I've been going to pricey salons for years but was in town and needed color and a cut so thought I'd give them a try. Neither of these went well and I will NOT be back. I actually have to schedule an appointment with my salon at home to fix everything. Color - An instructor consulted on this and gave instructions different than what the student wanted to do. Turns out that the instructor was wrong. When my hair was dried she came back and said "oh, this looks nice". Really? I had blotches all over my head. Cut - I asked for a cut to bring my longest length up to the shortest layer - get rid of the layers. I was told that I didn't have any layers and they proceeded to trim it. When I redid my hair myself, the layers are 1"-2" shorter than the length of my haircut. Very obvious layers. The student was very nice, but the experience was money wasted 100%. I still have to pay for a color and cut fix and hope they can squeeze me in quickly. read more

Came in for a trim, Told stylist I have wavy hair. She blow dried it straight, did no sectioning, brushed it all to the back and cut it dry straight across. She cut maybe an inch and then said with another half inch she could make it all even. I told her multiple times it was uneven, she brushed me off and got the educator who had me look down and cut more than I wanted. At no point was there any checking for even ness or any blending done. Immediately after leaving I noticed the back is shorter than the front and there is unevenness all throughout. It looks like I took kitchen scissors to it. When I braid it the ends look absolutely awful. I've come here multiple times and the educator usually checks more throughly than what I got. I'm very upset I grew my hair out for over a year for this to happen over a trim. Now I have to wait until they open during the week to call and I'm worried it will only get shorter read more

I asked for a tapered fade and half inch off the top and after an HOUR in the chair had to get up and leave after this kid tried using clippers on the top. Every student in there is sitting there on their phones doing nothing and learning nothing, super cold and unwelcoming. Terrible and inconsistent communication. Plus blatantly discriminatory practices. I wear hijab. I called them numerous times to confirm that they understand my requirements as a hijabi (I veil my hair from men) and that they are would in fact be able to accommodate. They insisted they were able to and were "very cautious and particular about that sort of thing". But when I came in, they were not only going to seat me around several men, but also admitted that they booked me for a room where they knew male students would be present. There was a student who apparently told them this was wrong before I arrived, to which they said that I said "I was fine showing my hair to men". Mind you, I was reassured several times beforehand. I was even told to wash my hair at home in consideration of this and booked at a time where I was promised care. This establishment failed to meet my religious accommodations, finding it appropriate to tell me to take off my hijab while surrounded by men. This was after the fact that the business had informed me that they would be able to offer me space and privacy in accordance with my religious beliefs. I felt humiliated and uncomfortable, especially when I was informed that the business lied and said that I was fine with my hair being shown in such a way when that was not the case. I cannot in good faith recommend this business to anyone as they are incapable of respecting customer requests and accommodations in an honest way. read more

I have come to Douglas J schools for years. I don't get my hair cut and colored often, and it's the least expensive option. As far as getting the services as described on their site, it does not happen. I had to ask once for the student to do the massage part. I don't ever see other students doing it to other clients either. For a cut and color, I sit in the chair for 4-5 hours depending on the student, and my hair is fine and just past my shoulders. I have had people offer to pay for me to go elsewhere. I had a good student last time, so if she is still there I'll give it another shot. read more

My first experience here was fabulous. Since then I have had several different services done, and they were all less than fair. My most recent haircut, I was charged full price for less than half of what I paid for. I selected a wash, cut, scalp massage, and blow dry. All I received was a cut. I scheduled an appointment for myself and my 2 daughters as there were tons of openings for a Saturday online. About 30 minutes later I received a call telling me they did some moving around and could no longer accommodate the appointments. When I asked why that I seen alot of appointments available, I was told they were doing some schedule moving around and I must have snuck in and scheduled. Today I had made an online appointment for 2:00pm for the $18 basic haircut. All I wanted my to have the ends of my hair trimmed. To give reference, the website describes the $18 haircut as this: "Haircut-Receive a stress-relieving scalp and shoulder ritual, shampoo, haircut, and blow dry." Well, there was no stress relieving scalp or shoulder ritual and I had to ask her to wash my hair before she cut it. She seemed to be more concerned with how much specific length she could take versus inspecting the condition of the ends that needed trimming. She combed it all straight back and made 6 quick snips. Done. I asked, "That's it?" and said, "yes." Then she began blow drying my hair. I didn't think much of it as it was included in the description of the service I chose. After she was done, she walked me to the cashier who proceeded to tell me $30. What!? I asked her why it was $30 when I came in for an $18 haircut and she told me that I had a blowout service. Umm, no. I told her that I did not sign up for that and she just stood there and stared at me, so I stared back at her. Clearly, she was going to do absolutely nothing to rectify this situation. For whatever its worth, this is the description of the service I DID NOT REQUEST, but received & paid for: "Haircut Blowout Finish: This includes advanced blow out techniques and light iron work." Yeah, there was no iron work either. This is ridiculous to me, and seriously, I wouldn't have requested a $12 blowout so I could walk home in the rain. Quite frankly, if I am going to knowingly spend $30 on a haircut, it would be with a credentialled stylist who is going to spend more than 30 seconds cutting my hair. Never Again!! read more

