Service for five course luncheon with live entertainment for residents and family
    Raymond N.

I was on rehab 4th floor since July 2022 and very happy. New residents get a bouquet of fresh flowers as well as an outfit to wear. Carlos the maintenance tech helped me connect my laptop computer. Mary E and Emily two of the CNAs were terrific to interact with as were most of staff. I got VERY QUICK email responses to my concerns from nurse supervisor Tamarra. So quick that when I called her phone she told me that she had already responded before I had time to look. I am now on long term 9th floor and very happy. I am being sent next to an assisted living place. Excellent WiFi in all spaces. Free phone calls to USA/Canada. Your own phone number for incoming calls. Be sure to check the number for incoming as in two rooms the number shown for incoming was wrong. Staff helped correct that. Free daily newspaper and TV in multiple languages. Daily sweep/mop Daily laundry [but sometimes clothes sent to other residents]. You can tell staff likes working here as some have been here more then twenty years. Tiffany, one of the physical therapists commutes from NJ to work here. They have a schedule of events on your room bulletin board that list things to do SEVEN DAYS A WEEK! The recreation director can give further details. Grace, my recreation director even helped me set up my new desktop computer that replaces the laptop that only had 2GB of memory. Dietary needs are taken care of. Renal meals for kidney patients. Diabetics will see that cookies come in sealed packs that say "sugar free". Kosher meals You can ask to make alternate choices to your menu. Dietitian and social worker terrific people to deal with. I am amazed at how accommodating they are. Very responsive to your needs/wishes. Before coming here I was given a list of fifty places to pick from. After reviews by myself and family on the WWW my final pick was Dry Harbor. One time I had to handwrite a list of doctors' appointments because they couldn't find the printed list previously turned in. DH may not be the perfect place; but it is as close to perfection as you can get! I HIGHLY recommend Dry Harbor

Used clothing that is several sizes too big I have no idea where these came from

When I raised this issue with the social worker, she repeatedly suggested I was making up the discharge date that they notified us of. This made setting up post discharge care needlessly difficult. There were also several packages that were delivered to my father, but not opened for him to access the contents (clothing), even with me calling several times to remind them that it's not enough to give him the sealed package, it needs to be opened. The first time, it took five days after delivery for him access the clothing we sent. Every time we called, we've received assurances, and they've lost my trust to follow through with their word. I would not recommend this rehab facility. Edit; after placing several additional calls, the person in charge of discharges finally returned my call the day before I go pick up my father to tell me he cannot be discharged tomorrow. She spends a significant of the phone call arguing with me, insisting that we spoke yesterday when we had not. She tells me if I'm picking him up it has to be at 11 AM. This would've been a great piece of information to relate to me sooner than the day before I am scheduled to travel across the country to pick him up on the flight I booked two weeks ago. She accuses me of "playing games" and refuses to connect me with somebody else. I still don't know if they will make a referral for him to have post discharge care. Although I have repeatedly told her I need this at this point, I have no confidence that she will actually do it.

