What a fantastic way to save a few pennies! Borshch, which is hard to spell but easy to remember,…read morereally took the expense and hassle out of buying appliances for us. Borshch is a family run discount appliance store open to the general public. From fridges to freezers, AGAs to tumble dryers, any and all appliances a family could want are found here. There are two types of item to be found at Borshch -- discount items, which have minor dents, scratches or small beauty damage; and new items. The new items are priced competitively, but not vastly lower than Comet or Curry's. The discount items, with minor surface damage, are heavily discounted, at 20% to 50% less than you'd find anywhere else. The warehouse is located in a slightly dodgy, very run down part of industrial Birmingham near Digbeth. The shop itself, however, is very neat and nothing out of order. The sales people are all very friendly, and know their appliances. Borshch also deliver within a 20-mile radius, for a flat fee. We took our fridge/freezer home ourselves, and the man very graciously helped us load it in the car. They have a very large selection of items, including American tumble dryers and top-loading washing machines (Maytag! OMG!).

This is a brilliant place, especially for the present Credit Crunch times. It hardly matters if you're going to have it built in, and you can save a lot of money. It's well worth a look if an appliance has broken down and you're a bit short, or even if you're a property developer or something like that.

'There's not much 'skill' in that!', you might exclaim? The 'Skill' part of the name is down to owner, Zahood. Over the last couple of years I've had equipment that hasn't worked and has almost ended up in the bin. Rather than consign it to landfill, I've been into Skill and Zahood has on every occasion bought the life back to my gear. The first time I walked in with an old Stylophone I asked 'Can you fix this?'. 'Is it electrical?' he responded. I nodded. 'Then I can fix it!' he triumphantly replied. It's now a running joke between us and I have him to thanks for repairing countless items recently. He's basically a superhero with a circuit tester and a soldering iron!

It's main line is adapters, connectors and wiring for basically any household electrics item. This includes audio/visual and computing. They also sell a small selection of home entertainment goods (radios/MP3/CD/DVD players) but it's pièce de résistance is their knowledge and willingness to impart this to customers when you ask for advice. This is also matched by their repairs service, something that you don't see so often these days. A sound little no-nonsense place to try if you're looking for that hard to find adaptor ... or even harder to find experienced advice.

I'd not tried all the rest before I tried the Depot, but afterwards I certainly didn't feel like I'd tried the best. Nor do I feel like the Depot is trying its best. Wild comma-less claims aside, it appears to be the sort of shop that knows what it does, does it pretty well and asks for nothing more than enough custom to keep going; and more power to 'em for it. What the Depot essentially is is a place where you can buy various bits and pieces for the home. I'm sure you recognise its sort even if you've never been there, perhaps even if you've never read this review. It's the sort of shop where you can walk away with a mixing bowl, some rawl plugs and a Michael Jackson mirror, all for about a tenner. There's a lot of these kind of shops in this part of the world (I'm thinking Bearwood, Smethwick, Oldbury, West Brom - West Brum's equivalent of New York, London, Paris, Munich?) and the Depot, whilst serviceable, has little to make it stand out. It's the kind of place to check out if you need something, but not the kind of place you'd make a special effort to go to.
