I was a patient of Dr. Dolhun's for 6 years (left because of a move). My health situation is weird and complex, and he helped with some strange requests. As an example: Because my condition has no cure, but there's constant research happening about it, I read a study about enteroviruses where patients required a sort of obscure blood test. I asked for Dr. Dolhun's help in getting it, and he figured out a way to get it done. Dr. Dolhun's service is unlike anything I've ever experienced before. I'm an athlete who doesn't visit a doctor's office unless it's for an annual checkup but five years ago, my life and health drastically changed. I experienced gastrointestinal problems, which resulted in endless amounts of prescription drugs, being passed off to different doctors and waiting months to see any kind of specialist. A friend knew what I was dealing with and gave me the gift of referring me to Dr. Dolhun. His attentiveness, care and methodology helped me immensely and continues to help me today. In early 2021, I was referred to Dr. D by another physician. I was scheduled for a major surgery and unbeknownst to me, I had some pre-existing health issues. I had been with One Medical and equivalents -- for a few years-- and these issues were either undetected or I was led to believe they didn't warrant too much attention. The surgeon said they were serious enough, she would postpone the surgery until they were addressed. She said seeing Dr. D was an absolute must. (Shoutout to Dr. Carolyn Chang, see review). I am 61 years old, have seen a few docs in my time, and Dr. D was a first time experience for me. I have never been so thoroughly listened to, examined or treated. I found myself sharing highly personal things (uncharacteristic of me). He has that way about him -- you are the single most important entity on the planet in that moment with him. Flash forward to now: after the Feb 2021 surgery, my health literally fell apart -- starting with spinal fusion surgery in late March 2021 (huge shoutout to Golden Gate Spine and Dr. Kim -- see reviews). A 9 time marathoner, snowboarder, cyclist, etc... never had health issues -- and now? My health is falling apart. I am going back to Dr. D and officiating becoming his patient. I've been through the ringer with the One Medicals of the world-- which is part of the reason I have issues that never should have progressed. I need a Dr. who actually gives a damn, a Dr who will be my partner in managing my health. As corny as it may sound, I need a Dr who cares. And that's what 3 different physicians told me about him, among other high praises -- he cares -- he actually really deeply cares. I spoke with Dr. Dolhun directly & told him I was in terrible pain, had been for weeks, and urgently needed medical attention. He asked if I was aware that his was a "concierge" practice, i.e., he was very expensive & didn't accept insurance. I am new to the city and came down with a pretty bad cold.... :/ I yelped and came across Dr. Dolhun's page. I'm always nervous about visiting dr's, but he set the tone as soon as I made my first call. He was quick to answer and made an appointment for me that day. Parking...street or in building-$2.00 every 20minutes. Office...the front desk greeted me as soon as I walked in, took my information and I only waited a few minutes until the Dr. was ready to see me. "As my on-call general physician, Dr. D has literally saved my life with his high-touch, high-response care. A few Thanksgivings ago, I was feeling ill. I probably wouldn't have done anything about it, but knowing that Dr. D was on-call to help, I dropped him an e-mail. Even over the holiday, he responded within two hours. It turned out I had walking pneumonia, and as he said, if I hadn't come to him for care "20 hours more and you would have been hospitalized; 40 hours and you would have been dead." I was home alone that week, and in my delirium I'm sure I would not have thought to call an ambulance. Dr. Pena-Dolhun is very thorough and thoughtful. I still follow his recommendations and find that on the the lists of family care physicians in the City, he is among the best. Yet, keep in mind that like all doctors and medical centers these days, you need to find out in advance if your health care provider will cover his fees. Patients must pay for each visit and sign an agreement of payment before scheduling an appointment. At my last appointment with Dr. Pena-Dolhun his office was billing insurance as a non-subscriber. That means that you the patient must pay out of network rates. Most health insurance carriers like Blue Shield will not give patients the best rate if they select a doctor outside of their subscriber network. Patients should be able to go to the doctor of their choice. Yet unfortunately as it is now, even the PPO level of health insurance coverage puts limits on what they cover and discourage patients from going to a doctor out of their network. This is why Dr. Pena-Dolhun's office told me about Health Savings Account Plans. HSA's are becoming more common now and I hope the idea improves, especially as more and more people are paying for health services out of pocket these days. My previous experience with the medical system was probably like yours- sit in a waiting room for ages filled with sick people (great place to pick up a new ailment) for a Dr that was always late and when I finally made it in to the exam room I would sit around for another exorbitant amount of time for the Dr to come in and then it would be 5 minute exam conveying information that already had found on webmd. Dr Dolhun is different. I've been blown away by level of service, communication and thoughtfulness. I appreciate the detailed yet understandable explanations he provides and it's incredibly cool that he follows up to see how your'e doing. Finally, I love the fact that you can email him a question and he'll get back to you without requiring you to come in for a visit. I've always hated going for a visit to the doctor because the experience is almost universally awful. First you have to wait in an uncomfortable waiting room for 30 minutes past your appointment time if you're lucky, an hour if you're not. Then you're put into an exam room, and told that the doctor will be right with you, but you end up waiting another 20 or 30 minutes. Then a nurse comes in to check vitals and leaves you alone again. Finally, you get to see the doctor for 2 minutes who does a hasty job at everything, never looks you in the eye, and doesn't bother to explain what's wrong with you because he figures you won't understand. As a patient of Dr. Dolhun's, I'm pleased to report that my experience couldn't be farther from the above description. Appointments start on time, I'm never left alone, and Dr. Dolhun spends quality time (an hour and a half with me on my first visit) with his patients. He's respectful, empathetic, reassuring, and funny -- overall a delight to be around. He takes very great care to explain his diognoses and presents you with several options on how to address them. He draws blood and administers shots himself. He calls you to review test results and to answer questions. He e-mails with his patients. My parents recommended I give him a call and his great assistant got me in that same afternoon (thank you andrew!) so i went home feeling much better. Dr. Dolhun is the best doctor you'll ever encounter. He's compassionate, a great listener, incredibly responsive (calls back within the hour), brilliant (he worked at the Mayo Clinic and often collaborates with his colleagues there). He's also an committed member of Doctors Without Borders and often is found treating patients during disasters such as Haiti, and he brings that same compassion to his patients locally. Just when we thought the medical profession couldn't be saved, we met Dr. Dolhun and he has exceeded our high expectations. For example, our son is extremely afraid of needles and so Dr Dolhun came to our house to draw his blood so he could be in the comfort his own room. I've been seeing Dr. Dolhun for years as my primary care physician, and was always extremely satisfied with the care he provides. Annual physicals were always very thorough and never felt rushed. Dr. Dolhun was always very responsive via email if I had any questions. And I was always able to get seen quickly if anything urgent came up. He's out of network for all insurers, but I readily paid out of pocket for his services because it was worth it to get such great care. I called today to schedule my annual physical and learned that as of Jan 1 2017 the office has switched to a membership-only model. There are two tiers, with the lower cost tier starting at $6,000 per year. When paying per visit, I was only spending an average of $1,000 - $1,500 per year. I just don't need to see the doctor often enough for membership to make sense for me. I understand that Dr. Dolhun has a business to run, and needs to make these types of decisions to maintain the viability of his practice, but it's still incredibly disappointing to have to find a new provider. A postcard or a letter to existing patients before the switch would have been a nice, so I would have known to start looking for a new doctor several months ago. If I had the extra disposable income, or had more frequent medical needs, I wouldn't hesitate to go back to Dr. Dolhun. It's unfortunate that only the very wealthy can now afford the level of care he provides, which is the standard that all doctors should be measured against. read more