It's hard not to notice some scary one-star reviews for Queens Boulevard Extended Care (QBEC). But…read moreI see similar reviews for other hospitals, rehabs, nursing homes, etc. Our sad national reality is that these facilities are being horribly squeezed by insurers, especially Medicaid and Medicare, and at a time when our aging population is boosting patient census. So yes, there are times when a patient will ring for care and wait a long time for response. I experienced some of this during the early part of my one-month stay at QBEC before I became ambulatory. It's horrible. But until our societal priorities change, these facilities will always be strained and need more staff than they can afford. I'm angry, but not a QBEC. I'm angry about the societal values that limit what QBEC and all other such facilities can do. But as for the tings QBEC can control . . . I'd give more than five-stars if I could. This facility's strength is its people. All patients have a choice in how they will interact with staff; either respectfully or with disdain. Those who choose to treat staff with respect will find that the nurses, CNAs (aides), and transport people, are amazing. With all the horrible things we see in the news today, it's so uplifting to experience the kindness, compassion, and just-plain niceness staff gladly delivers. I started on the second floor and eventually was moved to the fourth. Interaction with staffs on both floors was always delightful. No matter how messed up I was physically, my interactions with staff always made me feel much better. I especially want to call out the physical and occupational therapists. I worked with Marriel (I hope I spelled her name correctly) for PT and Luciana for OT. Thanks to their knowledge, kindness and supportiveness, I can now walk unaided (I came home with a can and walker, but both are now optional)... even though I entered the facility as a dead-weight blob that could barley turn over in bed. I was told by others at the outset how hard therapy would be and folks around me wondered if I would really embrace it. Yes, it is a challenge. But Marriel and Luciana made it easy to embrace. They were never soft on me. They pushed me, often hard, to the point where I needed a nap after each session. But they never caused pain. They always knew how far they could push beyond what I had previously done, and that what their aim. And, of course, they always watched with eagle eyes and took appropriate precautions to make sure I was safe. And by choosing to always do therapy in the gym, as opposed to in my room, I was able to observe other therapists and patients. I saw other therapists work effectively with their patients at whatever condition the latter were. All were different, but I saw all make gradual progress each day. I'm happy to be home now. Who wouldn't be! But there is one bittersweet aspect to this. I have to say I think about and miss the many wonderful people at QBEC that showed me so much kindness and support.

The hot water was non existent after a few minutes in the shower. The food was disgusting. I told them I was a diabetic but that did not prevent them from giving dried pasta twice a day. One evening when dinner was served, pasta again, there was no fork on my tray and when I asked for a fork I was told n o one had a fork. They then distributed plastic forks to everyone. My bed was never changed but instead was straightened up each day. One evening I asked an attendant for water, she said she would be right back. Right back was two days later and when I mentioned I was still waiting for water she just laughed in my face. I expressed my feelings to those in charge and they said they would compensate me. I advised them if I was not properly compensated I would put a review on their web page.

I only found out because the hospital called me, and by the time I rushed there, it was too late--I couldn't be there in the final moments. The night nurses at this facility lack basic professionalism and ethical standards. If your loved one has respiratory issues, this is not the place for them. I strongly discourage anyone from considering this nursing home.

