Turns out the old pipe was a 3" pipe, and should've been a 4", it also had a couple of 45° angles in it, and someone years back had tried to snake it with a 1/2" piece of pvc which had snapped off inside and was creating a terrible clog. We helped dig it out and chatted. He's very mellow and personable and humorous! He was pretty booked, too, but managed to squeeze us in after another job, which was great, especially considering it was right before a major week-long snow storm. Yes, they are professionals which means that certain repairs will cost more. However, with a service visit, they can assess beforehand and give you a quote, leaving you to decide if you would like to go with their services. Personally, as a homeowner, there were several things wrong with our new build that we needed some help on. Our builders rushed through several things, including an issue with electricity that always scares me. The staff who helped us have always been extremely dedicated, explaining us each step they were going to do patiently, without contempt or condescension. Again, I can't say I've always experienced that, particularly as a woman of color living in the South. Our neighbor recommended their maintenance service, and we have invested in it with no regrets. The people who chat with us are always polite, no matter on the phone or in person. The standard of care is really high, and I think they really value people at their company.
