I don't know why there's people commenting on here saying that this place is expensive. It's actually not to Main Street they charge way more. All people want nowadays is a free handout so those are probably the ones that are complaining. I've had nothing but kindness from these people their butts off every single day and for somebody to sit here and saying that it's filthy it's actually not. I through the vet clinic and for anyone that does complain it's like why don't you do something to actually help them if you complain so much maybe pick mop and go in the back and try to help them or volunteer you think it looks dirty volunteer there and go help them clean, but there's no need to make false statements about this place I don't appreciate people doing it and I'm sure everybody there doesn't appreciate it either this place is actually very clean. My sweet male cat suffered a complete urinary blockage and needed an emergency procedure to clear the blockage and had to be hospitalized for several days. I expected a crazy vet bill but they were very fair with the pricing and made sure they kept my budget in mind. They saved my cat's life and kept some money in my pocket, couldn't have asked for a better outcome. Staff were amazing and I felt comfortable with my baby in their care. Doctor McMillan was a god send she kept checking in on my cat after I took him home to make sure he was recovering well. read more

The worst vet I've ever ever been to! Terrible experience. I bought my cat here to be spayed, because this is who the agency I adopted her from uses, unfortunately. I dropped her off, and they were super short and rude. You can tell they all hate their lives & jobs. they told me they'd call me to let me know when she was ready for pickup. They NEVER called at all. I arrived at 4:45 to pick her up, and didn't get out of there till 5:30. They ask each customer what their pets belongings look like... they are extremely unorganized! When I finally got my cat, they gave me no instructions of after care until I asked. They also gave me no after care paper work. AT ALL!!! They were terrible. Lastly, my cat got microchipped during her procedure and they gave me absolutely no information on that. No pamphlet to set up the microchip or anything at all!! When I called to express my concerns and disappointments the lady on the phone (don't know her name but shes the only older lady who works there) was interrupting me, not letting me get a word in, and yelling. Please do not take your dog to this disgusting place. I took my dog for an easy procedure (a light wound in my dogs paw), They not only caused my dog to go into a seizure, but they caused me to go to the emergency room for stress and panic attack because of how they run their office procedures. They almost killed my dog. The black doctor (I dont know his name but he knows who he is) specifically told me that my dog would be given a light sedative to remove the hair along the paw for treatment. I asked him if the light sedative would harm him and he said NO. When the procedure started he gave his scope to a young women to monitor my dogs vitals and he left the room. When my dog was being brought back from being put to sleep, she left the room as well leaving only one person and myself in the room. The light sedative was not light at all, as soon as my dog was given the sedative, he dropped to the floor immediately. The young lady who administered the sedative, said she would come back later once the sedative took effect and put my dog to sleep but the other technician told her that he was already out. THAT WAS NOT A LIGHT SEDATIVE GIVEN TO MY DOG. As soon as my dog was given another shot to bring him back he went into a cardiac arrest and had a seizure. At that moment my dog howled with fear and pain and stiffness when his mouth opened up all the way. He was hurting very bad and because the lady who was responsible to check the vitals left the room, the other technician yelled for help and they quickly moved him to another room and asked me to leave. They made me sign paperwork in case he died and to cover other charges while I was having a panic attack being there and seeing all their inefficiencies. I left the vet thinking I would never see my Rowdy (Golden Retriever), and headed to the emergency room at Baptise Hospital because I was having a panic attack. Later that afternoon they called me to tell me that my dog was alive and ready to pickup. When I went to pick him him up the black doctor told me that the medication was what made him have a seisure and had no explanation why it took place. He didnt care other than to take my $450 cost. I told him in the lobby that he had told me that the medication was a light sedative and that it would not effect my dog, and he had no explaination but to urge me to leave the lobby where other people were listening at me crying and begging for information. I later called to speak to a supervisor and they would not allow me to talk to anyone. DO NOT TAKE YOUR PET HER UNLESS YOU WANT IT TO DIE. The lack of compassion within the support staff, the poor quality of service to pet parents makes Dowlen Road Vet Center a horrible choice. Staff is rude uncaring with a smart ass attitude. Long wait when no one in office, staff blames it on the doctors and lack of exam rooms. It looks like new management(doctors) . This vet office has turned from a warm inviting place t bring your fur baby to a cold feeling with a COFFEE BAR! Come on a COFFEE BAR in a vet's office. If you're planning to travel abroad, find another Vet. Due to the lack of knowledge on the part of the Vet in charge about the processing of paperwork between the USDA and the foreign government, I nearly missed my window to take my pets with me overseas. I explained the process as told to me by the USDA, but due to arrogance of not only the Vet, but the receptionist as well, it must have gone in one ear and out the other. Tank goodness they weren't the only approved vet practice. As a matter of a fact, there were 3 Vets list capable of handling pets going overseas, and although at Dowlen Road Vet Center they claimed to be accredited, they are not listed as an accredited Veterinarian according to the USDA. don't believe I'd even take my grandkids earthworm there at this point. read more

