But when he needs to turn up the heat and step in swiftly, he has no reservations. He most recently earned hero status in my eyes by the way he handled my 4-year old's very high fever. He found space in his schedule to see us early, and after examining my son ordered that he get a blood test and radio immediately to see if he had an infection causing the fever. It was the first time he responded with such urgency which was both reassuring and terrifying since he's usually very laid back and un-alarmist. Shows that he knows when a situation is urgent or not.

It took some time to get an appointment with her, but once we did she was everything we had hoped for. Not only did she explain very carefully the reasons why we had to take certain tests, the delays between them, she also accompanied us along the over the phone and via email to be sure that we had all of the info and assistance we needed to make a final conclusion about his situation, which thankfully was not an allergy at all! She is also affiliated with the hospital trousseau so she can coordinate a spot there on your behalf if you need to do any tests there, as we did. Even though she's a specialist she still practices very reasonable rates (45E a visit) and has a sign on her door that says that she has the right to lower or waive her fee if she so desired. Can you imagine a doctor in american insist on his or her right to waive a consultation fee?! Just a reminder how exceptional the French health care system is.

I moved to Paris for a few years in the late 1990s and on my first visit with Dr. Steinmetzer, for some minor complaint, he diagnosed me with coronary artery disease, insisting that I have tests right away to prove it, even though I was in complete denial, saying that I "felt fine." My former internist in the U.S., whom I had seen regularly for the previous 20 years, had totally missed my heart problems. Dr. Steinmetzer treated me medically for three years, then told me it was time for heart surgery. I went back to the U.S. and 10 days later I had an emergency FIVE-ARTERY bypass. Unlike the other midwives that I came across, Johanna caught my eye with her delightfully titled "gymnastique sensorielle perinatale" technique. Hmmm, what the hell is that? I had to know. I called her up to find out more about it. The moment I started chatting with her I was hooked. She was so sweet and attentive and asked all of the right questions, about my previous birth, what drew me to her, what my expectations were for my second birth, etc. Already I loved her! Over the course of the next couple of months Johanna worked with me on preparing me for the big day. The technique she practices is designed to give you the tools to manage your pain during childbirth by mastering two simple movements (convergence and divergence) that echo the same positions that babies make in utero. Before working with Johanna I had absolutely no intention of giving birth without meds. Not on my bucket list, no thank you! Even the thought of a medicine free birth freaked me out to no end. Johanna never put any pressure on me to go that route, but over the time we worked together, she instilled so much confidence in my ability to handle anything that might come my way that I felt up for the challenge! So on the d-day when I got to the clinique after several hours of contractions I bravely told the staff that I wanted to try this thing without an epidural. They joked with me, telling me to come back to them when I couldn't bear it anymore. Even my DR tried to get me to give in after 10 hours of contractions with not much change in my cervix. Over the course of it all, Johanna was coaching me along via text, telling me to follow my instincts, insist on taking a bath, not to give in to my DR's wishes to induce labor if I did't want it. After the birth she came over to check on me and the baby and started looking after both of us for different things. I wound up getting mastitis twice which she helped me heal with homeopathic remedies; she helped set me up for breastfeeding success after noticing that my son was tongue tied (which made it extremely painful to nurse), even sending me encouraging words at 11pm on one of the darkest nights of my life when I was ready to give up from so much pain; she helped get my coccyx back in place after the tiring birth. Bref, she was exceptional! And so generous with her time as she frequently consulted via text late at night or over the weekend if something came up. I can't say enough good about this woman. Wise, patient, nurturing, generous, attentive, healing -- never have I met someone who so perfectly embodies the profession that they practice.

I made an appointment and only waited about 5-10 minutes after arriving to proceed with my ultrasound. One of the things that I appreciated is that the doctor was professional and I did not at all have the impression that he was imcompetent. He asked pertinent questions and genuinely cared. The waiting room was also very large and beautiful. The entryway was impressive with big wooden staircase. I felt like I was being welcomed into someone's home and not really a doctor's office. After the ultrasound of my thyroid, I only waited another 5 minutes for my results and photos. The secretary was very curteous, as well, when she handed them to me and took care of my payment.