This is my second time coming to Aveda and I was excited since my first experience was very good. I got a shoulder massage the first time, a nice shampoo, and a good haircut. However, I decided to get my hair colored and cut there this time and I was extremely disappointed. I told them this was my second time getting colored and I wanted something very subtle and layers. As you can see, my hair is very blonde, very dyed, not uniform, and I can barely see the layers I asked for. I was sad that I didn't get the shoulder massage, oil treatment, or a long shampoo/conditioner. I'm not usually picky about haircuts, and this is my first yelp review ever. I never write reviews, but I had a very odd experience at Douglas J recently. I've been coming here for cuts, color, blow-outs, formal hairstyles, you name it for over a decade. I occasionally got a less-experienced stylist that cut my hair a little too short or gave a less than stellar color job, but overall I have usually been impressed. However, in November I went to Julia J. for a simple balayage, a color service I have gotten more than once at the institute and had no issues. Julia was kind but a bit unprofessional, at one point stating that two products were "the same f****** thing". I get that we were around the same age and maybe she felt comfortable with me, but I still found it surprising that she would swear in front of a client. But the real issue was this- she did a test strand and told me that my hair was too damaged to do a balayage on. I thought this was odd since my hair is virgin (haven't dyed it in 5 years), soft to the touch, and I take pretty good care of it. But, I trusted her as the "professional". She told me that she could do a Botanical Treatment and I could buy and use the Botanical Repair shampoo, conditioner, and leave-in treatment ($150 total ) for a month and then come back and it should be healthy enough to dye. She also said no heat for that month. Again, I thought this was a little weird, but I did exactly as she said and returned a month later. She did another test strand and again told me that my hair was too damaged and she couldn't put color on it. She did another Botanical Treatment and told me to return in another month. I was very suspicious at this point though and decided to get a second opinion. I went to the Douglas J Salon in Okemos and told them what had happened. The stylist there was very confused by what the institute had told me and said that my hair is not damaged at all and that she thinks the other stylist (Julia) just didn't want to or didn't know how to do what I wanted. I totally understand that these are students, but I would have much preferred Julia to just tell me that she didn't feel comfortable dying my hair rather than wasting my time and money. The stylist at Douglas J Okemos did the gorgeous balayage that I wanted all along and my hair is still in great shape. I guess you get what you pay for and for that reason I will not be returning to the Douglas J Institute for any future services. read more

This place is the BEST! I don't live in Michigan anymore, but when I come to visit Grandbabies, I try to make this a first stop. My colorist/stylist BREANNA B. is fantastic. Her professionalism and skill are so much appreciated. She did highlights on color, which turned out beautifully. The fact that it was half the price of any salon around made it even better! I went here on 3/7/2023 at 11am and they set my head on fire. Excruciating pain. Stay the fuck away. Wrong colors. I specifically asked for teal all over with orange and white highlights (e.g., Miami Dolphins colors). Hair turned out looking like ass and bleached all over. There was a big patch of bleach in the back of my head and the student made it out to be a minor mistake...but it was a 2"x3" patch of hair that was still bleached! Later, after I told the student and instructor that my head was on fire, the student washed the dye out with warm/hot water which irritated the burns even more. Small scabs formed shortly after. A friend introduced me to the Groupon Haircut and Botanical Treatment. And I end up buying two to gift one to a friend. So perhaps she can get Noelia H. who did a wonderful job on my hair. She took her time and made sure everything was cut evenly and when unsure she consulted her instructor before proceeding, showing that she was humble enough to get some assistance if needed. Everyone has to start somewhere and the stylists at Douglas J Aveda Institute in East Lansing are no exception. I am pretty low maintenance with my hair. Straight cut, no layers, maybe a face angle... and I wait YEARS to get it cut. This year, I decided to cut it to donate and figured I'd give Douglas J a try since their prices are incredibly reasonable and the products they use are high quality. They are also open late which works well for my schedule. It's important to note that this is a cosmetology school. Stylists are under the supervision of instructors and they are teaching as they cut your hair. The instructor will usually check in with you at the beginning of your visit and again at the end. They may also stop by throughout your experience to see how things are going and guide your stylist if corrections need to be made. This means your haircut may take a little longer than at a normal salon. In my opinion, it's well worth it to help a new stylist gain experience! That being said, I was greeted kindly when I arrived for my appointment and the receptionist hung my jacket for me so it wasn't in the way at the chair. Sloan was my stylist and she was super sweet. We had a nice conversation while she cut, washed, and styled my hair. I love my new hair cut and look forward to my next one in a few years! read more

