It's no secret that I'm a huge fan of manatees, they are my spirit animal after all, and I have…read morebeen swimming, diving, and following them for over 30 years. This organization has made such a positive impact on these adorable sea cows, floaty potatoes, mermaids or whatever nickname you prefer for these gentle giants.
Located in Longwood, Florida, the Save the Manatee Club (SMC) is a beacon of hope for the conservation of the beloved and endangered manatees. Founded in 1981 by Jimmy Buffett and former Florida Governor Bob Graham, the organization has since grown into a renowned nonprofit dedicated to protecting these awesome sea cows and their habitats.
Save the Manatee Club was established at a time when manatee populations were rapidly declining due to threats, such as boat strikes, habitat loss, and water pollution. Recognizing the urgent need to protect this species, the founders embarked on a mission to raise public awareness and implement effective conservation strategies.
Today, the organization has over 40,000 active members and continues to work tirelessly to safeguard manatees and their ecosystems. SMC achieves its goals through a combination of advocacy, education, research, rescue and rehabilitation efforts, and legal actions.
One of Save the Manatee Club's most popular initiatives is the Adopt-A-Manatee program. This unique program lets individuals symbolically adopt a real, living manatee that also contributes to the organization's efforts.
Participants receive a personalized adoption certificate, a photo and biography of their adopted manatee, and regular updates on their manatee's progress. Funds raised through the program support a range of vital conservation efforts, including habitat restoration, public awareness campaigns, and rescue and rehabilitation programs.
When my amazing daughter first surprised me with the adoption of Bama several years ago, I was deeply touched by her thoughtfulness and the bond we both felt with these gentle giants. Each year since then, she has renewed the adoption in my name, providing me with a constant reminder of the beauty and wonder of these remarkable animals. Bama made history in 2009 as the first manatee captured and tagged in Alabama waters. Bama typically migrates from Alabama to Florida's west coast each winter.
The Save the Manatee Club offers a variety of services and amenities to engage the public and promote manatee conservation including an education center, gift shop, and events and workshops to educate the public about manatees and inspire action for their protection.
Bottom line: The Save the Manatee Club has made a profound impact on the conservation of manatees and their ecosystems over the past four decades.
