known for it's collection of indie movies, while it shows some new releases, they're normally the more unusual choices over the big block busters shown around the corner on the Square. It's true draw, however, comes from their cult movie nights. For example, 'The Room', where else could you see that in London, let alone be allowed to throw spoons at the screen? They also have double bills, marathon screenings and sing-a-long-a movies! I can't wait to see Rocky Horror at Halloween! And they serve beer! Some of the marathons appartently do a beer & pizza night, but I haven't experienced that yet... It was only my first time but I'll be sure to update you when I've been a few more times.

Sink back into one of the super-comfy seats facing their big screen and it's like stepping back into a golden age of cinema. The rows of seats slant up towards the screen rather than down towards it. This means the screen towers above you, and, looking along the tops of the seats towards the screen as you do, makes it a feel like more of a communal experience. The second screen is more modest, but given a hint of fun and class by the stars-at-night lighting on the ceiling and the Frank Sinatra soundtrack playing before the film starts. The films shown are those at the end of their run elsewhere in London, but also older classics and cinema curiosities too such as 'so-terrible-it's-a-cult-film' Birdemic. Prices are reasonably cheap, particularly if you buy the £10 annual membership: unlike the other independent cinemas in London (Curzon, Cine Lumiere, ICA, BFI) whose discount-securing membership schemes are seemingly calculated to pay off only after seeing 20 odd films, the £2.50-£4 discounts earned by £10 Prince Charles cinema membership means that membership pays off almost immediately. Kudos. It also hosts plenty of events for the more dedicated film lover: midnight-crossing triple and quadruple bills (often trilogies or quadrilogies), singalongs and even quote-a-longs, in turn giving you a glimpse into the sub-culture of film fandom. With its old-school feel, honest pricing and fun celebration of all aspects of cinema, it almost doesn't come as a surprise that directing legends of independent cinema Quentin Tarantino, Kevin Smith and Nicolas Winding Refn have gone out of their way to support the Prince Charles' existence and urge cinema fans to do likewise. I was lucky enough to catch a memorable post-'Red State' Q&A there with Kevin Smith and his passion, humour, hilarious story-telling and honesty were all there to see. Cinema or no cinema, this is one of London's gems in its own right.

One of the oldest and first cinema's to show film in London. I actually went to see a double bill of Hitchock. They seem to have a few good arthouse or classic double bills which breaks the mould. Lovely seats and setting. Screen not huge so anywhere from rows 3-10 I reckon are best. Don't go too far back if eyesight is not good. Because of the grand exterior and interior it gets a high mark. Coffee nothing to shout about but saw people getting wine but must say they need more seats around foyer as no where to sit behind 15 people I reckon. That they can improve on.

Before the days of TV, the cinema would show newsreels during World War Two, bringing news to Londoners whose loved ones were away fighting in the war. Owned by the University of Westminster, right next to the university near Oxford Circus. A 119 year old building, it was used by the university as lectures hall for the past 30 years, and has recently been rebuilt in an art-deco style and re-opened to the public showing independent and art house films, a place for film events, lectures and workshops. More suited to lectures, the seating is not that comfortable to watch a film, but the bar area is nice and spacious with a great selection of drinks around the world, to meet before or after a film.

I didn't understand why so many seats were empty right before the movie was going to begin, even though I saw them taken on the computer. There are several advertisements before the previews, so by the time the movie began, 26min. had already elapsed. - Minus 1 star for people coming on late cuz they can't see and end up sometimes in your way. The refreshment area was pretty standard- ice cream, candy, popcorn, wine, etc.

They have street performers doing various magic tricks nearby which really increases the crowds. The theater itself is spacious and has couches in the waiting area. Concessions aren't marked up like in the USA - everything in London is equally expensive :). I want to see Raid 2. The screen is decent sized, but the theater access is strange with several stairs going down and then up again. Like cinemas in Asia, they have assigned seating but you can switch if the theater isn't too crowded. Seats are comfortable, and are the rocking type. The other difference from USA theaters is that they show more commercials than trailers - that's okay since I find many UK commercials actually funny. BTW - Raid 2 is an excellent action flick that is pure adrenalin rush. A must for all martial arts fans. The fight scenes were intense and the violence over the top (makes Kill Bill look tame). I hope it does well in the USA - it left me speechless and many audience members here gasped at the intensity.
