So I've tried quite a few therapists and interventions and it wasn't until working with the wonderful people at Dr. Kate Truitt & Associates that I really felt that emotional healing was possible and that I could start to see the light at the end of the tunnel following decades long depression. Havening techniques and other techniques have helped me (someone who defaults to over-intellectualizing) get out of my head and into my body which I've found is imperative for healing emotional trauma. With all that said I'm really here to share my experience with the Neurofeedback training done with Rebecca Turner. Having done so much healing and reprocessing through talk therapy, I still felt that my thought patterns were like a hose turned all the way up, whipping around, unable to catch, and control, soaking everyone around me. The initial brain mapping (which is done first to know what areas of the brain to target for training) reflected with tangible data what I was experiencing inside. Ms. Turner described it to me like "your two hemispheres are yelling at each other" which turned out to be one of the most validating things my brain has ever heard about itself. The neurofeedback training process itself is not as complicated and/or intimidating as the name sounds. If one is doing eyes open training, you essentially attach some small sensors to your head using a conductive goop and watch a tv show while the screen brightens and dims in response to the information collected by the sensors and neurofeedback program. For "eyes closed" training, you listen to lyric-less music while the music adjusts the volume to help train your brain. And it all works. I feel good about myself. Shame is now a passing emotion instead of a state of being. Rumination is down ten-fold as my hemispheres aren't "yelling at each other". My thoughts and feelings don't control me as much and/or send my on a downward spiral. If you are someone who feels your emotions are often become too much for you to handle that even standard therapy couldn't alone help, might I suggest neurofeedback? read more

This review is long over due and well deserved. I came to this team needing help with focus and what I've come to learn are stress related migraines. In order to help, Rebecca Turner, LMFT suggested I try Neurofeedback, also known as brain training. I can't explain fully how transformational this has been for me. My migraines have decreased significantly, and my focus at work has improved tremendously. I was looking for an approach that was non-invasive and didn't require taking any substances. For those looking to improve their mental performance but want to do so in a safe and healthy way, this is it. Dr. Truitt and her knowledgable team provided simple to understand explanations of the work we were about to do, the brain related science behind it, and set great expectations for what I should see over time. I'm upset that I haven't written this earlier. As cliche as it sounds, Shannon and Dr. Truitt's team truly changed my life, and I'm sure they've saved my life in more ways than I'll ever know. The havening technique is profound, their care is so apparent, and it's here that I truly learned how important mental and emotional health is. As if this review ain't sappy enough, I honestly thank God for putting Shannon in my life. About my care - I suffer from developmental trauma and substance abuse, amongst 100 other ailments. The havening technique has brought to light so many hidden/suppressed subconscious memories that I can't number the amount of "aha" moments I've had remembering them, understanding their affects, and trying to heal from them. It really works for me. I know the sessions are not cheap relative to other therapies, but you really get what you pay for here. And with all the gym, shakes, and dieting money we blow on our physical health, you learn that mental/emotional health needs that kind of attention too, if not more. I cannot recommend Dr. Kate Truitt and Associates enough. For my entire life, I've thought that I didn't need therapy and that therapy wasn't for me. Simply put, Dr. Truitt is an excellent therapist. Life kicked me in the ass, and I needed A LOT of help. I have had bad experiences in the past with therapists, but as soon as I met with her, her warmth and compassion broke any misgivings and protestations I initially had. She helped me through one of the most difficult times in my life - and for that I am eternally grateful. She is passionate about what she does and it shows. While the Havening technique is a little offbeat, it works. I am a cynic at heart, and y'know what, when it comes to your mental health, you have to be open minded. She is not a therapist that simply sits there and listens to you rant, interjecting with "but how does that make you FEEL?" She is there as a guide for you to come to your own conclusions about the various issues that haunt you. She cares. She truly does. She will guide you down the path to the person you should be, without all of the heavy weight of the past weighing you down. But you've got to work for it. I worked with Dr. Truitt as my primary therapist at an outpatient eating disorders clinic for approximately one year. In the time I spent working with her I was able to make immense progress in my recovery from bulimia, depression, and anxiety. Dr. Truitt uses different types of therapies, but primarily focuses on CBT. I greatly appreciated her focus on the cognitive part of recovery, as she was able to help me understand more about my eating disorder and why it developed. This is something that no other therapist had been able to help me with in the past. Dr. Truitt reintroduced me to my younger self and walked alongside me as I worked to heal my inner child. She uses innovative therapeutic techniques that did more for me than all the years of talk therapy I've been through. If you are reading this review, you're doing just what I did to find Dr. Kate Truitt. It's no exaggeration to say that she has changed my life for the better. In the summer of 2017 I had some triggering events occur in my life which brought back major PTSD I thought I had overcome via a decade of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. Even though I had done a lot of work on myself, and knew the "WHYS " of my thought patterns and behaviors, traditional CBT didn't help when stressful, triggering events would occur - my body would go back into fight or flight mode, and depressive/anxious thoughts would send me spiraling. Cut to the event in 2017 that had me in a panic, I thought to myself that I needed to find help because I was now a mom with a happy life and a family and didn't want to destroy that because of unresolved wounds. As I often do, I turned to Yelp to see if I could find a therapist and I found Dr. Truitt. Dr. Truitt specializes in