DP Martial Arts Academy is hands down an absolute great place for people of all ages. My son attends Taekwondo and Brazilian Jujitsu and I have participated in the Get Fit class. All of the staff and owner are beyond what you could ask for for your child. They teach martial arts and life lessons. DP Martial Arts Academy is a school that offers a variety of programs for children and adults. I joined as a student in the core-kickboxing program. It is the perfect (and intense) workout to stay in shape, not to mention it's fun and the class is never the same. This is the first workout class where I am not staring at the clock and dreading that I came out. I always feel better leaving. Then there is the amazing staff at DP Martial Arts Academy that truly make you feel apart of their family. They greet you with warm hellos, teach you the respect and hard work that comes along with martial arts, and assist you in all aspects of your work out. Master Joey, Master Doug, Master Don, and Master Austin have all been a pleasure to work with; it is clear they are passionate about their academy as it comes across in their teaching. I love going to class on Saturday mornings because I get to see the children perform martial arts at the same time as my class. I started coming here through a deal I got on Groupon. The place is awesome! The trainers and the staff are super nice and supportive! The people you train with are just as motivating and accepting. I love coming here and working out.. You wake up the next morning and your entire body is in pain, but the best kind of pain!!! Highly recommend going here if you're trying to lose weight or stay in shape... This place is clean, supportive and all around an excellent place to workout AND learn new techniques! I'm a serial Groupon hopper so I though DP Martial Arts would be just another experience to add to the long list of trial period lessons I've taken, but even before my trial period ended, they had me hooked. Now I'm approaching my third month of lessons and still excited to go to class each week. From the get-go, you feel welcomed and comfortable. The masters all go out of their way to remember names and get to know you, and they ensure that all the students show each other that same respect. The students themselves are all humble and try to look out for each other. Even if an instructor isn't around, you'll hear and see students correcting form or giving advice (which is 10x cuter if you arrive early and watch the younger martial arts student helping each other out!). Krav Maga is the first martial arts class I've ever taken and I love the feeling of growing stronger while being trained in an extremely useful discipline. The masters show you just how applicable the moves are in real life situations while making sure all our movements are controlled so we're not hurting each other. You can tell that they're really invested in your progress. Overall, great environment, fun workout, amazing experience! read more

This is coming from a former instructor and also 2nd degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do. From an instructor's perspective, if you want your kid to be babysat, build false confidence by getting participation awards, this is not the place for them. The classes here are instructed by masters who take the training seriously while also putting in a healthy dose of fun. They make sure that the students are engaged and understand that they have to earn the level that they are working towards. What was most encouraging was hearing that not everyone gets to the tests if the master feels they are not ready. The students learn they have to work for and qualify for the next level. In addition, the students here get to learn acrobatics and weapons training in a controlled safe environment with highly-qualified instructors, which keeps classes fun and gives the students new goals to aim for. From a student's perspective, having obtained a second-degree black belt, I started taking krav maga classes. Picking up the techniques were not difficult with my martial arts background; however, understanding the foundations of a new system was more difficult. Master Doug clarifies and ingrains the foundations in all that is taught. In doing so, he makes it very practical and emphasizes focusing on the permutations for real life applications. He emphasizes technique over speed and encourages students to take their time to learn the technique properly and calls people out if they are doing something wrong because he understands bad habits die hard so it is important to start off right. Overall, if you want to learn and mature through the discipline of training and working through techniques to hone and refine your character, this is the place to be. If you want to keep your ego and get participation awards, this is not the place for you. read more

My son has been a student at DPMA for 7 years and in that time his self-confidence, self-esteem, teamwork skills, and leadership skills have soared because of the training and standards set by Master Doug and modeled by his exemplary team of hard-working and dedicated martial arts professionals. Found this through groupon and had to sign up before my trial classes were even over. Been taking Krav Maga classes for 4 months now, and have also tried a few kickboxing & Brazilian Jiu Jitsu classes. Every instructor - including Master Doug, Don, Master Austin - have always wanted to make sure we understand and execute techniques the right way - they know what they're doing. You also see this when class timings overlap before your class and you see different groups mastering other arts - the instructors are so skilled and I trust them. (As for the other classes the best to see is the black belt club for little kids. It's the cutest, yet fiercest thing to watch!) Coming to class is the highlight of my week because there's such a positive atmosphere where everyone is welcoming and encourages you to push yourself and grow. Everyone's respectful of each other and is there to actually learn - which is why the BEST part is there is no babying-around. It is also very clean, spacious and well-equipped. If you want to truly learn any art Master Doug's academy teaches, be ready to train and/or get an awesome workout! I recommend this place hands down. read more

