Recently while traveling from Myerstown to Lebanon in pursuit of all things thrift we drove past…read morethis store in the city. Anyone that knows me knows I can't just do a drive by and told hubby we HAD to stop. Little did I know (and since we don't know the area) that getting back to it after we passed it would be a challenge. One way roads and road blocks, alleyways, and vacant lots with no direct exit points to the alley behind it made hubby very frustrated. The location in the urban spawl of Lebanon wasn't the greatest either so I had my fingers crossed that it was worth all the effort it took to get there. Moral of story: set your gps - don't pass it! It's a mess trying to go back! They had a graveled, run down lot to the side of the building that housed several cars. There were a few rugged (possibly homeless?) folks smoking and standing around the loading area. Not sure if they worked there or were going thru incoming donations. The place overall had a very concerning exterior, run down, and didn't feel very secure. However with hubby in tow, and being that it was daylight we ventured inside. If you come in thru the lot you enter on a lower level and into a small vestibule of sorts. From there you can proceed to walk to a larger room with small furniture pieces, books, home items, toys, pet supplies etc. This space is VERY narrow and congested. Social distancing is impossible, as is walking past someone in one of the rows. Also it has a strong, foul odor. I couldn't wait to wrestle my way to the stairs in hope that the upper level would be much better. Lighting upstairs was brighter and it did have a more open feel. The store consists of a series of rooms, each one housing a different department. There was a vintage clothing area, where the majority of items were not vintage (unless you consider early 2000's vintage) but there were a few older, stained pieces. However conditions weren't the greatest and although the smell improved, that strange odor was still present. I browsed through some of the other departments but wasn't impressed with anything. Most of the clothing was smashed together on overflowing tight racks and it was hard to really get in there and move pieces around. Quality wasn't great either. The front room where the cashier is located has knick knacks and their "better" inventory of glass and such. Prices ranged from cheap to expensive. If I had to say something positive I will say the middle room containing glassware and kitchen items was probably the best. The shelves were spaced out and prices were fair. If you're looking for vintage dishes or glasses this is your spot. They also had a huge selection of used yarns but prices were higher than other area thrift stores for the same type. Also I do like that this thrift's proceeds benefit the Humane League, an organization I believe in. Both of us were ready to get out of this place and I don't see myself returning. I swear that whatever that smell was got stuck to us. I could faintly smell it on me the rest of the day. WORTH MENTIONING: Hubby asked to use the rest room and was told a firm no. So make sure you "go" before you go. NOT stroller or kid friendly. Items downstairs are much lower priced than upper. Wouldn't shop here alone after dark.

Surplus Outlet is an outlet grocery store and you need to fully understand that when entering…read more There are potential deals here, but you have to know your prices and watch your expiration dates. Store is located just outside of Northumberland on Route 11, immediately next to the American Legion. Parking lot can get tight if the store is busy and it's built on a downhill slope, so unattended shopping carts can roll away. What will you find product wise? A decent fresh fruit/vegetable section. Frozen food section with a lot of discontinued products. Tons of canned good including bulk #10 cans. This location off season sells various fountain fireworks. They also have small kids toy selection. Compared to the Berwick store, this one feels like it has less stock in general. Why I knock a few stars off is you need to check expiration dates on EVERYTHING. No exceptions and at this store they are less well marked on items like cereal. Toiletries and other general pharmacy items are not competitively priced. Paper products have about the same quality as generic items at Dollar General (not great.) Overall, I like Surplus Outlet, and it's worth stopping in to see what they have.

The store is spacious for a discount grocer and had a large section of beauty and health products, more so than others. Many were damaged packaging or expired but that's to be expected. What I didn't expect was such a large and impressive freezer and produce section. Had I had more room in our travel trailer camper I would have bought a ton more! Prices were low and the selection was very broad and fully stocked. Ditto for the produce which looked to be in very good condition and not "seconds". Since discount grocers tend to carry discontinued products I did find several items I'll probably never find again, but at least I enjoyed them once! The staff on the floor was also helpful in directing me to the dept I was looking for. The cashier however had the personality of a slug, and when hubby and I tried to engage in conversation with her she made eye contact but no response. Four stars because although they had a cart wipe station the wipes were completely dried out. A sign at the door insisted there would be no entry unless masked. However a big family with a ton of kids (all touching stuff and a muck around the store) ignored the mask rule and were allowed entry. Also when I tried to go back Sunday on our way home to stock up they were closed. No Sunday hours is a huge let down.