We recently got a new rescue dog. Before we were able to bring her home we were told she had to be spayed, so we agree and let them send her to their usual vet ( dowlen road vet). For starters they put her under sedation and cut her open without doing a full exam and noticing that she was already spayed. Secondly, they ran a fecal sample and a CT scan. They both came back clear, however when we took her to our personal vet (after days of not eating and becoming very lethargic) they ran the same test and found that she had a severe case hookworms. Her case was so severe she was starving to death. THE SAME TESTS!! How could they not see either one of these issues when they are beyond obvious. Please please do your research before taking your fur baby to this place! read more

My interactions with this vets office are related to contact to donate as they generously give their time to assist rescues in our area with temporary boarding and care. Yes the first person on the phone is not always knowledgeable, but they connect me to someone that is. The recent changes at this location including staffing decisions and updating has been well received by friends I know who use them so would not go by some of the comments from 2019 or so. read more

She was rude and acted as though she couldn't be bothered with any of my questions. We used to go to West End animal clinic but their prices were a lot more expensive than this place. It's $10 cheaper for the office visit and a lot of the procedures are cheaper at Dowlen rd veterinary clinic as well. They also give a discount to spay and neuter stray cats that you don't plan on keeping. We really like this place we feel like it's a good place if you have a lot of animals to take care of because of the cheaper prices and we really like the doctors and the staff. read more

The first time I called to potentially begin bringing my dogs to a new vet since I noticed that their offices were open on Saturdays. Fortunately, I decided against that. Today I called to see if they had the medicated shampoo that I use for my dogs since my vet's office is currently out. In both instances, the person answering the phone was incredibly unhelpful and their tone suggested that they didn't want to be bothered. I work in the service industry and I would never dream of giving such poor experiences. Needless to say, I will never even entertain the idea of bringing my babies here. To follow up- the next office I called hit the nail on the head. They immediately knew what I was looking for; checked for it in the system; physically confirmed that they had it in stock; called my vet to approve the prescription; and quoted me the exact price. This experience was less than 5 minutes. Friendly, professional, and helpful. I have a feeling that even if they weren't able to help me, the delivery and communication would still be better than the initial call to Dowlen. read more

This is a higher end boutique type place. They are certainly there to make $$. That being said, when I brought my cat in for life or death treatment, they were kind enough to extend me credit to treat him. Every vet we've seen there really cares about the animals and that's all I could ever ask for. That said, we've used "their" groomer 3 times now. They claim not to be associated with the groomer "side", yet they are who you pay. They cannot give you quotes as to cost. And it's next to impossible to speak to a groomer. Last time we had 2 babies, in for shaving, bathing and the works. We paid over $150 per pet and neither had been bathed. We got them home and the loose fur and dander brushed right off all over the place. Their ears had not been cleaned nor their claws trimmed. We haven't been back for grooming! read more

Literally the worst clinic. I run a rescue and brought a dog in to get vaccinated and healthy before adopting them out. Told me the dog was 5-6 and heartworm negative and had demodex mange. I adopt the dog out in Portland. The dog is 12 high heartworm positive and had a bacterial skin infection. Nothing they did was right. When I called to talk to the vet the manger came on the phone and was beyond rude and didn't help at all. Never apologized or admitted any fault. Do not trust them. I was warned by multiple old vet techs. It's worth it to pay more somewhere else!!! read more