healing women who have suffered trauma, particularly during childhood and adolescence. She uses a very gentle and beautiful technique called Havening that has helped me to not only heal my wounds but to move forward and gain more power and agency over my life. Havening is revolutionary because it is SO effective and can be taught to the patient and implemented into your daily life, much like meditation. I saw Dr. Truitt for about a year (bi-weekly, then monthly) and now I just check in with her when I need some tuning up. I saw Jason Carter and I must say, I stuck around for a while but really saw no real changes. Each week I was told you I am going to give you the tools you need, but instead the time would pass and no real action plan was established. It seems like this practice works for many but it was not the right fit. I eventually did switch and it was there that we were able to pinpoint adult ADHD. I do realized adult ADHD and anxiety are very similar but after weeks and weeks of talking, I wish this was something he could have guided me through. read more

She was very effective at getting me to a place of functioning again and giving me great tools I could take with me to use anytime I needed them. I also felt really safe and heard by Dr. Truitt. I'm historically not a big believer in therapy nor even review sites. Sitting at the airport today I realized I wouldn't have been able to sit in a crowded place if it wasn't for her help so I'm writing her a review. I was a survivor of shooting at the Route 91 Harvest musical festival in Oct of last year. Afterwards I couldn't in crowded places and was feeling very crazy trying to live my normal life - I couldn't. A friend of mine, a cop, in LA mentioned Dr. Truitt's work to me, that it had helped his wife. I drove to LA to see her, again crowds and airports so I couldn't fly. We did two "intensives" in two days using her neuroscience techniques. I'm fine now. Sitting in an airport! Back to my normal life. It didn't feel like "therapy" but like treatment. I met Dr. Truitt through a recommendation a year ago. Here is my life-saving (literally) experience with her: I am not a drug abuser but I did, at one point, accidentally take acid at a party. Turned out to be far too much dosage. I was drooling on the floor for 10 hours, screaming on the top of my lungs while everyone worried if they should call an ambulance. Eventually I realized none of it was real a day later, and collected myself. Yet, I felt disconnected from my body, and life felt like an illusion. Suicidal thoughts (totally out of character for me, as I had never thought of it before) came about simply because I thought life was a video game. Simply a tv-screen in front of our eyeballs, and depth was non-existent. Illusion of choice, life, etc. I was an observer in my own head, and this life was a lie. It created intense panic, insane paranoia, insane stress, and my heart rate was at a constant high. Sleep would come only if I abused my body with exercise and over-eating so much that I would be exhausted and also have a food-come, enough to knock me out. I refused to take any new drugs since I knew that a drug was what had done this to me. A week passed, two weeks, then three. I was sleeping at about an hour a night, when my body was fully exhausted. once the hour was in, I'd be jarred awake and feeling disconnected from my mind and body once again. Suicidal thoughts ensued "why not end this? if it's just an illusion? Why not walk out the door and wake up?" Again, it had NOTHING to do with depression or childhood problems. It was an entirely different psychological ballpark. I was convinced that my terrible acid trip who's effects were now still in full effect two months later, would never ever end. It was so unbearable that I knew I could not go on like this anymore and seriously needed good, professional, expert help. I tried some other psychologists who could not help me whatsoever. They simply did not understand the problem. They kept trying to diagnose me with childhood issues, and weekly meetings led to them forgetting what we talked about the previous week. They did not understand that I was 100% fine just a few weeks before. Every meeting with them was "catchup". "Oh, i'm sorry, what did we talk about last week? can you walk me through again"? "Do you think it's because of your mother's abuse as a child? let's talk about that". They would all constantly try to diagnose me with MORE problems, rather than listening to the actual problem I already had. I figured it was because mental health is harder to self diagnose and if someone tells you that you are crazy, you aren't sure if you are. I felt, on my journey to find an actual caring psychologist, that most are simply trying to peddle you classic textbook psychology to make sure you come in for a lifetime of sessions to keep them employed. But not Dr. Truitt! HERE, I FOUND DR. TRUITT. This was a momentous, life-changing and life-saving event that really changed a person's life. She had a huge impact that without her existence, things might have gone seriously seriously wrong. I found Dr. Truitt online and called her office. I got a hold of her quickly and setup an appointment and she asked me the problem right then and there. She quickly walked me through breathing steps, and stayed on the phone for a half hour as she could sense how dangerously urgent this was. Told me everything I needed to hear temporarily between then and the meeting. That this was fine, that people who have done way worse are all good now. That it isn't permanent. That night, a 30 minute phone call later with Dr. Truitt,I finally let me sleep after 3 months for a full 8 hours! I was shocked. The problem got worse the next night once more as I still had a few days to go before our set appointment. But I had seen that it COULD improve. It was all in my head. And that gave me a lot of hope. I downloaded a meditation App she told me to use. Put me to sleep for a few hours. Anytime I panicked, I tried her breathing techniques. Went out for Since then, I went to see Dr. Kate a few times, and her knowledge was astounding. but more importantly, her attention to detail-- ESPECIALLY to the client. It wasn't a job. She was genuinely concerned, genuinely cared, and actually remembered my dilemma and what we talked about! I would recommend her to anyone in a heartbeat. She doesn't know it, but she was at a very pivotal moment in my life. In retrospect, I sincerely believe that if Dr. Kate had not been as knowledgable and understanding, and did not care for her job, and if this experience had been like the other psych experiences before her, I would have done something very very very stupid that first day I called to setup an appointment. Months of the hopelessness had caught up! I was better a few weeks after starting with Dr. Truitt!
