How long has Doug's been here? I don't know. Well over 10 years I'm sure. This place is pretty much in the prime waterfront position if you're looking for some fish and chips down at Sandgate, and they're always busy. I was meeting someone for lunch on a sunny Saturday afternoon. The outdoor seating area was already pretty full, but that's okay, we were going picnic style. As I waited for my friend to arrive I noticed the eat in servings were huge, and they all looked delicious. We just went with a couple pieces of barra and some chips, and yes, it was a very healthy serving (we didn't finish the chips, only I finished the huge slab of fish). Doug's is easily Sandgate's best waterfront seafood takeaway joint. Finding good takeaway where the food isn't greasy is always a challenge, especially when it comes to seafood. Thankfully the meals here are far from it. Coupled with the foods distinct taste of freshness, I find myself on frequent returns when in the area. Barramundi, chips and salad are a definite favourite - be aware the serving is huge and I usually find myself sharing. The atmosphere is mostly pleasant. Limited alfresco-style seating if you choose to eat in. There is ample seating along the beachfront across the road if you order takeaway. Service is okay - could be better - though the food certainly makes up for it. If you're in the area and feel the urge for seafood takeaway, Doug's is definitely worth considering. read more

Stumbled upon Doug's Seafood Cafe after a craving for some fish & chips during a visit in Sandgate. The place was packed and we took the last table available before queuing in line for our order. To my dismay, I found out that they were temporarily operating w/out electricity and only grilled fish and salads were available. Due to my level of hunger, I pushed my cravings aside and ordered grilled fish w/ a greek salad and a prawn and haloumi salad. I was pleasantly surprised when our food was brought to our table. The portions were huge and the flavors were fresh and delicious. My one and only complaint is that the prawn and haloumi salad had only 3 (delicious) prawns on it! On the upside, the haloumi was plentiful. If you're in the area and craving some fresh seafood, I recommend stopping by. Tip: Cash and outdoor seating only. read more

Doug's is better than "Fish on Flinders" but it is not ppl cheap. Food is expensive for what it is. Chip serving sizes are okay. However the calamari is terrible. They don't even remove string which is just laziness. I don't eat meat but my husband has said their burgers are okay. Fish is overpriced but usually is fresh. You'll see flies inside the cold boxes. The windows of the shop are filthy and I think that is a dead giveaway. If the windows of cold boxes and front vantage point are filthy it is a good judge of how unclean they are. Service is generally rushed and rude. Not once in the 9 years we have been going to Doug's have we ever had service with a smile. We not once been treated properly - staff here seem to be not well trained and more like you would find at say McCrappy's. They staff turn over seems high. There area couple of staff that have been there a long time. Doug's is popular because of its location not it's food. The chips are slightly better than the other joints along the waterfront. However, you won't find many locals here. read more

These people are uncompromising and rude. We ordered a $20 twin pack and the lady serving misunderstood and thought we'd ordered an $11 barra and chips. We returned to ask them to fix the situation. They blamed us and refused to fix it. They wouldn't even compromise and continued to say they repeated the order to us and the women thought we'd ordered something else. So it was their mistake but they just tried to make us feel it was our fault. Then on top of that, we ordered another bara and chips because we needed more food. Instead of serving us bara, they sneakily gave us cheaper fish (we could definitely taste the difference) because they were annoyed that we'd complained. This place is always buzzing, which tells you the food is good. Really good fish & chips, and huge portions of everything. Always very fresh seafood too. Sometimes the service can be a bit lacking (I'd use the word brusque) but I cannot fault the food, the price or the speed of service. read more

Amazing seafood. So popular though, that it can take for aaaages to get served. Pretty quick to cook it though. So if you're going to get food, maybe call ahead and order, or leave enough time to wait in line! read more

By far the best takeaway place on the Sandgate waterfront- highly recommended. Doug's is very popular locally and for good reason- it's a lovely environment, fantastic food (try their burgers, generous and well priced, you can't go wrong) and the staff are always helpful. Due to its popularity it can be quite busy, but well worth the wait. read more

Doug's is a Sandgate icon. There is simply no better seafood restaurant in the area, whether you're looking for take-away or a dining experience. The only complaint is that they have a very high staff turnover and the service suffers for it. read more

Dougs is indeed a Sandgate icon, and the food is brilliant, BUT WHAT RESTAURANT IN 2014 HAS NO WAY TO PAY BUT CASH??? NO EFTPOS, NO CREDIT!!! I'm not sure what bizarre kind of bank fee/ govt protest is going on here, but with the nearest ATM a ten minute walk away it is just rude and poor customer convenience and service. read more

Food is awesome but sadly staff are always rude and seem to have attitude, I have been charged extra by $10 before and a couple times after that, I'm thinking because they add your order up without a calculator and just in their heads... It gets a 3 star though because of their cheaper menu compared to all other fish and chip stores along the beach front here in Brighton... this is our go to fish & chip place! also everyone is a fan here, be prepared to wait. i think for the past 16years we have been eating here, i have only dine in 5 times due to how busy it can get. recently they have added an ATM machine, which is a step up from it having no eftpos machine. I will still advise to have cash on hand incase. Food is always delicious & fresh! Location is great and sets the scene. seating is very limited, a lot of families tend to do take away. The waterfront at sandgate have plenty of table setups for families to enjoy the view and food. read more

Generous servings and reasonable prices. Service is quick and staff are friendly enough but it just slightly misses the mark on crunchy, fresh tasting chips. The lack of eftpos facilities is also a deterrent for us. Always busy though so they must be doing something right! read more

Was driving past feeling like seafood and it was honestly the worst seafood I have ever had in my life,calamari was over cooked, garlic prawns was too much salt that I couldn't even tast the prawns,scallops where frozen and the so called fresh prawns had no flavour what so ever and they are right next to the trawlers where they can get them fresh like I have done on many occasions. Please people save your money and eat else where. read more
