Is it weird to write a review for a small town gas station? Maybe, but I find this gas station to be pretty important on a road trip through Colorado. Luckily you won't miss it as it's right on 149 as you pass through Creede. This is the only gas station between South Fork (about 20 miles away) and Lake City (just over 50 miles away), you have to stop and top off here.
The lot is tiny and crowded, there are only four uncovered pumps and though there is a small parking area off to the side for those waiting or needing to go inside, with the traffic coming from each direction, it's not large enough for comfort. Do not be surprised if you have to circle the block a time or two before finding a spot to pull in to. Only two of the four pumps take credit cards, so you may need to go inside to pay.
The store itself has a lot of personality. It's your normal small town gas station with a small array of automotive supplies, travel items and snacks with coolers of drinks and beers and some hot snacks. They also have a crafty little corner that has souvenirs and books that are basically a rotating library (those are really common in these parts, but not in gas stations). It's a good stop for knick knacks!
People are nice here, I normally see the same lady here, though I think I've seen a gentleman two or three times. They are super friendly and attentive.
This is not a 24 hour operation, if you roll in at 9pm you aren't going to be able to run inside to use the restroom and get a Gatorade. There is a public restroom at the edge of town, but nothing is open late here so be prepared with drinks and snacks if you aren't arriving during business hours.
The prices are pretty high, which is common for these areas. We were road tripping through a lot of areas this summer and this was not the only place we saw gas at $2.49 a gallon, but that price was only seen in smaller towns while other places were 20 to 40 cents less per gallon- none of these places are close enough to skip the trip here though, so don't bother. We got a quart of oil on our way out and we regretted it as it was $8 and we ended up not needing it before getting to some major cities.
This is one of the few places in Creede open year round and not just during the summer months. Prices may be high, but it's the law of supply and demand and they are able to provide a lot of items you may need.
If you are visiting outside of May to September, be wary of the weather and whether or not they will have enough gas. I've heard this on many visits, that even in the summer they could run out because of how far the gas trucks have to travel, but have never seen it be a problem during the summer.
Solid place with great service and plenty to check out! read more
