I often go on weeknight to take advantage of the 3 for 10 tapas menu which is a great option.

Plau Gin & Beer House - Best kept secret of the restaurant - the well

Alright so WHO KNEW Preston has one of the best kept secrets of the North West. This bar and…read morerestaurant is the renovated and refurbished 350-year-old Plough Inn, which sat beside one of the main medieval routes of the north. Numerous historical figures have walked the halls of PLOU since then, and the building has been used for everything from a gin distillery to battle barracks. The new owners have carefully preserved the building and even showcase artefacts discovered in the cellar, where they also happened to excavate the old well which dives 43 feet deep. There are several levels to the building - each with a different function. The top floors house the restaurant, with wonderful dishes from all over the world (HUGE props to the chef). The bottom cellar is where the well is located (right next to a gorgeous bar). And then the floors in between are a cocktail bar and beer/bar stall area. You can rent out different locations of the restaurant for business meetings, workshops, celebrations and more. Okay now onto the restaurant. What a treat! PLAU offers brunch, lunch, and dinner. We went for a late dinner and were blown away. The beer bread butter, king prawns, and duck & squash were my personal favourites, but honestly every dish was lovely. So happy we chose to dine here and can't wait to return!

From the outside it looks basic but when you see the menu and get your food served it's far from basic! Amazing sized portions and just so authentic. We just made it through the starters before indulging into our mains. Little did I expect that my portion would be enough for 3 people instead of myself. Had to box it up and will gladly polish off tomorrow. Can't recommend this place more as it's off the main street, staff and service were so welcoming, serving was quick (albeit it was quiet) and the prices are so cheap! Total package

With a couple of other people we went for one of the banquets to experience what they have to offer - I was very happy with everything. My companions felt that the starters were a little disappointing, or at least quite generic and at times lacking flavour. I thought they were great though, because I value variety over quality perhaps! We all liked the soups though, which were packed with chicken and other tasty bits. The we had a selection of mains, from prawns to beer and so on. Tender meat, interesting sauces and fresh ingredients: all fine by me.

It was almost like four entirely different pizzas - each quadrant had different ingredients and they were all yummy. My favorite might have been the truffle, mushroom, gran milano... but I also love an anchovy slice! Could have been slightly crispier overall, but good pizza. We also shared a Caesar salad (pretty different than Caesars in the states - not as heavy). And an order of Buffalo wings, which I felt like tasted like a cheesy slightly curry flavored wing actually. Different than expected, and good! Also got a side dip for the pizza of chilli & basil and this was very good! Reminds me of Chinese chili garlic paste but with parm and basil cut in. Never would've thought of this myself but worked so well. I love dipping the salad's breadsticks into the chilli & basil dip. Vegan friendly spot as well! When we walked in, we were asked if we wanted the vegan menus. Nice touch for a pizza spot.

The decor is nice with the open kitchen visible as you enter the restaurant, there is also a nice amount of seating and a couple of comfortable booths, which I was seated in on my visit. I was fairly impressed with my experience, the staff seemed friendly and happy to help, and they were able to make my gluten-free Pollo Pancetta pizza (This pizza was on the winter menu and removed recently, however they are normally still happy to make it as they have the ingredients). My friend ordered a Romana Florentina pizza with chicken instead of olives, again they were able to accommodate simple requests without a fuss, such as swapping the olives for chicken, and they put the egg on one side of the pizza, so my egg-loving and egg-hating guest were able to share it without a kerfuffle! They commented that they enjoyed the pizza, they found the base light and crispy and much appreciated the Romana upgrade (You can get the upgrade which is usually £1.95 free with Pizza Express' rewards as a Gold member). To drink, we all ordered a pink lady apple juice, again this is made with the finest quality apples, giving the juice a natural pink colour, I enjoyed the drink but at £3.30 per glass, I would say it is slightly pricey. Again, you may be able to redeem a free soft drink with the Pizza Express rewards app depending on your tier (I did), so it makes it more affordable. I enjoyed my gluten-free pollo pancetta (£13), I did find the cheese to be clumped together a little, however, and the passata was a little runny, but I did enjoy my meal. A fairly good Pizza Express store, and one I would return to if I'm ever in Preston again. 4*
