Having seen what were some pretty smashing reviews on Yelp, I really wanted to love Double Barrel Cafe; and when it came to the service and the atmosphere - I did. Having said that, my breakfast roll was a tad bit sub par compared to some of the other offerings in town.
Star 1: How were the service and atmosphere?
As I touched on, the hybrid inside outside streetside atmosphere at Double Barrel Cafe is a nice little peaceful enclave next to the hustle and bustle of a weekday morning, and the friendly and efficient service were more than enough to brighten my morning on what was an otherwise gloomy and humid Summer day. I ordered my roll and waited only five or so minutes before it came out. Star Granted .
Star 2: How were the portions relative to the cost?
$7.00 is a great price for just about anything in Sydney, and the same held true for this breakfast roll pictured below. It wasn't huge, but it was certainly filling. Star Granted.
Stars 3 and 4: How was the food?
So early on I received some mixed signals at Double Barrel Cafe. Highlighted under the breakfast menu header were the words "made to order", which elevated my hopes pretty high for my breakfast sandwich. However, right next to that sign was a lineup of pre-made breakfast sandwiches sitting in the display window, and after receiving mine it was clear that this was heated up after the fact. My guess is the made to order header was in reference to the more comprehensive breakfast items on the menu, but I was a bit confused nonetheless.
My actual scrambled egg and bacon roll was nothing special, but it did the trick for a morning filler. The bacon was a bit overcooked and the bread more or less falling apart as I ate it, but I finished the whole thing, which is more than I can say for a lot of cheaper breakfast items these days. No Stars Granted.
Star 5: Would you eat here every day if you could?
Maybe I simply ordered wrong, but there are certainly better breakfast options in the city in my opinion. I'll be back to give Double Barrel another go, but in the meantime I wouldn't abandon my breakfast staples for it. No Star Granted. read more
