Weird place. Bought a pair and they didn't give me a bag, saying they were going bagless. Fine. A week later I was back seeing everyone got a bag for their purchases. Another time, I needed to use the restroom after checking out. One staff told me it was for customers only, so I asked if I needed to show the receipt, then he said the toilet was broken. I came to ask the girl at the front desk, she said no public restroom (?!) People, I just literally checked out. You can keep the restroom and all the shoes for yourselves. Customer service is a mess here. They used to have some good staffs and lost them. The shoes no long look that good, neither the price. I liked the layout once you took the escalator up to the second floor! I didn't see if there was a bathroom. I looked but didn't see one available. I was surprised at this location. Everything is so clean and organized and there is an entire floor of athletic footwear in addition to a floor above for women's shoes. I found several versions of the style I was looking for at very reasonable prices. I removed one star because two different sales people came up right next to me and never asked if they could help me although there very few people in the store and they were closing soon. Just a hint for better customer service: If you want to let people know the store is closing soon, just ask if they need help finding anything so it's more pleasant. They sent my Crocs to the store and never sent me an email letting me know that my package was there, (I called the store and they let me know it was there.) I placed an order to be delivered and several days later received an email stating the order did not go through due to technical issues. I called DSW customer service and the two customer service representatives could not explain the issue stating PayPal would need to sort it out in 3-5 days. So, I cancelled the order because the issue could not be resolved promptly and I need the shoes soon. I lost the 20% discount and the weekend bag that I received with the first order. Then on the reorder, to add insult to injury...the site would not let me sign in...the keyboard for the password would not come up. Clearly shoe stores are designed for women. Even with their multiple floors, the mens' section is only about 1/3 of a single floor. But even so, the selection seems pretty good for an average male like myself. I'm not looking for glitz and glamour, but instead efficiency, pricing and practicality. For the most part they do have some nice quality shoes but sizing can be very difficult to find. I have been there multiple times and found the PERFECT pair of shoes, only to be disappointed that they do not have my size. The 9 to 10 ranges get snatched up pretty quickly. Be absolutely sure to wear those shoes before buying. These are discount shoes after all. A LOT of them are very uncomfortable. Be prepared to spend some time there trying things on and then be prepared to wait in line for the extremely slow cashiers who couldn't care less about your time. Love the location of this two level shoe store. I was looking for boots and found so much more. The store was clean and very organized. The flats were organized by most popular to least. There was also a display showing the latest and greatest designer shoes in the midsection of the store. I literally stopped and picked up two pair of shoes. The pumps had there on section and wasn't mixed in as I've seen in some DSWs. The back section was all boots. Needless to say, I left with three pairs of shoes. I don't often venture into the bowels of Downtown Crossing any longer. There has been little allure for me for awhile now, which saddens me because I used to love going there. However, a last minute invitation to a swanky dinner event had me running to DSW on my lunch hour for a pair of shoes to go with the dress I plan to wear. (Serendipitiously, just last week, I got a dress on sale that I loved but had no idea what I would wear it to). Now that the rains of the past several days have finally stopped, both the sun and hot weather thankfully are back however I was not expecting heat and humidity inside the store. There wasn't a lick of air-conditioning going on in there. Sweating and trying on shoes is not an enjoyable combo. Nonetheless I was thrilled with the selection of black satin dress shoes. In fact there was a bonanza of great dress shoes in many styles and colors. I struggled to decide amongst 3 pairs all of which seemed to be a steal. I also did a quick perusal of the boots area and found reason to think about returning another day when I have more time to try on the ankle boots that had my name written all over them. With my shoes in hand I paid in a nanosecond as there was not one person in line and was back at work in under an hour. In the heart of the city, the multi-floor location separates the boys from the girls, effectively upping the attention to focused necessity shopping by 43%. The chain's got prices that hold up to rigorous web comparison shopping, a decent stock of non-standard sizes and they sell Born brand casuals - the most comfortable things I've ever stuck my foot inside (next to your mom.) Found a great $100 pair for $80, plus an extra $8 off for a minor cosmetic scuff I would've caused myself after wearing them for ten minutes. Which I did. Dammit. Having taken a full day of walking to realize the kicks are a half size too short, I can say with sincerity they're fairly forgiving with their return policy. Two minor annoyances: the registers on the men's floor are never running, meaning a one-flight descent in to the Lair of the She, and the socks are damn expensive. Save your non-shoe funds for the Maxx or Target or whatever. Gold Toe are everywhere. In my first college apartment in Medford I nailed shelves around the entire perimeter of my bedroom to hold an unreasonable collection of color-ordered shoes. I was addicted; yellow and purple Reebok pumps (who met their fate on ebay), camo stilettos, vintage '50's kitten