We wanted a small bite and this was the perfect place for it. We ordered a ham and cheese and a mozzarella and tomato "tostas". Later, we shared a cup of stracciatella gelato, a decidedly European flavor. The gelato was most excellent, highly recommend. The tostas are a bit plain, no condiments - literally bread with stated ingredients. Toasting it makes the sandwiches much better. One energetic man expeditiously handled the crowd. He did the best he can.

Elvas has a series of forts, which comprise a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is now an open air…read moremuseum that is ver well preserved and dog friendly. It also appeared to be a popular sport for locals because of jogging and hiking trails near by. The fort itself has a series of rooms, some of which have murals. There was also a room for an art exhibition that was themed for the Christmas holidays. This was the best fort that we were able to visit (some of the forts are not accessible to visitors)

Star shaped and full of history. You can peruse the fort, the many rooms that comprise the fort, the officers houses, the land of the fort, the governors house, and you can walk the moat around the fort. Just when you think you have seen it all, think you have been in this room...you haven't. Go up to the top...all the way up for the most spectacular views of the surrounding city. This is the highlight of Elvas!

Not the biggest Continente. But then, Elvas is not the biggest town. It seems satisfactory for a…read moretown that size, though the Continente is not really up to the standards of the Jumbo, for instance, and shops like Pingo Doce, have options (single portions of some items) that are not found at Continente. Let's face it, I just don't like the Continente as well as some of the other big stores. But, in Elvas, where it's really the only big one there, it'll do. One does not want to starve, and you won't, shopping here.

I chose a vanilla one after a "conversation" with proprietor, me in English and him in Portuguese, looking at all the treats--- The one I chose was of course delicious! The proprietor was friendly and adorable just like this charming little town!
