Dr Cubba is a excellent primary care physician. He can be quite serious when discussing health issues and I appreciate how comprehensive he is when reviewing age related health issues. I am very meticulous and I research most of my medications. By the time I get around to talking to Dr Cubba, he has usually already researched potential side effects. I can send him a message asking for a time to discuss my medications and when we talk Dr Cubba is prepared to discuss the pros and cons of my current regimen and he has some suggestions oh how to move forward. The staff members at Dr. Cubba's office were super friendly and efficient. As others have noted, the office environment itself is fairly dreary, but that's not the most important consideration, of course. Unfortunately, my experiences with Dr. Cubba himself were very negative for me. I understand he is well-regarded as a knowledgeable and competent doctor, and I don't have any reason to doubt that. But medical care is a highly personal experience for the patient, with attendant fears, questions, and personal decisions. It was in the failure to connect with Dr. Cubba on this hybrid professional/personal level that my experience with him became very negative. My perception was that he just wasn't interested in or was annoyed by what I had to say and my concerns. I'm not sure how others have communicated and worked effectively with him as patients, but it didn't work out for me. read more

Both my partner and I are seeing Dr Cubba at his practice at the Davies campus in the Castro. He actually came highly recommended by our neighbor, who is a pharmacist at another Sutter campus. What we like about Dr Cubba is that he's friendly, but not to the all-American-smile extend, if you know what I mean. He's also very thorough in his examination and will inform you about everything that he does. We also like that he is money-smart, meaning that he will suggest to us to not necessarily have all tests done at the in-house facility, as they ain't the cheapest kid on the block. So, when we need blood samples etc, we go to other labs and have them fax results over to Dr. Cubba's office. I called his office and his staff was rude. I just had a question for the Doctor they refused to help me. I thought Doctors were suppose to help people? Their phone computer voice as I was on hold, before the phone was answered by his staff, asked me to leave a review after they hung up the phone but they knew my review would be bad so they did not hang up the phone, I waited for a long time for them to hang up, but they never did. read more

Dr. Cubba is nice and professional overall, but he didn't seem to care about my insurance issues. During a recent physical, I told him that my insurance would cover lab tests 100% if they were done in his office building, but he said for a small out-of-pocket expense, I could go down the street to Stanford labs and have the work done more quickly. I guess I should have asked what "small expense" would be - as I received bills for almost $300. When I told him about this on a return visit to his office, he basically said "oh, $300 is not so much." Says who? Now, I don't expect doctors to know everything about every insurance plan out there, but I do expect a some modicum of compassion when it comes to out-of-pocket expenses - not a brush off. read more

I never had any doubts about his competency as a doctor, but he never gave me the impression that he cared at all about me as a patient. Well, I was a semi-new patient, I think I had visited twice. I had seen Jason P. Kauffman, DO, who was a pleasure. This review does not include him. Then I left my full-time job to become a full-time contractor for a corporation, meaning I would need individual insurance. I was previously on a group plan with Anthem, so I called and had them switch me to an individual plan. They explained that under the new health care laws I only had one plan option. Easy enough, so I signed up. When I got to Cubba Medical Group for my next appointment, I was told they didn't accept my plan. WTF? So, Cubba came out to explain to me that Anthem is forcing their clients onto this new plan that pushes more of the costs onto the doctors, and so he is protesting by not accepting these plans. When I seemed shocked, he asked me "Do you expect me to take a 40% pay cut?" Well, Dr. Cubba, yes. Yes I do. Being a doctor should be about helping people, not just making money. BTW, last I checked, doctor's don't have to worry about making their mortgage or BMW payments. I'm glad this happened, because I don't want to put my personal health in the hands of someone who ultimately doesn't care about me. All other qualities that a doctor could be evaluated on are trumped by this one thing - care for the patient. 1 star. read more