heels, obnoxious gold D&G sandals, I loved all especially the outlandish and impractical. My second house had a three tiered shelf lining one wall with footwear organized by type. If a pair was unique I couldn't resist, I bought any I liked within a size up and down so half of them didn't fit so I effectively amassed a lending library. During the four years of uni in Boston not one of those pairs were purchased at DSW. Though the escalator ascends to a tremendous amount of kicks (mostly women's) my dozens of visits have remained fruitless . Perhaps it is the plague of choice and indecision or that the stock is amassed from the castaways of dept stores. I do like the system though, no waiting for people to get your size as the shoes are stacked beneath the displays. There are also many bargains to be had but I find it almost too overwhelming for the headache. My strategy is to survey the land, pick one type and scour that area because otherwise you'll spend hours perusing, making mental notes to come back and then most likely forget the location of the to-be-revisiteds. By far the best DSW I have ever shopped at. You can take that statement for what it's worth coming from a woman who only owns about 100 or so pairs of shoes. Here's the game plan to get the most out of your trip. Head immediately to the third floor clearance section. Scour shelves from the half size below yours through the half size above yours. People put stuff back in the wrong spot pretty often, and I've scored a few pair of size 7 1/2 deeply discounted designer footwear from the size 8 shelves on more than one occasion. Once you've either hit the jackpot in the clearance section or come up empty continue the journey by returning to the second floor and leisurely perusing the entire floor of woman's styles. Or just choose your section -- Seasonal selections up front, dress shoes in the back and casual/athletic off to the side, by the windows. Skip the handbags, leg coverings and accessories all together. You're better off crossing the street to either TJ Maxx or Marshalls if dressing anything other than your feet is your goal. Take the extra cash in your pocket and put it towards additional purchases at any of Downtown Crossings other retail establishments. Or save it towards future purchases. It had been a while since I did some shoe shopping, so after getting a little buzzed after work last week, I decided to head over to DSW in Downtown Crossing. I'm not totally pleased with this DSW location. It's actually kind of bad. It's loud. It's messy. And it's hot. I started sweating the second I walked into the place. Sure, sure, maybe it was the beers I had before heading in there, but that doesn't explain every other time I go in there and drop 10 pounds from sweating. Turn the heat down, peeps. The heat makes feet swollen, swollen feet can't get into shoes. Think! I'm a fast shopper. I know what I want, I grab it and I leave. But I struggled at DSW last week trying to find the perfect pair of work shoes for the fall. The shoes I did like didn't have my size, and the shoes I was iffy about looked stupid on me anyway. It took me close to an hour to find a decent pair of shoes in the right colors. I finally had to reward myself by getting a pair of sparkly black flats for a night out on the town. $20. Steal. DSW is pretty good with prices, but the Downtown Crossing location is just a mess. You have much better luck going online and ordering shoes or just heading over to another DSW (Natick, I believe). The trouble with buying online is that you don't get to try them on and feel them out before you buy them, so it's a waste of time if it doesn't work out. Bummer. Oooooo. verrrrrrr. whelming. Once you get past that, and the extreme indoor temperature (boiling during the winter), you'll find some good buys at DSW. I'm a bit of a clearance hound, and there section for such mark-downs is amazing! I just paid $29 for pair of gray leather lace-up oxford platform pumps, regularly over $100. You'll definitely have to do some scouring, but it's def. not as disorganized as some discount stores. The regular-priced merchandise (I'm talking fashion, not fitness/athletic shoes) while still a good deal, are kind of a bit out of my price range (i.e., the knee-high $599 Ralph Lauren riding boots I drooled over for about 10 minutes). In the future, I'll def. check out DSW before most other stores when I set out to shoe shop, simply based on selection and price. read more

That being said, you have to be in the mode to walk into DSW - just because there are SO MANY options and like any good digging trip, most of them need to be tried on to see if they are actually good. I love shoes. Let me repeat. I. Love. Shoes. I have far too many for my own good and I can't stop. I believe my next line is "Hi, my name is Caitlin, and I have a problem." Anyways. I frequent DSW on a semi regular basis to take care of that random "must buy shoes" urge I get and quite frankly, now when I'm bored on my lunch break. This DSW though...well let's just say I'm gonna save myself some money because I won't be going back there anytime soon. This place is ridiculously overwhelming. There are two levels (definitely took me a little while to figure that out and it was only because I knew something was up when I didn't see the clearance section) and the set up is, to put it bluntly, horrible. The aisles are short and cramped and not really set up in any particular way so that similar shoes are put together. There are mirrors all over the place which is fine if you need to check out how a shoe looks, but I get the distinct feeling that they're there to make the store look bigger. It just makes things confusing, it makes me feel like I'm going to turn around and run into one of them, and it's just unnecessary. The store employees are incredibly unfriendly, and some of them look like they want to club you with that 3 inch stilleto you just picked up. Not that this is really the kind of store that you need someone to help you out