A narrow trail runs through the woods though the ground cover of ivy could easily overgrow the trail since it was only about a foot wide. Beyond the woods, the creek runs by on both sides as well. Someone has hauled in sand on the southern shore to make a small beach. Unfortunately, the bends in the creek leave a number of tree branches washed up on the sand, so if it was maintained, would greatly improve the appeal of the location. Review #838

During the 1800's, water was diverted to create power for milling, called a "Mill Race". A number of mills operated here. There were tanneries, brick makers and woolen manufacturing to name a few. Various mills operated for decades but faced challenges of periodic flooding. The mills closed over time and only a few foundations remain. The site has been transformed into a beautiful park, complete with sculptures, trails, a historic covered bridge and more. We visited the park yesterday and spent several hours exploring the site. A notable observation Tower is prominent near the river. I climbed the 130 steps to the top to see panoramic views of the river and town of Columbus. Graffiti vandals have left "art" on the tower. There is an elevator, but it was non operational during my visit. Maybe it as just me, but it was a little creepy at the top. A modern colorful playground is located on the north side of the park. Climbing structures, slides, interactive toys and a wide variety of swings fill the area. The equipment is clean and pristine. Benches and picnic tables surround the playground for parents. I saw several pavilions around the park for picnics or meetings. The grounds of the park are tree covered and beautiful. There is a project underway to restore native plants. The New Brownsville Covered Bridge crosses a small duck pond and is a lovely backdrop for photos. The tress bridge is opened to auto traffic. I saw several sculptures including an artistic vine covered tunnel. The sculptures did look like they have endured annual flooding. Fisherman were fishing in small boats in the river. There is a small boat launch in the park. An amphitheater structure is also on the grounds. The setting is an ideal spot for summer concerts. A single basketball court is located on the west side of the park. I did see a set of modern restrooms in the park. Pathways are concrete making travel easy for strollers and wheelchairs. Parking is available at various locations throughout the park. There is no charge to visit the park. Warning: the mosquito population was pretty treacherous during my visit. I would recommend long sleeves, pants and spray. They will carry you away.

This park has been the benefactor of numerous Eagle Scouts projects, the flower beds, the gazebo, picnic tables, and benches to name a few. This is a what you see is what you get kind of park. It is a small park tucked away in a neighborhood. It is nice and has a small parking lot. There is a small porta-potty in the parking lot to use and the park is relatively well maintained. There is a small paved path on the perimeter of the park, 5 laps gets you a mile. The path doubles as a story walk and has benches along it to sit. You will also find a couple of picnic tables under some trees and a share a book kiosk along the trail. The park has a wooden statue of an eagle sitting on a brick pedestal. It is dedicated to William Torrence, a boy scout that was instrumental in establishing the park. The heart of the park is a playground area that is accessible and lined with wood chips. There is a saucer swing, a bank of traditional swings, small jungle gym with a slide, and a larger jungle gym with a couple of slides, some congos and monkey bars. The equipment seems relatively new and is in good shape. The area has a ramp to allow all kids the chance to play on the equipment. Just off of the play area is a open field that can be used to play catch, have a football game, or other outdoor activities. It is in a low lying area of the park, so it is prone to flooding and water retention. This is a good neighborhood park. I would not travel to far to come here, but it can provide hours of fun for the little ones, as well as those wishing to walk their four legged friend or just get their steps in.

It…read moremay be relatively new judging by the age of the trees planted along the winding path, but it seems well planned. There is drainage in the middle of the walking loop so that the area by the parking lot doesn't flood easily. The path is smooth blacktop to provide solid footing. There are benches along the path for those who want to rest while at the park. And I counted six picnic tables under the shade of the mature trees in the middle. Pretty nice place! The park has definite signs of Boy Scout involvement. One of the two pergolas on the path has a dedication plaque to former scouts. A carved eagle also sits on a pedestal with a plaque with an eagle scout symbol. I believe that I read the scouts help maintain the flower beds as well. The park is still very flat, so there may be some puddles on part of the path. However, I had no risk of getting wet feet since the path was wide enough to accommodate my walking. I think the park has great potential if it stays maintained. Lots of trees were planted and vines were set near the pergolas to offer shady tunnels once the spring growth occurs. The park has a decent and well maintained full basketball court. It has a covered pavilion with some picnic tables. However, there is no grill. There is another covered area in the back of the park that is empty and has bench seating around the interior perimeter. The center piece of the park is a jungle gym that primarily consists of three slides, a rock climbing wall and a tic-tac-toe game. It looks relatively new and is in good repair. The ground of the play area is lined with wood chips. As I mentioned, the park is small, so there is no walking/jogging trail, restroom facility or water. I think that a 3.5 rating is more accurate in the case of this park. It is well maintained and has the basics. It is a very nice park to go to if you are in the area, but i probably would not make it a destination.

How are a group of adults suppose to enjoy their off day at this business if they can't simply relax and have a beer? I try to go back to this place every year thinking it's fun, but it's just not how it use to be. Staff are always rude as well. Wish I could go back 5 years when this place was at its peak.

However, I didn't see any restrooms on site. One of the things I discovered was that about midway up Carver Street, there is a ramp for cars to drive down to a paved parking area surrounded by trees. It's nice that the parks department provided a spot for the parents of the participants of the sports activities. The park seemed to be in pretty good shape and although there had been rain recently, the fields looked in good shape too without any standing water. Seems like a decent park for the neighborhood.
