The site has a lighthouse in classic Maryland style, but it's rarely open. There are some places where you can get in the water, but many where you cannot. The conditions out here can be a little rough, either from too much wind or, immediately inland, fetid swampiness. The history of the place as a Civil War penal colony is interesting. There's some placards and such, but not an enormous amount of actual stuff to do when I've visited. It should be noted that while these are not part of the park, visitors will see a memorial to the site's many lost inhabitants and a separate Confederate memorial as they drive up. For locals, getting a pass may be worthwhile. For those visiting the area, there are a lot of prettier and more interesting sites you'd be passing on the way here.

We learned about how the garden was used for medicinal purposes and food. We got to feed the chickens! We learned about cooking in colonial times. We learned about how cannons work and saw a can fired off a ship! We learned about how a print shop worked and even got to help print something! We also saw a cabin built by and for enslaved people, and learned how life changed for them after emancipation. It was such a fun day and I want to go back!

I was able to walk around the property on the paved pathways and not only see and read about the history of the buildings, but also hear from live historians and some of the locations. I arrived later in the afternoon and received my ticket at a discounted price ($3.50) compared to the $10 admission fee charged during the day for adults. I loved learning the history of this area while visiting from out of town. I highly recommend stopping if you can, but do give yourself minimum 2 hours (or more!!) to get through everything. It commemorates the highly important US Naval Amphibious training base that was located here between 1942 and 1945. Many Americans don't realize that our success in amphibious operations was directly attributable to all of those servicemen who were trained here at Solomon's Island. There is really no trace left of the base, but you can stop by and see the statue of the Sailor by sculptor Antonio Mendez. It's also a very beautiful location near where Back Creek joins the Patuxent River.

On November 11, 1864, she left the flotilla base at St. Inigoes on her way to the Navy shipyards in Washington D.C., for repair. Not long underway, as she passed the Piney Point lighthouse, the boiler exploded and she sank immediately. Only eight of the crew of fifty-seven survived. Some of the unknown dead are buried here in this peaceful locust grove on the shores of the river. Well worth your time to visit.

This fortified hilltop was built in 1777 by George Washington's Army, mainly to function as an observation and alarm post watching over Morristown and surrounding areas, it also doubled as a place of retreat for guards stationed in the town. The British never made an attack on Morristown... but it's 2018 and here I am - oh my gosh, i'm just kidding!!! The park is well kept, there's a great place to sit and have a bite to eat (just bring some food with you) and I should probably mention to watch out for the mozzies (mosquitos...) - oh they'll getcha good out here!

There are live human guides around but they do not walk the place with you but are available to answer any questions you might have. The recorded tour was very good with many options to hear the story of the place and its inhabitants. The enslaved and indentured folks who lived and worked here are well represented in the tour. We really enjoyed it and highly recommend a stop. We spent 2 solid hours inside the Plantation house and walking the grounds. You can stay as long as you wish. Cost was minimal $14 each and value was excellent. You could choose just a house or exterior tour we chose both. Mark & Nancy.
