Unfortunately, my experience calling the Downey Police Department's non-emergency line was very disappointing. The person who answered the phone seemed dismissive and had an attitude when I was simply trying to report a concern and ask for assistance. When an officer responded, I experienced a similar attitude, which only added more stress to an already frustrating situation. Residents reach out to the police during stressful moments because they need help or guidance. Feeling brushed off or spoken to disrespectfully only makes those situations more difficult. A little patience and professionalism would go a long way in helping the community feel supported. I hope the department takes feedback like this seriously and works toward improving how calls from the public are handled. Where the conflict lies is with the person who they have in charge of answering the phones during the late night shift. I get it...it's at night and oftentimes calls come in from rude individuals. However, there is no reason to be disrespectful. From the 10+ years, I have only had to call twice and that was just recently. These folks deserve a shout out. The officers and technicians are professional and efficient but the big deal is kind. The do not hesitate to call back on a weekend or even a holiday. Today I called to check on a car release for a client and left a message. Ten minutes later Property and Records Technician Tenori called me back. Cheerful, helpful and answered my questions she also wished me a Happy Memorial Day. Dealing with the police can be stressful and uncomfortable, but these folks take the time to be compassionate human beings. The safety in the city's shopping centers, like the one with Planet Fitness and Taco Bell, is a real concern, and the police department's presence feels absent, especially late evenings. Suspicious individuals wander unchecked. The other week, I fell prey to this Hispanic-looking perpetrator in his twenties or thirties, bald or nearly bald-headed, stepped out of his car with a baseball bat, rushed mine, forced the door open, grabbed my shoulder trying to drag me out, likely to rob or worse, and he could be high or wasted. I called today regarding a domestic dispute. My family member was in distress and couldn't call the police due to the situation she was in so I called and when I reached the dispatcher, the woman was so rude. I told her what was happening and that I wanted to see if cops can go check her out and I was going to give her her address. And this lady really told me " so I don't understand what you want themto go for." She was so rude very unprofessional. Lady I hope one day someone doesn't treat you like that when it's your family member in distress. I went to the Downey PD station to request a copy of a previous arrest report for myself and the tall caucasian woman with a crater face that assisted me was so rude & condescending to me for no reason at all. After I told her what I was there for she proceeds to look at me up and down and say "we don't give reports to arrestees," and I responded that I had received a report in the past, and she goes on to say "that was a while ago and maybe things have changed." I am speaking to this woman through this thick ass glass and she says "uhh i can't hear you" so i raised my voice to ask if there is another official document i can be provided with?! this idiot says "yeah well you're gonna have to pay - money" like obviously its going to cost money, there isn't anything free in this life let alone in Downey. I said ok that's fine I'd like to request that document and she handed me a form to sign and I gave her my debit card. This woman was so unpleasant to deal with that I did not return to pick up the document & they ended up mailing it. eee. really wish I didnt have to do this. I do advocate for Police and Military. I will file a complaint and I will ask around for a lawyer. Firstly I was attacked in my own house by my brother. I live in a part of the house that is blocked by the other access. It is essentially a duplex. We fought for a few seconds but I have been dealing with pain from a work injury and previous medical conditions. I have made a pact with myself to no longer fight. I had a pocket knife that I always carry with me. When we were brawling it fell from my back pocket. I was able to push him off of me I had to use a knife to ask my brother to leave. He attacked again so I had to show I would defend myself but I never struck him. He stubbled out the house and says "Imma call the cops" a few minutes go by and I have gathered my things to go to do laudry. (I didnt think much because weve fist fought most our life and yes my mother and step brother have had to pull him off of me. Im older but Shorter and Way less weight. 