in, but it would be nice to know they'd be there if you needed it instead of playing hide and seek with you. If you can get past all of this, then sure, the location makes it easier for people in the city to get some shoe shopping done instead of trekking out to the burbs for it, but that's really the only plus I can find. I know the quality that other DSW stores have to offer and I'd much prefer to go a little more out of my way and get what I really want. Pretty much the best DSW I've been to and and I've been to a few (the ones in Framingham, Nashua, and Sagus). There are TONS of shoes here, so you're bound to find something though not everything there is super cheap. There are definitely high end designer shoes there that are still in the $300+ range and even some of the regular brands ( like Steve Madden) still aren't discounted that much. I'm not sure if it stands for Discount Shoe Warehouse or Designer Shoe Warehouse (it's a bit of both really) but it's my go-to place for work and play shoes. one thing that is missing is a nice selection of flip-flops or a better selection of sandles. The ladies get basically 1 and half floor-space of shoes and the guys get a half a floor (or is it really just a third?) which isn't all that cool but the stuff they do have there for the guys is well priced and diversified. You got your Florshiem, Clarks, Sketchers, Kenneth Cole, etc. on one side and your Nike, Adidas, Converse, etc on the other. All at up to half what you would pay elsewhere. There's a small section of clearance shoes for the guys to. I'm sure they get the vast majority of their dough from the women's shoes -- but how about exanding just a little bit for the guys, eh? It's not a scam or a credit card. For every pair you buy you accrue points and when you reach a certain amount, you get excellent coupons, deals, and notices about upcoming sales and promotions. For example, I got a $10 off coupon for signing up so I held on to it for sometime in the future. Then last week I got a thing in the mail for a new line of New Balance running sneakers DSW was getting at discounted prices. I went in, got a $70 pair of shoes for $50, but with my coupon, all told the price was $40. Excellent deal and excellent experiences all around. If there was a shoe heaven, it would look something like the inside of DSW. They are a growing business, and they're doing pretty well. Their selection is impressive; I've gotten everything from sneakers to strappy sandals to cute flats here. The prices are low enough, given that they sell actual brands. But there is SO much more to DSW than the fact that they sell a ridiculous number of shoes. -Clearance. The number of shoes in their clearance racks is greater than the number of shoes sold at boutiques. You have to go up to the 3rd level for these. The % discount is color coded, so I get extremely excited when I find the 70% off ones. -DSW Rewards membership. It pains my heart every time I hear a customer refusing to sign up for their rewards card. If only they knew the perks...like, $10 to $20 gift certificates every so often once you accumulate a certain number of points. And, you can even combine gift certificates, up to 3 at a time! Imagine saving $60 on your purchase (I promise I'm not their spokesperson)! The expiration dates on these gift certificates are ridiculous too, like many many months after they've been issued, so there's no pressure to use them immediately. They also send birthday discounts. -Free stuff every so often. They tend to do these free-gift-with-purchase promotions at the beginning of each new season. They'll usually give away free bags and purses (and they're actually cute and wearable) for relatively inexpensive purchases. -Their website. They just recently started posting their products online. So now you don't even have to go into the store to see if they have anything you want, you can just go online and check it out first. Convenient! -The people who work there. They are nice, but not too nice. Meaning, they'll let you go find your perfect shoe in peace, but they are also approachable at the same time. I like this store. There are not too many times to go in and leave empty handed. They already have sandals and flip-flops ; almost 1/2 of their store is ready for the summer. As some would say that it's too much too soon I was very happy to find sandals and flip flops because I was headed to the Bahamas the third week in January. It's always better to go into a store and try on the shoes than to buy it blind folded from the internet. They always have a good selection of shoes. Probably my last time shopping here. Service is always really slow. If I wasn't returning shoes then I wouldn't have bothered to come back.

I had a specific mission last night. I needed to find casual shoes. I am a teacher and buy comfortable but ugly shoes every year for school. The problem is that I end up going out in these unattractive shoes in my free time and feel self-conscious. And so, yes, must find casual shoes. It took me a long time as I am very not into heels or anything fancy. I finally settled on some Converses that were $50 that I'm not sure I'm in love with. However, I found some great Borns that were cheaper than the usual and will make perfect comfy (and slightly cute) work shoes. (Also $50) I'm pretty sure the store closes at 9. The store was mostly deserted. Workers were circulating, trying to clean up, but no one told us that the store was closing soon. That kind of gave it a slight creepy aspect as I was afraid that any second they would yell at us over the loudspeaker. But they played music that kept my musician bf sane and occupied so I was actually appreciative of that. I feel like the selection for size 10 shoes was adequate though there could have been more shoes in my size of course. I am almost happy with my Converses (that I picked in a hurry because I hate shoe shopping and the store was closing soon) although I might check out Skechers to see if they have anything better. read more
