As soon as we walked in, we were warmly greeted by a gentleman (I wish I'd gotten his name!) who immediately made us feel welcome. He was friendly, clearly passionate about books, and incredibly knowledgeable. He asked if it was our first time visiting, and when we said yes, he surprised us with an amazing gesture....a free book, each, tailored to our favorite genres. We were blown away by the generosity and thoughtfulness. The store itself is a treasure. Books galore, neatly organized by genre, and the place is not super larger, but makes you just want to look at it all. They also have a great selection of puzzles throughout. It's obvious that this place is loved -- both by the people who work there and those who visit. I purchased one book and I felt the price was reasonable. I can't wait to come back to Red Wing and when I do, I think another stop at this charming bookstore is on the list. Highly recommend to any fellow book lovers!

We spent two hours here and it did not disappoint This place really does have it all, and it is a destination in itself. They have mini golf, a hand carved carousel (what?! Who knew this was possible?!), ice cream, a candy shop, lunch options (so we'd stay and shop longer . And we did!!), a museum of sorts with antique toys, a book room, and many rooms filled with toys for purchase! We didn't allow ourselves enough time to go to the National Eagle Center so I suppose next time we'll start with that and then end here!

The owner -- Susan (?) -- is apparently an ex English professor and the vibe I get from her is that I'm a student who is late with a paper. Bookends has a nicely curated and somewhat limited selection of new books, and also includes used books in its collection - and that's great. But, the proprietor seemed to be completely disinterested in providing a welcoming atmosphere, and when I inquired about a book I wanted to share with a friend, replied rather haughtily that I'd "only find that book at a Walmart..." What was the book? One of Diana Gabaldon's lovely historic fantasies...ok, not A.S. Byatt, but, really? Act disdainful when a potential customer inquires about a book? Not even suggest a likely alternative? I'm glad there's a tiny surviving bookstore in Menomonie, but if I lived here, I'd probably not make it a regular stop. And that's a shame.

A friendly grey tabby (Simon) welcomed us at the door, followed shortly by the shop's owner. I love little shops like this where you have to dig a little to find treasures -- but I walked out with four books for $12, which was very reasonable. The atmosphere was cozy and welcoming, and I will definitely stop there again when I'm in Hastings.

I stayed past 7 pm, which is when the mall closes daily. However, this bookstore closes daily at 8 pm. Awesome! This B&N is at the food court. You can enter the store without going through the mall. I had just finished eating dinner at the food court, so I took the mall entrance. The selection of reduced books and other items is this store's strength. I picked up a Sip by S'well bottle for $10, which is unheard of. One of their bottles that keep hot drinks hot and cold drinks cold for many hours normally goes for $20, at least. I needed one to fill up at the airport and loved the marble design that I got. I gravitated towards the Pusheen section. The plushies were adorable. I had some willpower and did not get any. There are a lot of plushies at this store, from BT21, to Harry Potter. I loved seeing them all. My favourite discovery was the music section. You can still listen to CDs here. I haven't seen that setup in a decade. I loved looking at the records (vinyl) and turntables. I was so happy. This store is huge. It has a full cafe with seating. I enjoyed my time browsing. I had to figure out where to pay. The payment area by the mall was unstaffed. There was an information desk smack in the middle of the store. Nearby was the second payment area. I had the nicest woman at the checkout. She found my name in the system after she got my phone number. If you sign up for a B&N membership, you get 15% off everything. I tend to shop here often that this membership has paid for itself and more. She placed my water bottle in a plastic bag and wished me a nice evening. I reciprocated and left the store, heading to my car through the mall. I love this store in my old stomping ground. I will definitely return and maybe stay a bit longer than an hour next time. (35)