Dr. Cubba is an extremely thorough, open minded, intelligent, and compassionate doctor. I've seen him through sports injuries, kidney disease, chronic sinusitis, and many other health issues. He really thinks things through and is always resonsive to any questions or concerns. Dr. Cubba helped me quit smoking...he even let me borrow a book about quitting smoking. AND, when Dr. Cubba is not available, Nais Raulet, the PA-C will see me. I appreciate how carefully he explains his assessment of my problem and prescribes treatment in incremental steps to reach a final diagnosis. It's time to update my review. I've been a patient of Dr. Cubba's for several years. Recently he helped me through some serious health issues with his usual kind, compassionate manner. He continues to be the best Dr. I've ever had. In addition both of his PA-C's, Nais Raulet and Bridgette Stringer are kind compassionate and thorough. I know when Dr. Cubba is unavailable it's possible for me to receive top rate medical care. Dr. Cubba's office is also one of the few medical practitioners that doesn't give us grief about seeing myself and my husband together. We're more comfortable dealing with medical issues together. Many other practitioners have given us grief about small exam rooms, privacy (come on! he's my husband) etc. Not so in this office. I think Dr. Cubba actually prefers seeing us together. I also have to give prop's to his front desk staff. Shea and Tanisha are both very kind, helpful and always have a happy demeanor. I have never been treated in a hurried or dismissive manner here, Nais is great and the office staff is capable of thinking outside of their routine. I have developed a sincere trust in his judgement and that he truly has my well-being at heart. I have been extremely lucky when it comes to the care of my AIDS, and it's cluster of symptoms/manifestations. First, I was in the care of Dr. Wally Krampf, now retired, for 16 years. And now I have been in Dr. Cubba's care for the last 12 years. For those of you who knew Wally, you understand what I am saying. But truly, they are each incomparable. I have, and would recommend him to anyone who was looking for an Internist/Primary Care Doctor. I am very lucky to say I was one of Dr. Cubba's first patients when he came to SF 11 years ago. He is caring, smart (sterling MD credentials) and most importantly, he's non-judgmental. I have been to him for many embarrassing medical problems (boys, you know what I'm talking about), and he has never been judgmental nor lecture-y like a parent. His office frequently squeezes me in when I have something urgent. I don't waste his time and he doesn't waste my time, however, when I really needed it, he always gave me all the time necessary for a thorough visit including explanations that were complex. At first doctor Cubba struck me as being uncaring and even rude. Turns out he is just socially awkward. He is a very good doctor, so who cares if he is socially awkward? Dr. Cubba took over the practice of an older practitioner, Dr. Drennan, who retired in March, 2006. It has been a bit of an adjustment, getting used to a doctor 30 years younger than I am (instead of one who was my own age), but I must say the Dr. C has filled Dr. D's shoes admirably. He is warm, friendly, attentive and professional. I admire his ability to overcome the shyness, reticence, modesty, etc., of his predecessor's patients - it can't be the easiest thing in the world to take over from a seasoned professional. Both my partner and I have Dr Cubba as our primary care doctor. I would say he is easily the MOST thorough doctor I have ever visited. During my first appointment with him, an annual check-up after moving over from Kaiser, there was nothing he failed to check. After the assembly line that is Kaiser it was truly eye-opening. His "bed-side" manner is certainly professional but not overly chummy. I felt he was paying attention to his work. Having read the comments of other posters about lack of concern about insurance issues I would say that is a valid issue. I'm sure there were less expensive places I could have gotten some of my outside procedures done. Don't assume anything on this point. It's best to ask questions. That's my experience. I was a patient of Dr. Cubba's predecessor, Dr. Drennan. I asked to be transferred to this man who I found to be totally different, and closer to my expectations for a personal doctor. On 2/21/09 I visited my primary care physician Dr Louis Cubba for my Annual Wellness Exam. It had been scheduled six weeks too early by his office after I trusted them to properly notify me when Medicare would pay for it. I suffer from memory problems for which the doctor prescribed Donepezal. I was weighed and my temperature & blood pressure were taken by his assistant. After discussing my memory issues for a very short time, Dr Cubba left without my undressing or him even touching me. I left in a fog forgetting what I was there for! I did not have my Annual Wellness Exam as I expected. Medicare subsequently denied payment for this visit because it had not been one year since my last wellness exam. After many, many inquiries & complaints to Sutter Health & Dr Cubba regarding this situation, Sutter Health at long last on 5/7/19 finally credited me the $263 charge for the exam I did not receive. I may be wrong, but it appears to me on the Medicare site that Dr Cubba was paid the $263 anyway! This situation has caused me to seek another primary care physician. I needed a PCP when moving to SF in 2008, and a colleague recommended Dr. Cubba. I have few health issues - just needed to have regular physicals and occasional help when sick - and he was generally helpful, thoughtful and patient. I think he deals with patients with far more serious conditions than anything I presented to him, but he never led me to feel unimportant. His manner may, at times, seem distant, but I think he has a wry, dry humor lurking under the surface. read more
