Located roughly half an hour from Melbourne's eastern suburbs, Warburton is such a truly beautiful golf course that my long-suffering boyfriend had to make me leave my camera in the car lest I spend the whole time taking pictures and holding the other golfers up. While Warburton is an 18 hole course, you can opt for a round of 9 holes instead and non-members are very welcome to play. Fees are $21 per person for 9 holes and hire clubs $10 and staff are hugely accommodating of novices. Alongside the breathtaking green there's a club house with a bar, food menu, televisions, pool tables and lots of comfy seating; and far from feeling like a fusty old sports club, it's actually quite the place for an afternoon bevy after a round. Scandal be damned, Warburton could make even the most sports phobic gal fall in love with golf.

For starters it is set on a stunningly beautiful hillside with a trickling river running through. Ok it is quite steep so be prepared to hire a golf cart or do some decent exercise. But it is worth it. When you do get to the top of the hill at about the 4th and 6th holes you will have two of the best T offs you have ever had the pleasure of driving from. It is a breeze to hit 300+ metres down the large slope and boy does it make all of the effort of walking up there float away into history ,as you smash the ball from the top of the mountain (ahem I mean hill). Warbuton Golf course is definitely a good days golfing.

Morack Public Golf Course is a great place for a hit on the weekend (or weekday, if you're lucky…read moreenough to be able to do it), and it's really good to be able to get outside and pretend that I know what I'm doing every time I pick up a golf club. It's an 18 hole course, well kept (especially considering the drought-like conditions of the previous few years) and easy to get to, being just near the Bunnings on Burwood Hwy. There is a driving range near the clubhouse and shop (which is handy, as the old one was on the site that is now the aforementioned giant hardware monstrosity) and there is plenty of parking. Green fees are between $12 and $24, depending on when you play, how many holes you're playing and whether or not you're a junior. All in all, I find it a great way to give my friends an opportunity to mock my terrible golfing performance, and let's face it, if you need to get out of the house, Morack Public Golf Course is a great excuse for some exercise and a catch up with your mates.

Faces south so think about where the sun will be before you go or go with good sunglasses. Has a large staff of teachers and is a teaching base for one of the golf associations. Has a small synthetic putting green that is super quick and a larger grass green that is very rough and slow at the moment (March 2012). The balls are yellow and a bit harder than you might like. It is useful prior to play at the nearby Sandringham or Cheltenham public courses. I like it mainly for the ability to hit off the grass.

Kingston Links is a public access course with a links style. It sits in a river valley near the…read moreMonash freeway so is easily accessible. Most fairways are wide and most greens elevated slightly. I generally consider it overpriced but I guess they can charge the going rate give then lack of good public courses in the area. I tend to prefer nearby Waterford Valley as the holes have more challenge. There is no shade on the course so it can be a long hot day especially as the valley seems to hold the heat and add to the humidity. The course can get waterlogged fairly easily and may be inaccessible after very heavy rain as you have to drive through a causeway. There are at least three smallish bunkers on most holes and water is in play on about six. The greens are ok - usually fairly slow. It gets very busy on the weekends.

The website makes it look like…read morethis is a great mini golf course for kids, but lacks any kind of personality or fun and the skill level is probably beyond even pro golfers! Every hole has multiple hills and each seem to slope into the fake grass edges making it very annoying to take your shot as the ball constantly rolls into the edge. Very poorly designed course. At $40 for two adults and a child it's certainly not great value. My child gave up about half way around and we were also frustrated and disappointed for having paid so much money for the experience.

I have met the president more than a few times and he is always good for a chat and treats all patrons as special guests. This course is a public / private venture so anyone can play there and memberships are also welcome. Their website lets you know the prices but 9holes is about $15 and well worth a look in the afternoon from about five for a casual twighlight round.
