Don't park, as you'll get yelled at. - This depot is open Thursday through Monday, from 8:30 am till 4:30 pm. It's closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. A few weeks back, I had a computer keyboard and mouse that weren't operational. I needed to dispose of them, but where? I did a search and found Markham Household Hazardous Waste Depot. The funny thing is that I have driven past this depot countless times and never knew that it existed. I do now! It was a Saturday. I drove northbound on Rodick Road and made a left turn into the depot. I learned later that I had entered this depot correctly and that it's a one-way path. I thought that I needed to park and then bring my stuff over to two guys sitting behind a desk. I was backing up my car and got yelled at by one of them. It was quite the rude awakening. I always find that if signage isn't clear to me, it needs help. Nowhere did it say that driving in was a one-way direction and that formally parking next to other cars that were parked wasn't allowed. It's the main reason why I took a star off. Rather than yelling at a first-time visitor, how about being more cheerful and tone things down? One of them asked what I had. I said a keyboard and mouse. He said to go up to the pink table. I thanked him and said that it was my first time here. I implied to give me a break from yell-fest 2025. I drove up next to the pink table. There was a guy. I asked if I was at the right place with a keyboard and mouse. He said yes. I then asked if I could park off to the side and fetch my stuff. Heaven forbid getting yelled at a second time. He said yes. I brought my stuff over to the table as he dragged a large bin over. He said to set my items on the table. I did. I thanked him and went back to my car. My keyboard and mouse had served me well. The former was ergonomic and corded. The latter was my first Apple mouse. They were both over a decade old. Farewell! I left and continued running errands. This depot is open Thursday through Monday, from 8:30 am till 4:30 pm. It's closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. I was here at around 1 pm on a Saturday afternoon. One sign said that photo ID was required because this depot is for York region residents only. I never was asked to present photo ID. I am grateful that this place exists. Signage and less yelling would be nice, especially to first-time visitors like me. (318)

It's almost 2025, and it is still as easy as 1-2-3, just like what Allison Y. wrote in her review…read moreback in 2017 :) This hazardous waste depot makes it so easy to dispose electronics and household chemicals. They ask you want you are disposing, check your ID, and you just leave everything at the table, and the staff will help you sort it out. The service is usually fast, and they already have a great system in place to make our lives easier during our visit. The depot is opened everyday except for Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

While most Markham residents know how to use their blue and green bins, and where to take their…read moreelectronic and household hazardous waste for recycling and proper disposal, many may not know where to dispose large amount of household waste, such as construction materials, tires, furniture, broken appliances, etc.. Through a personal need to dispose large amount of such, I found out the answer is a Transfer Station operated by Miller Waste Management. Located on Rodick Road near the city's electronic and hazardous collection center, the transfer station is a fully functioning waste management facility that opens to public on weekends and some holidays. Public can drive their garbage in residential cars or trucks to the station to dispose the waste for $8/dump, subject to weight and quantity limit. I believe the current limit is 6 bags or 50kg, whichever is larger. If your junk are tires, large appliances, furniture, even large amount of construction materials, the cost is by tonne or by unit. How it works is you drive up to a booth and answer the operator's questions. When your car is next to operator booth, your car is actually sitting on a scale. The operator records the weight of your car. S/he directs you to a drive up to a monstrous sized warehouse that collects garbage and so on. You wait for your turn to drive in and haul the junk out of your car yourself and pile it onto other junk. This is a 100% self serve place, so bring some muscles if your dump is heavy. When done, you drive out following a preset route painted on the ground to the other side of the operator booth onto the scale. Another operator will talk to you. S/he weights your car and tell you the charge. You can pay by cash or credit card (as far as I remember). What I find interesting is that, despite the fee schedule states a bag limit, the people there really care only the weight. So unless your junk is super heavy, the fee is $8 per disposal. For large home appliance, this place charges $26/unit, whereas the City of Markham will collect from your curb at $11/unit. Of course, this wonderful deal has a catch: you need an appointment, and the City only collect once a month from your street. Another note is some of the stuffs that you can dispose here for a fee, the Elgin Mills Community Recycling Center (Elgin Mills and Leslie) will allow you to dispose for free. These stuffs are recyclable. The rest Elgin Mills center will collect for $10, whereas Miller charges $8. Therefore, depending on how willing you are to drive to Elgin Mills Road, and how much and how urgent you must dispose, you can significantly lower the cost. But Miller transfer station is an option when you have too much garbage that you want to be rid of quickly. Plus the City simply doesn't collect large amount of construction materials on regular pick up days.

Never, ever, ever pay anyone to take your metal waste b/c there are people who pay YOU!…read more Lockdown, for me, meant a lot of decluttering. I have an area in my basement where I keep metal waste. Just household knickknacks, e-waste and decommissioned appliances I've set aside over the years b/c I know they don't belong in the garbage. ANYTHING that contains metal, this place will accept them. Things I had were: - USB phone charging cables - Old pots & pans - Broken small appliances ie. electric kettle, hairdryer, iron, rice cooker, hand mixer - Christmas lights from the 90's (lol) - Burnt out monitors x2 - Rusted rotors I'm all for recycling initiatives. If it doesn't break your back transporting the items then I think it's a simple chore to do to help the landfills. I've been to other metal recycling centers but many of them seem to pull numbers out of thin air which doesn't earn my trust. I found Triune through forums, read great reviews all around so I thought this time I'd give them a try. Location is right off of 401, super convenient. Nothing fancy. It is literally a junkyard. Piles of scrap metal all over the place. Dirt road (lol the guy behind me came in his sparkly clean Porsche, so yeah.. don't do that!) But as messy as the place may seem, they have a system in place, even a POS system (see receipt) which super impressed me! They took each item as it was, I received no judgement here, not like some places where they'll give you attitude for bringing in something small or low quality that's "not worth their time". I'm very pleased with their assistance and service. I will definitely come back to recycle here again. }} How-to: Drive to the end of the road, you'll see their sign. Upon arrival, park as close to the building as you can. Grab a shopping cart, load your items, and they'll help you move the cart up to the loading dock with a forklift. From there, they'll weigh items by category and you'll receive your payout. Easy. Receipt included. If you arrive and feel kinda lost, just flag down anyone who looks like they work there, they're real friendly and will tell you what to do. {{ Friendly reminder for e-waste }} Be sure to clear all sensitive information & personal data before bringing them in!