My best friend and i went to aveda today to get out hair done before formal, and she walked in with perfect, platinum, BEAUTIFUL hair. she asked for a simple, honey blonde gloss over her platinum, and unfortunately aveda did NOT deliver. First of all, VERY unprofessional behavior. she was taken to the bowl, and the worker did NOT listen to her concerns. my friend was obviously in distress and the worker did NOT listen or even show signs of caring. the worker said the timer needed to be set for 20 minutes while the hair "gloss" set in. then she walked away from the bowl and LEFT my friend alone. my friend had also set a 20 minute timer on her phone, and by the time it went off, the worker was still gone. another 20 minutes went by and then finally the worker came back to wash it off. my friend mentioned several times that she was uncomfortable with the color and if the worker was sure that it was going to lift. and might i mention that at this point, my best friends most beautiful platinum hair was BRIGHT ORANGE. the lady was not accommodating to my friends request, but reluctantly went to go get their manager. the manager acted COMPLETELY UNPROFESSIONAL. the manager had an attitude and said that my friend had to wait until it was blow dried, even though it was clearly orange. my friend asked for a detox mask to try and take off the gloss, and the manager asked the original worker to stay and do the detox mask. the original worker immediately said they could not stay and fix what they messed up, so another worker began to work on the hair. the second student worker did not seem interested and did not comfort my friend. my friend and i went up to the fromt desk and asked to speak to the manager. the employee working in the front went to inform the manager, but did not speak to us directly. again, very unprofessional. after this, the employee working at the front said that they would give my friend a discount, but she would still need to pay. overall, this is the worst experience, most UNPLEASANT and UNPROFESSIONAL behavior i have ever seen. I would NOT recommend this place. at this point, do it yourself, you'll do it better. my friend had to pay 100$ to buy her own supplies to fix the hair that aveda broke. read more

Honestly I find it highly disrespectful to not warn me before I started on the 19th of March, that the reason for the 2 week delay from starting March 5th, was to bring on brand new teachers who have yet to finish out an 18 week class. I find that my time has been wasted, and that only 1 teacher of those 2 are capable of holding an attention span proper enough to do their job accurately. As we were testing out on the first test, the student who was no where near the skills required to do a proper Aveda Ritual, finished 5 minutes early, the teacher testing us out, was distracted talking to the students on the other side of the curtain about off topic issues, while not watching the student doing the test on me. Id love to further my studies and finish a massage certificate, but I do not feel that my time and money is being respected by that teacher, who doesn't have the personal ethics to hold her personal hygiene well enough to know her breath smells like poop, as well the student that I have to sit next to who doesn't sleep, smells like tobacco, is someone seeking to do massage therapy. I find that REPULSIVE to think that someone who drinks diet soda and smokes cancer chemical lden tobacco and doesn't sleep, wants to have a job touching people and promoting healthy tissue. Not sleeping is scientifically proven to cause disease, as well as diet soda and soda in general, and chemical laden tobacco. I personally feel that the aim of being a Meritocracy has been far from reached by most Americans today, as well as this teacher in particular and the student, its completely UNPROFESSIONAL for a teacher to breathe poop breath in your face. Its far from an environment that promotes the assurance of health and a suitable faculty to uphold the strenuous pace of the curriculum in matter. I find that if I wanted my pronouns to be accurate that would be 100% but the time and money placed upon my curriculum would be wasted. read more

A zero for the fact that they completely wasted my time. I was soo excited to take a day off from my busy schedule and have a self care day and this is what happened; So first they called me to ask if I could reschedule my appointment the day of to a time that would work better for them. So to be nice and flexible, I agreed. Then I get there 5 mins late and they say that they can't take me. They said that they were already pushing it with the time that they scheduled me that the extra 5 mins was too late (mind you, this wasn't my original time, so that's their problem for scheduling me too late). Since I was going to get a haircut and a hair mask, I suggested just canceling the mask for the sake of that 5 mins. And they still refused! Coming up with a million and one excuses that are not logical! They didn't make any sense! Cleared they overbooked or something and just lied about me being 5 mins late. And honestly, had they said we're sorry we made a mistake with rescheduling you, I would have been fine, but the fact that they kept coming up with explanations to justify me being late for 5 mins, that made ZERO sense, just made this place a NO for me. read more

