I was quoted $1,800 to replace a lowboy water heater. John said he charges $900 in labor plus the cost of a new unit so I accepted the $1,800 quote trusting John's professionalism that he knew the new unit would cost ~$900. After John bought the new unit for me (purchase of new unit is included in $1,800 quote) he would not give me my receipt for the new unit. I asked for my receipt multiple times and he refused each time. After John left, I searched HomeDepot.com for the new unit using information found on the new unit and John confirmed through email I had the correct unit, which cost $550 b/f tax (~$600 after tax). I now understand why John wouldn't give me my receipt for the new unit. I asked John for a refund of the $300 difference in the actual unit cost versus the quoted unit cost and John refused. Considering the new unit cost $600, John charged me $1,200 in labor for a roughly four hour job (~$300/hr in labor). John asked for my help with labor twice: 1) putting the old unit on a dolly and 2) loading it into his van. John was also vaping in my home without asking (I would have said no). I gave John a chance to make it right a few times but he refused. I would not use John Shiver/Shiver Plumbing as he is disingenuous and unprofessional. read more

Moved to Nashville recently and had a clog in my kitchen drain. I am really glad I came across John - he was great, and I will not hesitate to call him in the future if I have plumbing issues. He was able to schedule an appointment very promptly and was able to fix the drain issue very quickly. He was great at explaining the issue and how to prevent it in the future - he clearly takes his craft seriously and is very knowledgeable. During the process he also provided general tips about drains and drainage and ended up helping us get parts for and install a mixing valve to solve an issue we were having getting hot water more quickly circulated to the bathrooms in the back of our house (our water heater is in the front of the house). No no no!!! Do NOT waste your time or money on this guy! He was so rude to us! Every time my husband had any communication with him, he was a complete jerk! I'm not even sure how he has any clients! Aside from his attitude, he halfway did a job, then blamed our contractor for everything that went wrong including leaking a gallon of water into our newly renovated bathroom. He ripped off the bead board and left it in pieces (all could have been avoided if he just did what he was supposed to do in the first place) and now we have to pay for materials and labor to replace it. He also had the nerve to tell my husband we needed to lend him our SUV so he could go "run errands" for an afternoon when he broke his key to his truck in our driveway. (Didn't even ask us, not that we would have lent it to him anyway) On top of that, he left his truck here for days until the new key came. WHO DOES THAT?!? He showed up on the days he said he would, but he was at least 45 minutes late both times. Worst of all, my husband told him we really need him to fix this issue because we're having a party this weekend and our guests will need to use this new bathroom. This party was pretty much the whole reason we are having the bathroom built. He tells us that he doesn't know if he'll have time to fix everything (ALL HIS FAULT BTW) because HIS WIFE is also having a party this weekend. So his personal life comes before his business and his clients. And it doesn't matter to him that we're left SOL. My husband and I own a business and this is NOT how you treat your customers. Again, I don't know how he gets ANY repeat clients. On his website, he states that his company treats "your home as their own". I would hate to see their home then. I'm beyond devastated at the situation he has left us in. Please don't waste your money or time with this guy. He does not know his craft/industry as well as he says he does. read more

John Shiver and Shiver Plumbing are amazing! He has been to our home on three separate occasions for various plumbing needs. Our home was built spec in 2005 and the builder is no longer around. Although most of the house is in great shape some shortcuts were taken with the initial mechanicals (not the highest quality components were used). We have had to do numerous upgrades to the existing systems. John has been courteous, professional, on time, on budget and a joy to work with. If you need your plumbing systems evaluated with fair and honest estimate, give John Shiver a call. I was freaking out with my husband gone and frozen pipes....then a busted pipe, water spewing everywhere. Luckily, I am intelligent enough to shut off the water myself, but I was freaking out again because it was 4:00 pm on the coldest day of the year so of course plumbers are busy today. John made it out late though and was happy to help. He quickly (less than 30 minutes) repaired our busted pipe at what I would consider and extremely reasonable price. I'm so grateful and will definitely be saving his information if anything ever happens again (which it surely will!). Important Sidenote: I'm an engineer and used to inspect pipework for a living so I know what he did was solid work. I'm new to Nashville, and this was seriously one of the best experiences I've had with local businesses since being here. And probably the best service/tradesmen I've hired, regardless of location. I recently just bought a house and I had an issue with the master bathroom shower not getting hot enough. It was a simple fix but I had no idea what was the problem. John scheduled a prompt appointment, let me know when he was on his way, and arrived on time. He worked quickly, explained what was the problem and also fixed my kitchen sink. I cannot say enough good things about John Shiver and Shiver Plumbing. I was awakened this morning by the sound of rushing water under my house. I was able to get the water turned off myself and started calling for help. The last company I used was not able to send anyone today. The 2nd company I called, for whatever reason didn't even return my call. I searched here on YELP and found Shiver Plumbing. Not only was he able to come today he arrived at the time he said he would, actually a little earlier. He assessed the problem quickly and gave me a reasonable quote and then charged a little less. John is my go to plumber every time. He fixed a huge disaster in my house with frozen pipes and every time he comes he's very clear about what's going on, my options, ways I can save money. He's a stand up guy who goes above and beyond. Today he went under my house to check my pressure regulator and discovered two of my HVAC vents were disconnected. He fixed those too. I recommend John. John came out the first time promptly so it seems stated our builders incorrectly did everything yet seems he only put a bandaid on the problem at hand, within not even a week same thing leaking again, to make a long story short he never fixed anything it's still leaking after his 3 attempts. I called and stated it's been 3 times I think we are going to go with someone else get another opinion etc but due to the fact we are still in the same boat can we get some sort of refund cuz u didn't do ur job? It was as though I lit a fire in his butt cuz our came attitude completely unprofessional and not taking any ownership whatsoever and playing the blame game, making excuses and justifying everything trying to tell me he can come do this and that but why would I let this man back into my house after yelling at me and treating me this way on top of 3 failed attempts ??!!! He even hung up on me then not long later had his wife call to finally cave and say she'll send us some money back! I've never dealt with someone more rude and unprofessional ever I don't see how he has a business if he thinks it's okay to treat his clients that way.