PSA and WARNING: DO NOT SELECT THIS FACILITY AT ALL UNLESS YOU ARE PREPARED FOR BAD SERVICE! IT IS…read moreNOT 5 STARS! The low rating reviews on Yelp are very accurate. What angers me the most about Cliffside is that I had to drive far for this falsely rated 5 stars facility for no rehab or therapy for the first week you stay there, have to deal with rude staff, get verbally abused/insulted, same race prejudice and bullied everyday that I am there, I was expected to do all the work since they will yell at you for asking them to work or pee too often and they will avoid you on purpose if you ask for help, the facility gets paid by the insurance for the services which I was doing and also get very minimum care. I made a HUGE MISTAKE by not researching at all since NYP Hospital was rushing me to make a selection. I based the decision on New York Presbyterian Hospital's list of recommendations and Cliffside was rated 5 stars. God even gave me signs to NOT select this facility and I ignored several signs (another closer (only 1.5 miles away) rehab was available right away and there was a delay with checking into Cliffside) so my Mom and I have to suffer the consequences. The problem is once a rehab is selected, insurance won't cover the cost for the change and they want patients to avoid rehab hopping. CONS: -Rude staff 99.99% of the nurses/aides are rude, obnoxious and not helpful at all. If you advocate for help, they will take revenge on you, insult you constantly and avoid helping you on purpose. If you are family member visiting your loved ones at Cliffside, they will tell you to take care of your loved ones at THEIR facility. Their excuse is that they are too busy taking care of other patients and you have to do the caretaking work since you are there. It took them quite some time to get the patient's medicine ready too. Dani (don't know her spelling of her name and she never introduced herself either) is one of the rudest nurse I have ever encountered. She doesn't like to be questioned and always have something passive aggressive and insulting things to say or talk back. Hunter Green, Gurung, Shu, Michelle (who is mentioned accurately in other Yelp reviews) and Dani are some of the rudest people I have encountered at Cliffside. Most nurses/aides will not introduce themselves or have name tags on so it was hard to get everyone's names. o -Rehab doesn't start till 1 week later The whole point for my Mom to stay at Cliffside was to get rehab because she couldn't stand balanced. They only evaluate you on the first day and then you never hear back from them. My Mom stayed there for 8 days and had to endure hell the minute we went in till discharge. She only started having short OT rehab session on the 7th day of her stay. I had to walk my Mom around the floor on the 6th and 7th day since I didn't see much improvement with my Mom and she was actually getting worst just lying, peeing and pooping in bed all day. It was my mistake to think that rehab started right away when you checked in. I was told that this place doesn't start till one week later. I don't know what is the point of staying there for at least one week with no rehab except for the facility to get more insurance money. If I had known there was no rehab till 1 week later, I would have requested an even earlier discharge or not even elected to go into rehab after the hospital discharge. -No confidence or trust in staff for good care I have visited my Mom most of the days since I didn't trust that my Mom will get care and know that my Mom will be neglected. We were even locked in the elevator and Dani said that it was known fact the elevator locks up during lunch hour and it was our fault that we didn't know about this known fact. -Old facility and lack of available parking The whole place is old, dumpy and not modern at all. The furnitures are old. There is very little available street parking. You have to arrive early and lucky if you can find one open spot in front of the facility. I usually have to park 2 blocks away and it was still hard to find available spots too. I have heard horror stories about nursing homes and Cliffside proved that nursing home are horrible. PRO: -Social Work Director - Jane (The one star for this Yelp review is for her. Otherwise, Cliffside should really have 0 or negative stars) The only saving grace is Jane who is the social work director. She tried to help us and was more understanding but she cannot control her rude staff. She said to give them a chance. I gave them a chance and it just kept becoming unbearable and painful staying there. Final warning: don't stay at Cliffside unless you are a glutton for punishment. It could be like the roach motel where you check in and they don't want you to checkout.

My family didn't place dad there blindly, it was by choice, after weighing all the options. We have a family member who is a long term resident there currently as well as a long time family friend who is there too. They love the care they receive and the staffers they receive it from. Their recommendations were well received. From the moment I entered the front door and was greeted by the front desk attendant Lana, I knew dad was in a great, loving, caring and Holy place. I went up to dad's floor, was greeted by every staff member I passed. Not just on my first visit, but every visit. No matter how busy they were, every single person said hello. As time went on, those greetings were by name. It truly felt like dad was being cared for by loving family. My visits only lasted a week or so as I live about 700 miles away, but my experience and my opinions of my dad's treatment are fact based. He could not have received better care anywhere else. The facility was spotless, well maintained and the staff all love why they do. It takes a special kind of person to do this work. Ozanam is blessed with the best. Ozanam is even updating the rooms one floor at a time. It's nice to see the investment back into the facilities. The office staff was extremely helpful, kind and very communicative. They assisted in every way possible, making the daunting logistics of dealing with the insurance companies a less daunting part of the experience. I could not ask for better! I'd like to name everyone I met there who cared for me dad and assisted my family throughout, but I would have to name every person in the public eye as well as everyone behind the scenes there. By God's plan, my dad, Donald B. declined due to advancing medical conditions. He received great personal care and was treated with dignity up to and beyond when he took his final breath. He passed on Sept 22, peacefully in his sleep. The staffers who knew him were as sad as we are. Thank you to everyone at Ozanam Hall of Queens for all you do for every person in your care every day. May continue to God bless you all. Please keep doing what you do!!! You all are absolutely incredible. Rest easy dad! God's got you!