5'6 145 lbs. he is 5'10 almost 300 pounds) As Im placing the things in my car, my brother says dont go no where the police are coming. Right in the moment a was flashed by light from down the street. I walk over to them with hands up because i know police can shoot you for just about anything. and with this call i can imagine they were on alert for an attack. but i had defended myself. I was detained immediately. my brother though nothing. we talked seperate becasue i walked to the corner to talk to police. I said my story but because he was able to show his chirt was ripped (from my pushing him off. and a cut on his face from my headbutt when he pushed my door in after he had been screaming at me for a minute. I had decided to close the door seeing this wasnt going to go anywhere. he pushed door in and i headbutt him. it was just a reaction to someone with anger and hate in their voice that i was in fear. They said that i was being arrested and that an officer would tell me my charges at the station. At the station I tried to explain that i would like to see a doctor after being struck to the head and body. The sergant told me that it would not help against the felony charge that was placed against me. I said I am injuried from work and from this fight now. three times i was told this and every time i said i needed to see a doctor. I could even hear the Officer saying he didnt want to take me. before going to the hospital i was forced to sign papers saying why i was there and that I got my three phone calls. I was never able to call my family to tell them where i was or was going to go. when forced to sign the paper I said to officer that I never got even one call and i would not sign this paper. the officer instructed me tthat i would get three calls after the hospital. having someone sign anything after they have been concussed should be a crime in itself. Officer Mendoza took me after an officer had let me out my cell. While making our way to his cruiser he roughly was pushing me around. even pushing me into the other cruiser causing the right mirror to fold in. He kept sliding me against the other cuiser until we got to the back door. even after telling them that my shoulder was hurting i was still in tight handcuffs behind causing more pain and numbing. I dont know how to exlpain this in words but he placed me in crusier and was purposefully hitting me with the seatbelt as if it was hard for him to put in on. while driving over to the hospital, he was speeding so badly that I could tell this was by accident. I was pushed against the backwindow. sliding in the back due to the quick turning . while there at the hospital we were talking. Mendoza and I. I forgot what exactly was said to lead up to officer Mendoza saying and I quote "you should have won that fight." in some smart ass way. I exclaimed in a broad voice "that is my brother!" "and this was self defence". a fight is when two parties agree to the get down. and this was insulting being that this was my brother whom i love deeply and that it was self defense. also that it came from some punk officer who has eyes of someone trying for vengence and the spirit of a gardener. Once we got back from the hospital I was left in cruiser for several minutes. then excorted by the officer who said id get my calls once i got back. I asked for my calls and he said we dont give calls to felons or something along those lines. The paper stated that I could get calls 1 to 4 hours after incarceration. I could not talk to family until I was processed by county at twin towers. my Mother was sick from worrying about me. I dont know what else i can say. Its been a couple days since I was released from county. charges were dropped. Gee wonder why. Im going to file a complaint and also look into the legalities. Losing more and more trust in our legal system yearly. read more

Beware and don't trust this police dept. !! When I first got a call from a detective that my stolen car was recovered, I was very happy. The detective sounded nice on the phone, told me they are investigating the situation/the car and that it will take a few weeks due to being short staffed during COVID. He assured me that all the vehicle towing fees will be covered and I trusted him. I kept calling each week to check on the status but they were still investigating and could not release the vehicle. Finally after a month I checked in once again telling them I would like to go see the vehicle and very quickly the detective called back and said it was cleared for release. So that same day I went to the Downey police dept. to get the release, they told me that the detective took 5 days off the bill but for the rest of the month that the vehicle was towed, I would have to pay for it. I said, that's not what the detective said on the phone and asked to see him in person. They lied and said it was his day off. I refused to leave until this was resolved and all of a sudden the detective comes out (obviously he was there the whole time) and his tune was totally changed from when I spoke to him on the phone. He told me I heard him wrong on the phone and that he never said all the fees would be covered, he only said this and this. And he suggested I talk to the towing company, tell them the situation and they will probably not charge much. He kept saying "Oh it won't be that much" Well it turns out the towing bill was $2,000! And that the DPP and the towing company Titan Transportation Inc. worked together to screw me over. How they live with themselves knowing that they are screwing over victims of theft, is beyond me. read more

