Ok so if you read my reviews you probably know I hate giving a bad review but this one just…read morecouldn't be helped. Came up to Sitka for a fishing trip. Trip was excellent but our flights were cancelled due to bad weather. So we had to get a hotel and wanted near downtown so we could get a bite to eat. We chose the Sitka Hotel. Price was expensive but on par with other hotels in the area. A double bed room was almost 300 bucks. It was clean but had an old chair in it to sit in and a desk, tv on the dresser and a mini fridge with a super cheap little coffee maker on top. Bed only had a single pillow per side but the sheets were very nice. That's where it ends though. In a state where the sun doesn't go down hardly at all you probably would want blackout blinds or curtain in the room. This room had a single curtain but the rod only went halfway across the window. There were mini blinds behind it but they didn't block a damn thing and they were broken to hell and had a section missing. The bathroom had some cheesy countertop, old fixtures and a plastic tub shower combo you'd find at a motel 6. Hot water was medium hot when it worked but my shower felt like I was competing with another room for hot water. It would get hot then cold then hit then cold etc etc. Like all motels these days there's no soap or shampoo it's just the dispensers bolted to the shower wall. The shampoo reminded me of the cheapest shampoo you could buy. Left your hair super dried out and stringy. The conditioner wasn't much better and barely evened things out. Body wash was either empty of didn't dispense. There were no directions on how to get the tv to work and from what I can tell either the cable was out or they didn't pay their bill because no matter what I tried I couldn't get to channels to watch. I would not stay here unless you absolutely had to. It's not worth it when right down the street there's a new hotel that has better amenities and probably not beat down like this place is.

The guest Rooms are available with kitchenette and laundry facilities on the 1st and 3rd floors. I always stay on the 3rd floor with the spectacular 240 degree view of the fishing boats coming in and out of the ANB harbor, the bridge and historic downtown. Karras Day Inn is walking distance to everything! Also a back porch for morning coffee and listening to the eagles and ravens. Whether the sun is out or the southeast natural rain, the view itself is spectacular. They no longer have breakfast served but kitchenettes suffice, as well as the local restaurants near by.

Kayak review Summary/ TLDR…read moreI would definitely recommend SWCK. Gear was outstanding, response time was fantastic, safety was exceptional and the day trip was very fun. Longer summary Mike was very responsive when I tried to book the kayak trip. We would be in Sitka for the day during our week-long Alaska cruise with Holland America (great cruise line, but that is another review). SWCK is a bit of a walk from where the bus drops you off at the visitors center, but that wasn't a big deal. Walking across the bridge to to SWCK gave us a great view of Sitka. Mike was ready with all the gear and kayaks. We let him know that we had to be back in time to get on the boat and he definitely gave us enough time to get back. We were 2 adults, an 11yo, a 9yo, and an 8yo. The adults have kayaked a couple times before and the kids were new to it. Mike is experienced with younger kayakers as well as older kayakers (he has *a lot* of experience). After a good safety and technique talk, we set off for a beach for lunch and then saw a whale in the distance, given our strength and ability to kayak he changed course so we could get a closer look at the whale and she was beautiful. We also saw sea lions, sea otters, and bald eagles. Since Mike is so experienced with kayaking and taking photos, he took photos and videos of us the whole time and airdropped it to me at the end, which was awesome. The weather was wonderful. Needless to say, Mike is very personable and loves what he does. Thank you for letting us share the day with you, Mike. Definitely a highlight of our trip.

Just a 15-minute walk from downtown, Sitka National Historical Park is Alaska's smallest national historical park. What makes this park truly special is its unique blend of Tlingit heritage and Russian history. The park is home to beautifully crafted totem poles, scenic trails, and historical sites that tell the story of the region's Indigenous peoples and the Russian influence that shaped Sitka. The totems themselves were stunning and far more impressive in person than my partner and I expected. The combination of the well-maintained forest trail, the sound of nature around us, and these huge carved totems appearing along the path makes this place one of the highlights of our trip. Alaska in the summertime is well worth a visit!

The bus just dropped us off and picked us up an hour later, which wasn't enough time. The visitor center has beautiful totem poles, interesting exhibits, and a great 15‑minute documentary about Sitka's Russian and U.S. history. We also met Nena, a watercolor artist who showed us her work, and watched a woodcarver demonstrate how he turns raw wood into art -- both were highlights. There are several easy trails (10, 15, and 30 minutes), but with only an hour we couldn't enjoy them fully. Next time, we'll take public transportation and explore at our own pace. The park is absolutely worth visiting -- just skip the overpriced excursion.