This use to be the only place we go, even though we are in Port Arthur. The Vets are OK and receptionist staff are too. The prices are good and the staff are friendly and accommodating. So I would give 4 Stars for the VET CLINIC ONLY. The New Groomer however is either inexperienced or LAZY. After Harvey my Long Haired Husky got into ALOT of water and became matted so bad he had trouble sitting down. We tried and tried and could not get the mats out. I am telling you it was BAD, like his rear was one large matt. So we took him in and they mentioned they might have to sedate him to get the matts out and worst case scenerio shave some parts of him. We were OK with this because he was in so much pain. Well, when I picked him up the groomer came to me personally and explained that he was a great boy and she didn't even have to sedate him. She mentioned that it was hard but considering the alternative of having to shave him and the problems it could cause she didn't mind. She said it took her 3+ hours but he was better the ever, it was amazing! I would have paid $300 easy. Fast forward to this session. We have been trying to keep up with his fur since then as to never put him through that but his rear always gets ahead of use and started to getting matted, though no where near hat it was. So we decided to take him in for a visit. I scheduled and all day visit since def furring takes so long, however, I was told that they had a new group who was from a name brand pet store, so that she could do a lot more volume and didn't take as long. Well, first warning sign was that I got a call stating his rear needed to be shaved since it was way to matted and compacted with fur that no comb would ever make it through it. I reluctantly agreed thinking maybe, just maybe it was worst then I thought and his rear wouldn't be to hard to keep out of the sun. The second call I got stated that they need to shave the undercoat as his belly was to matted. This surprised me as I use a defur tool on him and while his belly is SUPER THICK I havn't seen a matt down there since the storm. I didn't think ti was a huge deal and was very disappointed in the quality at this point but reluctantly agreed since it was his underside. Now for the worst part! My wife shows up and they bring out my dog, who was COMPLETELY SHAVED! Ever inch of him from his neck down (excluding his tail). To top it all off, the tail wasn't even brushed out very good and either was his head. I was able to pull small clumps of fur from his head. and when I ran my fingers through his tail I could scrap out fur there too. I wish there was more I could do other then a review because that is ridiculous! I did not agree for you to shave my whole dog! Chief will never be the same and won't be back to this place until that groomer is GONE. read more

I brought a 8 lbs cat with cancer pushing up into both ( 2 ) lungs to where she slowly stopped her jumping ;eating . Now just water to carrier on her own under my desk where it was nice and dark . So her last 2 were water ; carrier; litter box just to pee . So at night I sat carrier in my bedroom with her face facing me . I turned on a small flashlight towards the walls ( not her face ) to check on breathing; moving ? Not sure ; so a skinny 104 lbs lady got down with her hand on my baby's back : please please oh there is a short breathe. The next day I moved up an appointment from Saturday to Friday not sure I baby would make it . The of her appointment this is how they handle a little grey dying cat . First ; a sweet young lady came out asking; do kind if we go ahead and get catheter (;heplock ) started ? I said course not ; and trusted this sweet young lady. Then back this lady comes saying Frankie Sue giving them trouble and will have to be sedated. IF ; I want need anything now's the last to say anything to my baby. I slowly went with her passing exam room 1;2;3;and 4 . All to the back room ; dog kennel room ? To bring cat ( healthy; sick ; dying) ; why ? Now the cat is the problem? The is kennel room for dogs ( ok ) ; my cat didn't walk her push the door open upset the now barking dogs at cat ; so who do we Sedate?? Not cat ; dogs .!! The Vet later called on Saturday; sorry at how they handled Frankie Sue. I ( Vet D. H. ) do not sedate my patients; I'm going to look into this. He said refund for sedation ; I myself think a little too late ? Why does a manager also work in surgery; hire techs I say . This manager to manager the staff ; yes front desk. I don't where or to do ,Second doing both jobs . David called 4/7/21 remains ready for pickup at front desk; oh forget to your refund. He was so nice sorry about Frankie Sue passing. Got to clinic about 1:30 pm. Got the ; but of course no one what I meant by refunds ? So I let the lobby know who peacefully my Frankie Sue got to past .. I brought in my Great Pyrenees to have a small surgery, to have her anal glands removed due to numerous infections. This used to be my primary vet, but now I live closer to Austin. Recently I checked with them & scheduled her surgery here, because the care seemed better - more personal & comforting, and the cost was better (saved about $2,000 - a ridiculous difference). The quoted cost was accurate and there were no surprises. Dr Kays and her Vet Tech, Michelle, did a stellar job and I am a very happy customer. They took wonderful care of my dog, gave us plenty of instructions, and told us what to expect - including long-term risks and called to follow up on her. After about 10 days, she is fully healed now, and is doing really well. I intend on making more trips there on visits to Beaumont. read more

They have 4 vets which is great cause they were able to take my dog quickly on a Friday lunch hour last week when my dog swallowed a bone. They didn't need to take x rays which they could have reasonably done. They just took a look at him and gave him a stool softener and it all cost around $50. Although the facilities look dated, their prices are great compared to my previous vet. I'vethan switched. My yearly visit today was a third of what I was previously paying! read more