I don't live in the nice "million dollar home" side of Downey but I like to consider it average. Like many residents here you've probably noticed that crime is on the rise. Stuff like car break-ins, assault and vandalism is growing. Just read the crime reports on the Downey Patriot and you'll see that it's getting worst and worst. Well a couple of days ago I was a victim of a crime, my car was broken into and the assholes took a good amount of stuff including my frickin license plate sticker, you know, the colorful one with the year on it. Well I was so pissed that my car was broken into that I didn't even notice it missing. Everything else was reported and the PD sent someone to do a report, no complaints here. Fast forward to today, I get pulled over by previously mentioned officer A-Hole for... you guessed it... not having a sticker. I was surprised and shocked. I told him that my car was just broken into and that the sticker must've been stolen too. I had my valid registration, insurance and license ready and in line. I figured that he would let me off with a warning, I even told him I would get it fixed right away. Well, officer A-Hole took the liberty of still writing me a ticket for not having my tags. Thanks a lot you douche, the public pays you to protect the innocent and even after I explain to you that I was just a victim of a crime in the city that you swore to protect you end up pouring salt on the victims wounds. This pisses me off so much that I can't even explain it. Sure, I can fight the ticket and more than likely win but why go through all that fucking trouble when officer douche could've just let me go with a warning. How are you going to harass a mother (my wife) who just picked up our two kids from daycare after a long day at work by giving her a dumb $17 fix it ticket for the back break light when she was 1 block away from home? Times must be tough if they need money that bad. We have a newer car and would have not known the back light is out unless someone told us. He could have simply gave her a warning especially since she was so close to being home but instead chose to be rigid about it. We both work hard, own a home in Downey so we pay our fair share in taxes for this city. With so many jack holes zooming around this neighborhood in their muscle cars and other more serious crimes that needs real police attention, I recommend they focus on that rather than a $17 fix it ticket. This is more annoying than anything and inconvenient since I have to take time out of work to resolve at the court and pay another $25 processing fee there. Go do some real police work. I think waiting four months for an apology from the department is fair enough before moving on with a review. I started with the proper chain of command in filling my complaint, and hoping if nothing else, I would get some sort of feedback on this "fix it ticket" ($1105.00) that I felt was unjust in writing. These comments come from a retired Lieutenant from the Los Angeles Sheriff Department and would hope that my remarks are taken in a positive direction as to learn, by your mistakes. Stopped by two Downey Police officers based on the fact that my rear license plate was black, and this makes it a "non-reflector plate". Non reflector plates are LEGAL, as I explained to the trainee that wrote me a ticket. Shame on her TO for allowing her to write fellow law enforcement a fix it ticket, even though prior to writing the ticket, I had identified myself. Originally it was white, than painted black to match the black plates you can buy from DMV. My biggest complaint was her DISRESPECT to me. Officer, wear your uniform and badge with honor, pride, and respect for the entire public. If this career does not consist of that, do your fellow officers and the department you represent a favor, seek a different job. I told the officer they where last seen in the truck of my car before some body work a year ago in North Hollywood. The Garage manager was even willing to talk to the Downey Police and explain he could not locate the box he removed from the trunk to do the repairs. He told me he could not take a report. Told me to got to Hollywood Police This sounded strange to me so I called Hollywood LAPD was told that Downey could take the report but he could transfer me to North Hollywood for a telephone report. Thanks to the competency of the LAPD the police report was filed by North Hollywood police (by phone) and solved the problem. Downey Police wanted me to investigate the missing plates. Yes, these guys are as bad as the reviews sound. Called for a mental health crisis for someone in my family and they did nothing. They couldn't answer any of my questions regarding their "criteria" to do something. They were outrageously rude, with no sense of empathy or care. My mom had to walk back into the house where there was danger, and I said one of them should have walked with her. They said they didn't want to put themselves "at risk." Ummmmm isn't that your job!? To protect? Bunch of babies with badges. And to top it all off when they did decide to walk to the house, they said "better tie up those dogs, we don't want to euthanize them." Drunk driver crashed into our property they took 30 min to come the driver took off on foot and reported his car stolen so there was nothing we could do about it. My brother in laws car has been hit twice and my neighbors once all hit and runs police never come on time and one time blamed my brother in law saying his car is too dark to see and that's why they hit it and he shouldn't park it there. i am trying to report my car been taken illegally by the person i trusted to sell it. i signed a blank pink slip and the title because i am leaving back in my country. It has been 3 weeks now and no reply from that person, to where my car was brought or is it being sold. i am not after the sale, i only want to make sure my name is cleared if anything happens to the said car. We tried contacting Downey PD to report the incident but require me to secure a letter to be submitted to them with notary from our country.