Both of my sons have been enrolled in DPMA from when they were 5 years old. They are now 12 and 15 and they are amazing young men. I believe that the 5 tenants, the loving staff, the mental and physical training and discipline has had a profound impact on their development. Also, recently I decided to join their 6 week Get Fit Challenge. I didn't know what to expect when beginning but Master Doug told me that I am "going to LOVE it!" Well, he was right!! Even though I had been maintaining an active lifestyle over the course of the past year plus during the pandemic, I was a bit bored and didn't feel nearly as strong as I wanted to feel. Well that has all changed and now I feel strong, excited to continue as a student and am so happy that I signed up. After I posted this review I noticed that the owner responded on google reviews. I will address his untruthful comments here. 1. He said that he has been 'trying to...explain to me for 2 weeks why they asked me to wait just 2 months' and that I 'continually refuse to listen and accept'. This is a lie. I have no idea what this owner is talking about. As stated in my original review, I received ONE phone call stating that my child should come back when he is 4.5 years old. This statement about explaining to me for two weeks is a fantasy. I also did not 'refuse to listen and accept anything'. I merely asked for a simple call back from the owner so that I could get an explanation as to how the determination was made. 2. The owner stated in his response '. IT is NOT part of our evaluation for a potential student of his age to participate in the group classes right away. This was explained to you several times prior to the trial and the day of. Yet, you were unrelenting and kept insisting that he join the class immediately. You did not respect our policies and procedure, which are present to protect your son, as well as the rest of our students.' Another lie. When I called, I was told my child would have an evaluation. I was not 'unrelenting' about anything, nor did I 'insist that my child should join the class'. Obviously there is some delusion about what JP and I discussed over the phone. It really wasn't that serious. I had no reason to be desperate for my child to participate in a Taekwondo class. In fact, when we came for the evaluation, my child DID NOT participate in the class at all. He was taken to the side, where he carried out Taekwondo moves with one of the instructors. This is an unfortunate situation that could have been avoided with clarity from JP and the owner Doug from the beginning. When I first called, JP could have simply informed me that we should wait and come for an evaluation when my child was 4 and a half years old, instead of allowing me to waste my family's time. I have spoken to several other martial arts schools which have clear policies regarding the admission of young students. I have not had a single issue with any other school, because they have told me clearly the age at which students can be admitted to the school. None of them have encouraged me to bring in my child for a trial class, only to tell me that he's too young to enroll. Thankfully, my child is now happily enrolled in a Taekwondo school in the area. read more

I take Krav Maga classes at DP Martial Arts Academy at their Fort Lee location and have to say that this class is AMAZING! It doesn't just teach me practical self defense skills, it makes me feel stronger and more confident, especially when I am outside by myself or with my toddler. You know you found the perfect place if your kids can't wait until the next class! The staff here is amazing - they ALL strive to KNOW your children! If they forget your child's name, they immediately do 5 push ups! How fun is that! The kids are totally engaged...they don't even realize they are doing 10 crunches, 10 push ups and held a plank for 30 seconds! (Something most adults can't even do...present company included!) While all these things are great, I can't say enough about the staff and their dedication to our children. I have seen countless number of times their unconditional effort to encourage and support our children in their pursuit of excellence. They never give up on the children which in turn encourages our guys never to give up on themselves. It's not just a great physical training ground, it's a great 'life' training ground. DPMA is a fantastic martial arts school. The instructors are amazingly talented. Master Doug, owner and instructor, has been teaching for years. He taught my son many years ago and now he's teaching me Krav Maga. I've been attending his school for over a year and it's been a life changing experience. DPMA will give you confidence in self defense, but also the understanding that it's always best to avoid a difficult situation in the first place. I have always wanted to learn self defense but never had time to start when I was younger. Being over 40 and out of shape, I was pretty concern that I would be getting in over my head if I started now. It has been 3 weeks since I signed up for Krav Maga and all I can say is that I really love it and look forward to attending each class even if the workouts could be tough at times. The classes are usually attended by students at various levels. At first, I was wary that jumping into a class where people already knew what they were doing would be totally counter productive for me since I was starting at zero. However, I was completely wrong. Everyone helps each other out and so you are actually getting personal attention and guidance all of the time whenever you need it. This really makes learning so much more efficient. Everyone - staff and students, are friendly and down to earth. You really feel welcome there like one big family but without any drama. Lastly, Chief Master Doug, Master Austin, and teacher Joe are your ideal instructors. They are able to explain and demonstrate the techniques pretty effectively so that you know exactly what you are doing and why you are doing it. They offer lots of encouragement but without being pushy or intimidating. You basically train to the best of your ability and strive to improve with each class. I decided to join the 6 week fitness challenge a few weeks ago. I'll be honest with you, I was petrified, but I knew I needed a change. I had 3 kids in a 4 year span and had not exercised since the birth of my first. To say I was out of shape is an understatement!!! I walked into my first class not knowing what to expect, and walked out knowing (after only 1 hour) that I absolutely made the right decision to join! Master Doug, along with several other trainers, are simply amazing! They are motivating & challenging, all while being funny, kind, and helpful! I was also impressed with how clean the facility was. I have only completed a few classes and already feel a change in my endurance & strength. I've even lost a few pounds!! Regardless of how "fit" you are, I highly recommend this class! My daughter has been attending for a year & the classes have helped improve her coordination skills, concentration, focus and confidence while still establishing a friendly but structured atmosphere. The best part of their program is how they incorporate teaching values to their students stressing the importance of respect, commitment & loyalty. Parking may be tight as it shares a lot with the skating rink & has tight spaces especially for vans & SUV's but there are many places to park along side roads.