I have gone to the Salon for many years and had many different services so I was somewhat nervous about going to the Institute. I DID have some issues with scheduling. Called this past Monday for a Groupon facial and was told to come in on Tuesday. Got there and was told no facials on Tuesday. Bad start. It was rescheduled for Thursday. What can I say about the facial and Valeriana Kostrzewa? She IS a professional and I can't believe she is a student! I made a 2 week appt to see her again as she graduates the beginning of June. I had a 90 minute session that was amazing with concentration on exfoliation and hydration. Douglas J should make her an instructor or make every attempt to keep her. read more

My daughter rec'd a DJ gift certificate and since she is conscientious with her $ she thought to schedule at the institute. Being told she would be under close watch of a seasoned stylist. A perm and trim is what she asked for. 3 hours later her hair looked no different. Not even a trim. She has trouble communicating but how difficult? Calling the next day she was told to come in within a couple of days to be reprocessed. It was not in my good judgement. I felt it better to be able to wait awhile. My request of the manager was simply a gift certificate to be used after her hair repaired. With a smile the said they expected to redo her hair within 2 weeks. It was not within policy to issue a gift certificate so if it could be arranged - we were not allowed at the institute in the future. I wish Doug was still alive he would be appalled. read more

I mostly just get blow outs here, but I have also gotten my hair trimmed twice. I've probably gotten 20+ blow outs there. If you walk in and they have an appointment available, the blow out is complementary. Free! It includes a head massage with aromatherapy oils (I like the minty one), shampoo and conditioner, and blow dry / style. I think hot tools may cost more, but my hair usually looks great after they're finished using a round brush and blow dryer. I do sometimes get the botanical deep conditioning for an extra charge, but it's still way cheaper than most salons. Overall, the stylists that are training there are so nice, professional, thorough, and accommodating. They ask you exactly what you want, which I appreciate because I've gotten bad hair styling because I was too intimidated to speak up. Yes, they are in school, so keep that in mind if you're nervous - but my blow outs always look great. It smells great in there, and you get complementary tea which is a treat in Michigan winters. And when I got a haircut that looked a little uneven, because one side had more layers than the other after I styled it myself - the instructor checked it and fixed it when I went back a couple weeks later for free. Some of the amazing stylists there now that have given me great blow outs and product advice include Amanda, Lexan, Myah, etc... really, you can't go wrong at the price, especially since there is an instructor there checking their work who will swoop in if needed (I've never needed it). And free blow outs??! How can you beat that? I have also gotten a pedicure in their spa and it was very relaxing - took about 1.5 hours. FREE! BLOW OUTS! Seriously - go now! read more

This is my last time I will be going to Douglas J for a service. I was scheduled for a Botan and haircut. They had cancelled my first appointment the day of and I had to reschedule. When I finally did get my appointment my experience was terrible. I was being serviced by a student and she was very good and doing well. She did my botan treatment and hair wash but had to leave for another job and so I was just passed off to another student. The other student took very little interest in hearing about what I wanted done with my hair and ignipored me the first time I tried to show her what I wanted. She then continued to act like she was in a rush to get out of the place and was taking very little time and care with my hair. I had asked for long layers and curtain bangs that blended with face framing pieces. She did not even cut the layers and then gave me curtsins bangs cut straight across one length and no blending or face framing pieces. On top of all of this usually the instructor comes over to check the students work but no instructor looked over my hair or was even asked to check my hair. My hair now looks terrible and I have to spend more money and time trying to find somewhere to fix my hair. I have been a client at Douglas J for many years but after this experience I will not be returning here again for any service. read more

It's probably partially luck of the draw and probably partially due to my very thick, extremely difficult to work with hair, but I'm not coming back here. You're not allowed to tip the students here so I walked out paying $11 for a haircut, which is a pretty good deal. So if you have easy to manage hair, go for it! If anything, my experience highlighted what I pay for at a professional salon due to my difficult to work with hair. The Aveda teacher is often spread thin -- she's not the one delivering your hair cut or style. I had to instruct my student how to cut my bangs and how/when to cut my hair wet/dry. She was unable to select the appropriate round brush (she chose a 1 inch brush as opposed to a 2.5 inch) for my hair and consequentially could not perform a blow out. Just for reference, I routinely do my own blowouts at home. To top it off, she never introduced herself and couldn't hold a conversation. I had to remind myself multiple times that she was a student and I was at a teaching salon! Hair can grow back. The students and front desk are super nice despite some of their low skill levels. They offered tea and many students (maybe massage students) offered hand massages. On a different date, I got a student who will make a superb esthetician one day; she did a remarkable job on my brows. Like I said, it's probably luck of the draw. read more