It doesn't matter if there was a mistake or they didn't give you a product you paid for, you still have to wait at the end of the list. I've taken all of my fur babies here over the past year. They are very knowledgeable and love each of my children. I have a dog that is scared of his shadow and they are very patient with him and I have a dog who is overly excited and rambunctious and they are great with her too! They all adored my kitty when she came in and were very gentle when giving her shots and such. I had my two new dogs spayed there recently and they did an amazing job getting them in quickly and taking care of them. The incisions were stitched up neatly and the associates even helped me get them out to the car. They are absolutely amazing and I enjoy bringing my babies somewhere I can trust! read more

The ONLY reason I am giving 2 stars instead of 1 is because of the blonde receptionist with the industrial piercing. She is the only thing that went well today. Get to the vets office this morning and they can't find my appointment, can't find my name, my PIGS name, nothing. Surely there aren't that many pigs that get neutered on the daily but they eventually find my name (it's misspelled) and I get checked in. Get in a room and go over paperwork, I ask about pain medicine and the tech looks at me like I'm crazy. They DONT offer pain medicine for pigs. I ask just to make sure and again he tells me no, that I need to ignore that part of the paperwork. That kinda put me off but being as tthere were only two options to get my pig neutered I took what I could get. They then tell me to leave a number for them to call or text me and that he would be done by 4:00. I patiently wait for a call/text and nothing so at 3:35 I call and they tell me that he is ready to be picked up. I drive there and they are BUSY, no problem I don't mind... except the reception area smells like pee so bad. So they call my name and again I ask about pain medicine hoping that there is a chance that he can have some and come to find out.... HE COULD HAVE HAD A PAIN SHOT all along and there was medicine that He could have. So I get the medicine and explain my displeasure because I was informed earlier that they didn't give medicine to pigs. I see that he is in his carrier and I ask has he been in there the whole time..... I dropped him off in the carrier, I pick him up in the carrier, it's a general question. She tells me no, he was allowed to wake up in a kennel, and I make the remark that he is potty trained so hopefully he just held it the whole time and she tells me not to worry that it shouldn't be an issue. I get home to a urine soaked piglet who was lying in his pee die I don't know how long. Long story short, or at least as shortened as I can make it from all of this. Don't waste your time. I would say that the vet was amazing but I never got to meet him. Which is another story, if you are going to perform a surgery on an animal or human I just feel that it's only a common curtesy to introduce yourself and go over the surgery with the patient or guardian. NEVER AGAIN. I'll travel the 1.5 to go to Houston if I need anything else for my pig. read more

Was a visitor in town for a few weeks from out of state. Was recommended in calling this Vet center for grooming. My only request was that I stay with my families animal while grooming. They declined. Which of course is their choice, but also, what's there NOT to see. Bad practice....same as when a physician refuses to allow family members in for consultation. read more

There are many veterinary clinics in our area. My daughter routinely uses one in Groves where her animals have receive good care. However, she was looking for a place where she could have her cats front claws removed by laser as the prices in Houston are extremely high. (They are inside only cats who are damaging furniture woodwork in the house and luggage despite the many cat scratching posts, etc in the home,) Their prices are extremely reasonable, the staff warm and friendly, intake and discharge takes place in 2 steps as they are a busy, large practice. All questions regarding the procedure were answered. They took a complete history of the cats' health including immunizations, flea, tick rxs. The staff explained that they will be staying overnight and asked if she wanted additional pain medicine to be given later which she had did. This is optional. There was a one time cost to having them microchipped. Some businesses require a yearly fee as well. They were in great condition when they were picked up the next afternoon. They were given special litter upon discharge. What I really liked about this practice and have never seen in my many years in SE TX was the emphasis on helping animals who needed homes. There were 4 dogs individually behind clear doors with a cute sign saying, "Ring a bell, win a dog!" The story of the dog and it's adoption cost is clearly marked. There were cats needing homes as well. There is an enormous range of animal foods available, dental brushes, paste, toys. They accept Care Credit credit cards as well as major credit cards, checks and cash. Not only do they care for the normal household pet, I learned that they are well versed in larger animals. I met Dr. Nicholson at the Beaumont Animal Shelter in May 2016 when I was looking for a new pet. I was impressed with his kindness and caring attitude. It was in the package of information given to me that I learned about this clinic, their range of services and prices. I have found that those vets who work in association with rescues and shelters are the most compassionate, caring vets. Their goal is to not only help those clients and owners in their practices but to reduce the number of animals who are put to sleep because of overpopulation. The ride to Beaumont is worth the small amount of time to do so. We were completely thrilled with Dowlen Road Veterinary Center. read more
