I have never stepped foot inside the Nevada County Court House. Never had a need to do so. But I…read morewas driving on Broad Street in Nevada City and the building, a street away in Church Street, caught my attention. Tall building, one of the tallest in the downtown area, painted white. It had an art deco design, very cool vintage version. Clean geometric lines and soft angular corners. It even had art deco lettering and of course a clock on the front facade. So my review is more from the perspective of a tourist, history buff, and amateur admirer of architecture. The first court house was built on Broad Street in 1851. It was a wood structure along with the log cabin jail. In 1856, the court house moved to its present day location. In the years ensuing, it has burnt down several times but always rebuilt. In 1900, it went through an extensive remodeling and updating. But in 1937, the renovations for its present day architectural presence occurred. The commissioned architects was George Sellon. Sellon was a noted architect of his time. He was the first California State Architect 1907. This position was created by the Governor after the devastating 1906 San Francisco earthquakes and fire. He resigned the post after two years due to Legislation preventing him from working on his own private projects. His work is listed under many historical registries. His Sacramento based private architectural business continues today as Lionakas. I drive by the present day Lionakas office and never put the history together until now just by a happen chance lazy weekend excursion to Nevada City. Luv the rich history of our local gold mine counties.
