It's the fountain that you see in the middle of City Hall Square. There's a reason why it looks small in such a huge area. It was meant to be in Amager Square, but the Stork Fountain design won that location. Instead, it was decided to place it in a location that was originally intended for the Gefion Fountain. Go figure! I think the fountain is probably more popular for being moved and renovated so many times over the years. It even looks different from pictures posted here 7 years ago.
The initial fountain was placed here in 1904. The central sculpture was added 6 years later, and then recasted into a bronze one in 1923. It's a bull battling a mythical dragon (or lindworm). There isn't really much said about what inspired Joakim Skovgaard and Thorvald Bindesbøll to create it. The bull appears to be defeating the dragon. There's also a formation of dragons looking on from the steps of Copenhagen's City Hall. The dragons were once part of the fountain before the final sculpture was placed in the center. So, is the bull really winning seeing that he's outnumbered? I would love to know the whole story and the outcome of it all. I'll just think of it as yet another struggle between good and evil, and leave it that. You might as well see it while you're visiting City Hall before shopping. It's all part of the Copenhagen experience. read more
