Love, love this gem in downtown. Abundance of healthy, niche brands packed into this small space. The bunk section is a must stop! I bought pearled jasmine tea which was so hard to find anywhere close by. I also stopped at the deli counter for their delectable soups (curried carrot ginger soup). The salad bar and hot food bar are great options if you need a quick bite on the go. This is the closest to a Whole Foods in central Wisconsin without the hefty price tag! This small business is more focused on policing customers for masks then they are actually doing business! I was told they did not want my business because I was not wearing a mask. Last I checked people with asthma are not required to wear a mask. I will never return here again. I would rather shop at the big box stores then be hassled for something as petty as a mask. read more

T.H. is right when she or he says quaint. It's like a step back in time with a organic and yuppie twist. Downtown Grocery also has a little deli. It reminds me of some of the little stores that used to abound in bigger metropolitan areas like Minneapolis. The main reason that I have been in there is to get one of their prepared box meals to take to a summer concert on the 400 Block. Very good; an excellent alternative to fast food. read more

Huge fan. I love their amount of local items and considering their size, etc - I'm always impressed by those prices. For a small grocer, I do not find most of their stuff to be horribly overpriced at all. I love that they carry a decent variety of frozen local meats and it's truly delicious and great quality! They have an excellent bulk spice area which also includes a variety of bulk teas, great! What does happen to be quite overpriced are their can goods, noodles, etc. Which, well, is what it is, they most likely carry a small inventory of really great quality items and well, prices will reflect that. They've recently begun to expand and it looks great in there. I'm a big huge fan of this place and always look forward to finding a reason to head on over! read more

I've been involved with cooperatives and health food stores all my adult life. I must say that the Downtown Grocery is a class act. A delightful and welcome place for vegetarians. A great store to buy your groceries and produce in a tidy and friendly establishment. This store features organic and local foods. There are healthy snacks; and a great salad and soup bar. The wine selections are always tempting. This time I had an egg salad sandwich and a bowl of potato soup. Both were very good. As a frequent traveler to Wausau, I always liked going to have a nosh at this place. Went there a couple of years ago; and it had burned. The place was gutted. I was sad. But huzzah, they have rebuilt and the place is better than ever. There is a nice little coffee and tea store on the north side of the building. We find the staff to be very friendly and helpful. This is a feel good store that emits a positive vibe and come-hither aromas. I'm always appreciative of fresh and simple and good for you. The Downtown Grocery checks all of my boxes on what I look for when I want groceries or something wholesome to eat. Food should taste good, feel good, and be good for you. Downtown Grocery is a quaint little grocery that features organic foods, produce and prepared foods. Much of the produce comes from an organic farm that one of the owners maintains and runs. They also have a nice little salad bar that has interesting ingredients like seaweed salad. Each day they also have a selection of hot foods that are very good. A nice surprise is their selection of wines and beers that are very reasonably priced. It's locally owned and operated which is great. While the prices aren't the cheapest in the city, they are competitive. read more

Always a fan of local organic stores and this is one of my faves! They've got everything you'd expect and more - homemade wraps, sandwiches, desserts, pastas, and more. The hot lunch items are always vegetarian and delicious. Went here for a lunch on a Sunday and had fantastic beet and goat cheese side dish, and a sweet potato bake that had some kind of savory nut crust on it. Excellent food!