Wonderful service!! these students are better than professional hairstylists who are working with many years of experience. I had my hair colored from a different hair salon and they totally messed it up by giving me brassy yellowish uneven caramel/blonde highlights. I was very disappointed, so I came to Aveda institute and they corrected the problem very skillfully. They used a good toner mixed with small amount of base color on my hair. End results were fantastic. Not only the new color blended well with my previous highlights, it also complemented my skin tone much better. On top, my hair now had a new healthy and glossy finishing look. It smelled great too. So, I am really glad I came here. read more

I had my hair cut here two or three times while I was a student at Michigan State. When I went it was only $15 for a haircut, and you don't have to tip. Can't beat that. They give you a head massage with GREAT smelling oils and once I even got a hand/arm massage as well (mmm, heaven!). One time my boyfriend even went with me to get his hair cut, too. However, they only use scissors to cut hair here (even on the men!), so they couldn't cut it as close to his head as he would have liked....AND it took forever. I never had them do much more than a trim because I have curly hair and I don't trust stylists who have stick straight hair themselves to be able to give me an amazing haircut. In summary, you should be okay as long as you are female (or you are male with long hair) and you don't have the stylists attempt anything fancy. Call and make an appointment beforehand because chances of getting your hair done as a walk-in client are slim to none. read more

Like many of the other reviewers, it has to be noted that this is a cosmetology and esthiology school. From my experience, the students are typically young adults with a passion for what they do. That said, expect some mistakes; it goes with the territory. Dougy J is a full service salon, providing haircuts, dye, styling, blowouts, waxing, extractions, pedicures, manicures, makeup, etc. From what I've seen they do a pretty good job with everything, but for the reduced cost of all these services you pay for in either mistakes or time. Being a man, with little hair on my head, it could take up to an hour to get a haircut. Usually there were no mistakes, and when I had more hair on my head the students with the help of their instructor could even manage my terrifying double cowlick. Being a man, I also find myself with hair not on my head, and used to have the occasional wax. These take forever. Once again they are students, and it takes longer than going to a professional. You might want to be avoided this service if you are very sensitive to pain; however if you're sensitive to pain, you probably shouldn't be getting wax. But, if you want a low cost wax, they do a pretty good job. In summary If you are willing to be a Guinea pig, this is not a bad place to go; especially if you are one of the many MSU students across the road. If you want perfection, pay the extra coin and go down the road to Okemos to the original Douglas J Salon. read more

I have never had an unpleasant experience at Douglas J. The workers are always very friendly, and the students are very competent. I know some people haven't had good haircuts, but I believe that it can happen anywhere you go. Throughout my 4 (and soon to be 5) years at MSU, every hair cut has been there. Can't beat the price, that's for sure! Once they even accidentally overbooked customers, and they actually sent me to the other Douglas J (where the hair cuts are between $30-40), and they let me pay the regular $16 and they wouldn't accept a tip. Had my hair more or less destroyed at another hair salon in November, and waited until a week ago to repair the damage. Kayliegh H (I believe) was amazing... she mentioned she graduates in less than a month, but I wish I could go back to her! She listened to exactly what I wanted, and my hair color turned out better than I could have imagined. Honestly, the best color service I've ever had. And let's face it... $140 for color service at most hair salons for mediocre satisfaction compared to $36 at Douglas J Institute that resulted in fabulousness will keep me coming back. I have always had a pleasant experience at Douglas J! You must take into account, this is a teaching institution, but even so, they do a fantastic job. One thing I like is they really take their time with you. So what if they are double and triple checking their work? They just want to make sure everything is perfect. Their teachers are always available for extra help and questions, so no worries there. I came here a lot when I was doing many dye jobs on my hair. I went from natural dark brown to golden blonde at this salon. I had no regrets. It took about 4 hours, but that seemed to be exactly the right amount of time. Obviously it takes a while to get the dark color out. I've also gotten a really pretty purple dye here. Haircuts are pretty standard. I recommend this salon for anyone who wants to save a little money, especially on big hair changes like I did, because it practically cut my bill in half for what I would pay at a high-end salon. read more
