Subject: Concerns Regarding the Use of Facial recognition and Decision to Withhold Business
I am writing to you as a former customer to express my deep concern about the facial recognition surveillance system currently in use at your store which I observed during my recent visit.
Noticing that the system captures the images of customers before they even enter the store was unsettling. I was not provided with any notice or opportunity to consent to the collection of my biometric data. Under the British Columbia's Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA), facial biometric information is classified as highly sensitive, and its collection requires the express, opt-in consent of individuals. I did not, and would not, provide such consent for this intrusive surveillance.
My personal privacy is a value I take seriously. Because your store has chosen to implement a technology that I consider a significant invasion of privacy, I have made the decision to take my business elsewhere. I will be patronizing local businesses that respect their customers' personal information and privacy rights.
I hope you will forward this feedback to your corporate headquarters. Customers trust is a valuable asset, and policies that erode the trust can have a lasting impact on your business. read more
